kpix 5 reporter juliette goodrich live in the sierra with that story for us tonight. >> there's a lot of snow up here. that's why there's reason for concern. if you saw my live shot an hour ago, i was standing in the sun. ski resort was about to close, all the people going home. then wham, the snow just started coming down. that's the concern. it just happened so quick, so fast, and there are concerns up on that mountain. >> reporter: there is so much snow in the sierra, it's already surpassed last year. so much that this deer had to dig through snow just to find his skis after last night's storm. while getting to the resort may be challenging with the road work being done to repair a stretch of highway 50 that buckled, the pay-off was worth it to the bachmanns who drove up from rain soaked petaluma. >> we caught some blue sky today. going to be a wonderful day of skiing. >> reporter: skiers are coming from all over to experience it like gene from brooklyn. >> crazy how much snow they have here. unbelievable. i've been coming here for 20 years. i've never seen anything like this. >> w

kpix 5's juliette goodrich on the quick thinking that saved >>> a dramatic rescue in livermore.wo bay area men save a man from drowning as his car slides off the road into a swollen creek. kpix 5's juliette goodrich on the quick thinking that saved that man's life. >> reporter: this happened out in the middle of nowhere. these two gentlemen were able to rescue this young man in the middle of this creek here. they deserve a lot of credit even though they never asked for it. >> the shovel with the axe. >> pick axe, yeah. >> reporter: they first heard a loud crash and then ran to the road to see what it happened. >> as soon as i got here the car was upside-down, you know, down in the creek and, um, it looked pretty serious. >> reporter: dan rich and clayton weiderman don't consider themselves heroes. >> yeah. well, you know. >> it was all timing. if -- just fortunately we were here. >> reporter: but their quick thinking and heroic actions saved the man's life. the 20-year-old had swerved off the road in the rain yesterday. he was trapped in his car upside-down in the swollen creek.

kpix 5's juliette goodrich on why that could create a very serious problem. >> reporter: allen, we're talking about overloading the sewer system and if you live in oakley or on bethel island you have either seen it, smelled it and officials are trying to stop it. >> it is illegal. >> reporter: illegal to drain floodwater into sewer systems. but that's what many oakley and bethel island residents are doing because their yards have so much standing water. >> they removed the cleanout cap and essentially started draining all of the storm runoff. >> reporter: alerts come into the sanitary district when the water levels surge. >> so these are the obvious signs that we see in rain event. >> reporter: it creates a hydraulic overload, flooding an already full sewer system. the result? sewage overflow. do you see it? do you smell it? >> you can see it. it runs down the street. and it -- it will come out of manholes. and it will sheet across the road and will run down the street and cars drive through it and people walk through it. it's a public health problem. >> reporter: the excess overloads
