cnn's kaitlin collins is back with us now. kaitlin, there is an interesting and notable letter at the end of this document. what is in this letter? >> yeah. for people who are reading at home, it's in exhibit 1. it's a letter from trump's attorney, evan corcoran, who is still representing him right u to jay bratt. jay bratt is the lead justice department official on this case. he was there, presenting the day of this search. he was the one who actually contacted trump's attorney and asked them -- announced that they were there, asked them to turn the cameras off and asked which attorneys were there on the ground to greet them. so on may 25th, jay bratt gets a letter from evan corcoran. that is about a week before jay bratt and three other investigators actually went down to mar-a-lago. that is when they surveyed this storage room where a lot of these documents were being kept apparently in a haphazard manner according to what we can see in this affidavit. in this letter from evan corcoran to the top justice department official

cnn kaitlin has more on this.riday deadline. >> right, kate, this is a doover for trump's legal team. they asked for a special master earlier this week and the judge is signaling what they wrote in court is inadequate so far. the judge is asking trump's attorneys to clarify a few things. she wants them to write more about the precise relief sought so that is essentially a judge saying i don't know what you're asking for, please clarify. she also wants them to say why the court has jurisdiction, what legal standards aplay. pl please aexplain more about the law and why trump is seeking immediate relief. trump didn't do the things you need to do to get a judge to do something on an emergency basis. she's asking for a little more explanation there. also, this question has trump actually told the justice department he's asking for a special master, let them know this is in court now. so all of that explanation is supposed to be coming in friday as a supplement. we should see it before friday on thursday so tomorrow, we

kaitlin collins joins us with that. what's the reaction so far from the former president's legal team? >> reporter: his orbit was pretty caught off guard by this announcement. it was remarkable as evan laid out. they were determining how to proceed and what they were going to do. that involved them contacting outside attorneys. the former president has been represented by a slew of attorneys. he was focused on one that was present when this search happened on monday and another one who has been defending the president and consulting with him on how to proceed going forward here. what i am told is they have not made a decision on how they're going to proceed. of course they have got that deadline by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. it does appear they are leaning toward the idea of challenging this and objecting to the idea of unceiling this search warrant as the justice department laid out today. just to be clear, they have not made a decision yet. so that remains to be seen where they are going to go from here. certainly this is so

much to get to so let's begin with cnn kaitlin live in washington. kaitlin, what more are you learning about this new request from top senators? >> reporter: well, kate over the weekend and today we've seen a lot of bipartisan calls for transparency around this search even after we got that search warrant on friday. so over the weekend, we had two house committee chairs so both democrats asking for a classified briefing from the intelligence community as well as a damage assessment being done by the director of national intelligence and then this morning, our colleague danella diaz on the hill received word senators mark warner who is a democrat and the chair of the senate intelligence committee and then marco rubio who is the top republican on the same come pity, they sent a private letter to the director of intelligence as well as attorney general merrick garland asking for more information about what happened here, what was taken out of mar-a-lago. we haven't seen the letter but he said in his remarks, attorney general garland said there was an in

cnn kaitlin is live in washington with more detail on this. what more are you learning? >> reporter: kate, this information reveals another step the justice department took as it was investigating classified records in donald trump's possession leading up to that search at mar-a-lago last week. cnn confirmed the fbi spoke to both pat sipcipollone. when thadministration ended the were among the central people to handle trump's interactions and work on his administrations handover of federal records once the archives realized trump had papers that weren't his to keep. in the spring, we know this criminal investigation became very active. it was leading to fbi interviews of scipollone and others and subpoenaing to get back the records and subpoenaed surveillance video of mar-a-lago itself. "the new york times" that broke the story reported that something on the surveillance footage around a storage room at mar-a-lago caught investigators' attention and alarmed them. all of this becomes part of the investigative work that led to the unprecedented search last weekend and all

senior crime and justice reporter kaitlin polands joins us now. there were more documents he was holding there and you can reasonably say there was warning because they removed some a number of months ago. >> for sure. what this national archives letter released yesterday is giving us a back story, a back story how this escalated to the point where the justice department felt it needed to go in there and what this letter is, it's may 10th. so that's before a visit to ha r -- mar-a-lago. the national archives was writing to donald trump's lawyer in the spring and recounting that we were looking through the 15 boxes that you gave back to us that we've been trying to get for a year and we looked and saw there were classified documents in that and in fact, this letter reveals the archives found 100 classified documents more than 700 pages in total marked as classified including things labeled as sci, sap, really the highest levels of classification, the types of things that have very specific regulations on who can access, when they can access, where

cnn's kaitlin polantz joins us from washington with more. this judge moved really quickly once the doj had submitted what they thought to be kept out of this document, and now it got this noon deadline, not far from it, what are you expecting in this document? what should people be looking for when it comes out? >> a lot of things here. this is a really pivotal day for what we may know about donald trump post presidency and especially about that unprecedented search of mar-a-lago almost three weeks ago. what is coming today is it is going to be a filing that is submitted in court and that filing is what the justice department proposed yesterday to the judge, and the judge accepted, essentially it is a version of their affidavit, they had written a lot narrative about their investigation as well as detailing why they had probable cause to go into mar-a-lago and seize those 33 items including classified documents out of there a couple of weeks ago. they had written that to the judge and this is a blacked out version, a redacted version. we don
