thank you for that report, kaitlyn. here at the table to share with me their insights, michael scherer with the "new york times," savio capore. michael, you wrote the time's piece this morning about all of this. what is your sense from talking to sources there about the president and giuliani and why now? >> i think we're still trying to figure that out. i must say there is some level of satisfaction as a reporter who scrambled late at night to get this story to sort of think about the fact the white house staff was also scrambling in the same way. >> misery loves company? >> right. clearly the president's staff has been in upheaval for several days, several weeks, people coming in, going out, and the flood coming in, the tide going out. in some ways there shouldn't be a surprise that as the people are leaving, the strategy is changing as well. what's hard to understand is why they think or what legal advantage they think they are providing by essentially admitting that they've been misleading the public for a long time

we'll go ladies first here, kaitlyn. no doubt the changes in the white house's version of the stormy daniels payment story, that's created a lot of confusion, it's hard for the public to keep up. does that in a way help trump. >> it could be part of a larger strategy to the extent that there was one. remember, that earlier this week. the president really shuffled his legal team as it pertains to the mueller investigation. and there was a sense that the president and giuliani got together and wanted to take a more aggressive stance against mueller. and giuliani's multiple interviews are reflective of that. the problem is they both have completely muddied the waters here. and you know, politically, that may be something that they were aiming for. but it also exposes additional legal liabilities perhaps. and additional political fallout. and the question today as it has been for the past several days, is what is the white house's credibility any more? and that really matters. not only in terms of this story, but in terms of

kaitlyn collins is live outside the white house. kaitlyn, this isn't the first time the public has questioned the president's actions, essentially undermining the white house's boss. have we seen any reaction from the white house? >> they haven't responded to that particularly today, but they know kellyanne's husband is tweeting things out there about this, and because president trump repaid michael cohen that $130,000 payment that he made to stormy daniels that it does not constitute as a campaign finance violation. clearly george conway disagrees with that. that is obviously notable because his wife is one of the highest ranking women in this administration, one of the highest ranking people in this administration, and he seems to be arguing against what the president and giuliani are both saying, that it could have very well been a campaign finance violation. it just goes to show what strange times we are living in here, jim. >> no question, she is very senior and she's also been unyielding in defending the president left and rig

what's getting more attention, more reaction right now, kaitlyn, the questions themselves or the leak that was made public? >> that depends on if you're inside or outside this white house. if you're outside, it really reveals the scope of the russia investigation. but if you're inside the white house, and specifically the president, he's calling the leak of these questions disgraceful and raising the question of how they even got throughout in the first place. we should know that when the "new york times" published these dozens of questions, they were read to the president's legal team who then compiled them to a list. it's surely nice to know the outside people that came them the list of questions. it wasn't the special counsel who gave them the questions. we do know that rudy giuliani who is the late els. there were no questions about collusion in those lists that were that is false, of course, a lot of the questions teal with obstruction of justice. but the bottom line here, wolf, is we know what the special counsel now wants to ask the president, but the question now is whether or

interesting about that, i want to pull up some of those numbers and ask this of you, betsy, because to kaitlyn's point, 13% of republicans view the investigation as legitimate. 75% of republicans agree with the president. they're calling it a witch hunt. should mueller and the team offer something to the public at this point to validate continuing this investigation, stop giving trump loyalists room to attack, or can they stay successfully above this fray? >> something you'll hear from people with federal law enforcement experience is that investigations are supposed to speak for themselves. the work product of an investigation is public face in the same way that when attorneys are litigating at the supreme court, the briefs that they file speak for themselves. so it's unlikely that mueller would try to make any sort of public relations effort to defend his investigation. the responsibility for defending the mueller probe is going to fall on individuals, politicians, activists who believe it needs to be defended. that said, we should be keeping an eye out for additional activity from mueller. th
