here cops a cell and behind it is julio. julio is an environment favoring development. it has certainly strengthened here. but as the cell approaches the hawaiian islands it is encountering some wind shear, the waters are marginally warm so what we're looking at is a weakening system of the that's very important here. this system is weakening as it approaches the hawaiian islands but nonetheless the weather will be intense on the big island as we're closest to the center of circulation, center of circulation just off to the southeast and wind field, tropical storm-force winds in orange. very small area. hurricane hunters are having a hard time finding hurricane-force winds. nonetheless as this interacts with mountains we will see hurricane-force winds and areas of trees being knocked down, power being knocked out and intense rainfall so it's certainly going to be quite windy in the big island but the winds 40 to 75 miles an hour. flash flooding, power outages is what we expect and, of course, the pounding surf. as the system interacts with these huge volcanic slopes her

julio might not bring any damage at all. we have the latest >> reporter: authorities say they prepared for the worst with tropical storm is iselle and they feel like they dodged a bullet. now attention goes to hurricane julio, a category 2 storm and it's expected to weaken and actually miss the islands to the northeast. they're not expecting a direct hit but as a precaution, authorities have closed a tourist area at pearl harbor for the weekend. this comes on the heels of iselle which just pounded the area, snapping thousands of trees and more than 9,000 people are still without power. many may not get power back until sometime next week. hawaii is receiving emergency help from california and florida and some residents we spoke to say it was the worst storm they've ever experienced >> it felt like an earthquake with the winds hitting us over 50 mph or 60 mph, and it was just spooky. when the power went out, we went to flashlights and candles, but other than that, it's okay >> today is primary day. two precincts postponed vot

dylan is tracking julio. what's the latest? >> julio is a category 2 hurricane.t out where remnants of iselle are. it is no longer a tropical storm. once it moved over the mountainous terrain. we are seeing rain with that system. but here is hurricane julio. again as a category 2 it has winds up to 100 miles per hour. it's moving to the west-northwest and looks like it will stay to the north of the big island. but that being said, here we go with a lot of heavy rain continuing to stream in from the south. the oranges, the yellows indicate where we have our heaviest youp pours. considering that we've had 11 of 14 inches of rain, any additional rain will continue to make for some flooding concerns. now here we go, sunday at 8:00 a.m. it is well to the northeast of hilo but winds will be at 85 miles per hour. so it will cross to the north as a category 1 hurricane, then downgrade to a tropical storm. you can see this path. it is a great path to keep this storm away from the islands, although rough surf and some outer bands of rain will still be an issue. lester? >>
