i'm the manuscripts historian, and i co-curated our 2014 exhibition on juana riales. it's my great pleasure to introduce carlos salomon. he is a sklcholar working in social movements, oral history and migration. his biography of pio pico, was made with great resourcefulness. this challenges the paradigm of the decline of the californias which that experience has often been interpreted, drawing a connection between the battles fought by californians and mexicans. he challenges the images that many of us have of californians. like many other early mexican settlers, pio pico was of african descent. this continued to surprise our guests. they just were not aware of the early african roots of california. this is an aspect of our history that's worthy of much greater interest in exploration, and i'm so honored and pleased that dr. salomon will explore it with us tonight. do stay after the program to chat, buy a copy of his wonderful book. his wife owns one of the best restaurants in oakland, so i encourage you to visit that as well. so, i hope you enjoy. please give our spe
