its sales in the month of july increased 1.6 percent over july of 2008. 2.2 percent higher than june. and the news sent ford stock up 4 percent today. >> it is a little different at chrysler. july sales fell 9.4 percent compared to last year. and that's much better than the 42 percent year-to-year drop reported back in june. >> still, problems continue at general motors. gm sales dropped 19 percent compared to july of 2008. and more layoffs may be on the offing. 6000 workers took buy out offers but that's not enough. gm wants to end the year with about 40,000 workers and right now it has 54 on thousand on the payroll. >> meantime, stock market. the stock market had a great day today. dow jumped almost 115 points. closing above 9296. wall street inenjoyed the best july in two decades. went up eight 1/2 percent last month. best july since 1989. and best monthly gain since 2002. postal service considers closing 1000 branches nationwide after $7 billion in losses are projected this year alone. officials may consider factors like customer access, service, and savings before designed which
