and of course tougher skepticism from lamar alexander and judd gregg. betsy, how do you read this? is this going to be as easy or at least as promising as john harwood is suggesting? >> well, of course, the president has to calm the fears of two groups of americans. one is seniors. he's already admitted to them that this legislation will be paid for by a $500 billion cut in future medicare spending over the next decade, about a 10% cut when 30% more people will be in the program. those numbers just don't add up. and seniors are worried about fewer hip replacements, et cetera. and he also has to calm the fears of americans who already have health plans they like. because the legislation says they will have to move into what's called a qualified plan. and the health choices commissioner yet to be appointed will decide what that covers, how much it will cost, how much people will have to pay, and how much leeway their doctors will have under these plans to give them the care they need. >> the american public is just worried that expanding $50 million uninsured, expandi inin requiremen

judd gregg joins us now. the top ranking republican on the senate banking committee. appreciate your time, sir. let's talk about your republican colleagues now coming out and saying that the president should cancel talks with iran. i have a quote from one i want to read from our viewers. a ranking republican on the intelligence committee has this to say. quote. the obama administration should immediately cancel its offer to hold talks with the brutal iranian regime and pursue a series of tough sanctions to slow iran's mad rush to master the nuclear weapons cycle. once again reality has refused to yield in the face of more talk from this administration. do you agree with the congressman, sir? >> no. i think we do need to engage iranians in these discussions initially, though we have to go into it with open eyes and we can't be knee if about this and we're dealing with a government over there which really rejects western values and sees the west basically as the enemy and, as a result, we can't presume that they are going to do anything other than give us lip service, b

john mccain, judd gregg, chuck grassley, that sort of thing, to make the average person out there at home saying wow t looks like he's being pretty reasonable. on the other hand he had some real partisan rhetoric sort of buried within the speech that he wasn't going to waste time with people trying to kill his bill. and i think that was effective in rallying his base which is the most important thing he's got to do right now to get this thing through. >> rose: when you lack at what he's doing, allen, where is the risk? >> well, i think the risk is particularly this weekend, all of these unscripted performances, you know. the interview situation is something that he handles pretty well. but you can remember that when he went on the jay leno show back in march he made that little crack about the special olympics that got him into a lot of trouble. so although i think the sunday morning washington shows are going to be fairly predictable in the q & a i think this letterman thing on the other hand could be kind of interesting just to see how he maneuvers through what is a much more risky

you think about people like judd gregg or john mccain. a lot of those people also happen to be economic conservatives, budge hawks and others. i think the it's going to be very, very difficult to find more than one or two or three, perhaps, republicans in the senate willing to do this. it makes it politically necessary for it to be a democratic-only enterprise in a way i don't think was quite there at the start in '93 and '94. also, i think, frnkly increases the political opportunities and risks for the democratic party. another big change for me, and this has to do a little bit with the change in the media, is the strength and the passion of, we talked about the efforts the president went through to try to tamp down honoringed opposition, but this organic opposition that developed and we saw it play out in august, and some of it i'm sure was furthered by astroturf and people getting out there. it was made possible only by the internet and the media we have now of people saying i care about this, i want to know what it means for my family
