it's an unusual defense as northern virginia bureau chief julie carey reports now.or are hearing first from the victims who were saying the suspect was very much in control. >> reporter: sue duan was shot and stabbed by andrew schmuhl. his attorneys don't dispute that, but they say he was impaired at the time, that it was his wife calling the shots. victim duncan told jurors today that her attacker knew exactly what he was doing. andrew schmuhl was wearing a trench coat and a fedora hat when he knocked on the door and if your hon hours of terror for the duncan family. he tased fisher twice. he said i'm arresting your husband. he flashed a badge in front of my face. the couple was bound with zip ties, ordered to the bathroom. fisher recognized andrew schmuhl as the husband of alicia schmuhl. schmuhl began to interrogate her husband, at times speaking to someone else he called his partner on a cell phone. she was ordered into the bathroom, but eventually fearful for her husband, emerged. he was lying on top of leo and he was cutting his throat, testified duncan. i sai

julie carey joins us live. >> reporter: the heart wrenching testimony today as we heard from anotherne of the victim's roommates about the day she found her friend dead and confronted the accused killer, steven brio. >> reporter: katherine irwin introduced herself to jurors as grace man's best friend. she testified she began to get puzzling text messages from housemate, steven brio as she and another roommate walked home the afternoon of april 17th. brio testified, i made a mess in holly's room. he emerged from a bedroom. he had sweated through his shirt and seemed confused. brio asked, what would due if she wasn't here anymore, referring to grace? irwin agitated, demanded, what's going on. brio answered, grace came home. she was a -- to me. i slapped her. she bit me. so i strangled her. irwin ordered brio to go upstairs to her room. then, she skin already blue as prosecutors played the 911 call from irwin. m mann's parents broke out. irwin can be heard touting out her cpr compressions rising higher and higher with no response from the victim. prosecutors provided new detail about ot

northern virginia bureau chief julie carey reports the >> reporter: kim pham la roke and husband eric la roke in happier times. both virginia tech grads and successful in their careers. he was an engineer at dewberry consultant and she worked at fannie mae. they started a family and had two young children. last summer eric la roke was found shot to death and monday night after she left work, kim laroke was arrested accused for shooting her husband to death. >> somehow it led to a 35-year-old woman killing her 33-year-old husband. >> eric laroke was found dead in his bed on july 31, 2015. police discovered a handgun still there, a bullet, pillow and sheet stained red. his wife mourned the sudden death. 12 days after the passing she updated her facebook profile picture with this button bearing her husband's initials reading forever in our police analyzed the evidence seized in the home, cell phone call, monday they presented their case to the fairfax county grand jury. they won an indictment. kim pham laroke was charged with second-degree murder and use of of a firearm in commission of

northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us with the new details on the frightening scene.eporter: well, doreen, as police rushed to this woodbridge neighborhood last night some had to be struck by the similarities with the tragic incident in february. that's when three police officers were shot responding to a domestic violence incident and one of them was killed. last night's call to the very same subdivision, but this time police and neighbors were able to work together to save lives. quiet had returned to this town home community today, but l beneath this deck responding to the screams of a 50-year-old woman who had been beaten over the head with a shotgun. several neighbors called 911. here's some of the information between the dispatch center and officers headed to the scene. >> stand by. i'm trying to get clarification. one person saying she was shot. another saying she was not. a neighbor can hear a female screaming she's been shot outside. >> this neighbor made some of the 911 calls. >> she heard voices saying help, help, help and she heard some bang, boom, boom. >

julie carey joins us from manassas with reaction. >> reporter: well, that teacher was arrested about ten days ago at the end of the spring term. today as students are coming back, some are just catching up with the they are shocked a teacher is charged with such a serious crime. 27-year-old math teacher youssef taleb ended the spring semester in police custody, relieved of his duties. these search warrant documents spell out the allegations against him. a female student came forward on may 5th. her allegation, that two days earlier mr. taleb took her into an enclosed conference room to help her with several calculus problems. it was there he allegedly sexually assaulted her. she says it wasn't the first time. back on march 22nd, he allegedly raped her inside a classroom. a second woman also came forward to say she'd been sexually battered by the same teacher earlier in the semester. the two women attended different classes and did not know each other. >> is that him? >> yeah, >> reporter: this student hadn't heard about the arrest we told her today. jew receive taleb was her math tea

