a few years ago, the parade was moved to the fourth of july. for all intents and purposes, this is san jose's fourth of july parade. it just happens to be sponsored and organized by the alameda business association. >> around here, we don't have a material fourth of july parade. that's why we took it on ourselves to build up this parade so that it could be eventually a citywide event. i think this year, our fifth year, that's true. >> reporter: the business association sends out a parade program well in advance to about 30,000 households. local businesses buy advertising space in the program. the revenue is then used for everything from the extra police to waste services to the portable bathrooms. some money does come from the city of san jose, but only in the form of small hp grants from willing individual council members. >> i supported it last year and i supported it this year with a small grant out of my office. >> reporter: the celebration comes full circle. the business association gives people the parade and those same people turn out in