julie carey is live to talk about what that video is showing us. >> reporter: that video played for jurorsoday was taken from a store security camera. it shows the suspect's wife alicia schmuhl buying a taser at a herndon gun store. november 7th, 2014, just two days before a near deadly attack, andrew schmuhl's wife alicia is captured on video at a gun store buying a taser. the clerk told jurors she later returned to buy more taser cartridges. it was this taser later recovered in the schmuhl's getaway was used to launch the attack against leo fisher and his wife sue duncan. schmuhl is accused of stabbing both victims and shutting duncan in the head. prosecutors believe the schmuhls plotted the attack to seek revenge after leo fisher fired alicia schmuhl. attorneys for andrew schmuhl say he was just carrying out his wife's orders. the defense attorney underscored that it was alicia buying the weapon. asked the defense attorney, did you see my client? he wasn't there that day. no, replied the clerk. did you see her talk on the phone to her boss or partner? negative, said the clerk. the foren

julie carey was in the courtroom to witness the dramatic moments. >> reporter: because of his age, za testify via closed circuit tv. he sat in a separate courtroom. his father is accused of killing his estranged wife michelle. the mother of five children was found dead the morning of march 20th, 2014. her body hanging in a basement shower. she and her husband had been in the midst of a bitter divorce and he was barred from her home. on the witness stand, little zach told the prosecutor he saw his father during the night before he woke up the next morning to find his mom missing. he says he was initially sleeping in his mom's bed until she told him to move. he then went to sleep with his older brother, but left his special blanket behind. zach testified he saw his dad bring the blanket into his brother's room during the night. but then during cross-examination, a potentially pivotal moment when zach contradicted his earlier testimony. when i join you at 5:00, what he after torrential rains hit eastern texas. nearly a foot and a half of rain fell in the southeastern part of the state. i

julie carey has details on why their testimony could be critical to the prosecution. >> reporter: becausehis age, 8-year-old zach castillo testified via closed circuit tv. 11-year-old jonathan walked to the witness stand in suit jacket and tie. it was march 20th, 2014, when the boys and two other siblings walk up one morning to find their mom missing, her body later found in the basement. her estranged husband is charged with her mother. the couple had been in the midst barred from her home. on the witness stand, key testimony for prosecutors from little zach. he says he saw his dad in their house the night before his mom was found dead. zach testified during the night he went to get into bed with jonathan, but left his special blanket behind. asked the prosecutor, did you see your gigi again that night? yes, said zach, my dad brought it in. zach contradicted his initial testimony. castillo broke into tears, wiping his eyes. but prosecutor got the final questions and zach reaffirmed his initial statement. asked whitman, zach, that night when you were sleeping in jonathan's bed, did you se

the victim was found dead in his home in centerville, virginia, a few weeks ago, but bureau chief julie carey reports that's not where he was attacked. county courthouse. >> reporter: the victim steven lee was viciously beaten and stabbed at a weekend party. but instead of calling 911, his friends drove him back to his centerville townhouse, put him in bed, and that's where his family found him dead later that day. friends at george mason university where he took classes know him as steven lee. one writes he was someone that had the kindest heart and was a blessing to those around him. he was also someone who was always willing to help anyone in need. some of his friends didn't help him at his time of greatest need. investigators report lee went to a large party the night of april 23rd that lasted into the early morning hours of april 24th. there he was physically assaulted by a mob of 10 to 15 individuals. a witness tells people stomping, kicking, and punching lee while he lay motionless on the kitchen floor. he was then stabbed. but instead of calling 911 for help, his friends reportedly pu
