kala rama is live in east new york with the tragic story. kala? >> reporter: ken, 35-year-old rafael varas was behind the wheel of the cab. he was stabbed in the driver's seat multiple times in the torso. it was his first day behind the wheel of that cab we are told. police say his wallet with money inside and a cell phone they are not sure of a motive. police haven't made reason arrest. new lots said he was last dispatched for a pick up at a diner on linden and 78th and made a drop off, they believe, at an apartment complex on pennsylvania, then came and parked here. new lots says the drivers know not to park in this area, especially on a dark street with little traffic, that time tf night. other drivers told me that it is unsafe. this isn't a safe area for them. only the aftermath. they didn't see any suspects running from the scene. they were questioned by police but have little to tell them. drivers we talked to who came to the area to check out the scene don't want to go on camera because they are scared. they have fear. they believe the pers

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live now in hicksville. kala? >> reporter: lori, we have updated numbers for you. we know that nine trains have been canceled eastbound. 13 trains have been canceled westbound. this is really the story this morning. if you are getting on a train like this one heading to manhattan, heading westbound here, you are going to realize that you will sit on the tracks, especially at the hicksville station for some time. this train sitting on the tracks has been there more than 15 minutes. there is about 200 feet of track that needs to be repairs. there is a technical piece called the switch that needs to be rebuild. that is the issue. now they are down to one track for the morning commute between 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. take a look at this work from overnight. two derailed cars here carrying instruction material were removed from the tracks around 2:00 this morning. the derailed freight cars were blocking one of the two tracks shared by passenger trains from ronkonkoma and port jefferson. the repairs to the track will last thr

we are live in white plains, kala rama, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> kala, thank you. this week and the threat from what used to be a rather charge church on delafield on staten island. take a look at this cell phone video taken from a neighbor early this morning. you can see a lot of smoke and flames. the fire broke out after 2:00 this morning. firefighters say when they arrived they were up against a significant amount of fire. in fact, the roof was already in the process of collapsing when they arrived. another concern early on were flying embers. that was a concern that those flying embers might hit the rooftops tf adjacent homes and igniting more fires. however, because of that heavy rain, that prevented that from happening. the fire at the moment is considered suspicious because of the high volume of fire firefighters were up against when they arrived. we spoke to a neighbor who said when he stepped out of his home he could not believe how large the fire was and just how tall the flames reached. >> they were big. the windows and everything. that's all i know abou

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live at jersey shore medical center in neptune. kala? >> reporter: good morning. three people were taken to the hospital. i can tell you this morning that the mom is now in stable condition. her two children in serious condition this morning. let me show you the scene in lakewood. in the middle of route 9 you can see the stroller that the woman was pushing with two children inside laying on its side. route 9 was closed for four hours last night. it is now back open. police tell us the mom was pushing her two children in that stroller and the three were walking across route 9 when a black town car crashed into them seriously injuring her children. the driver of the lincoln town car was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out but was not seriously hurt. police tell me that he was interviewed but so far no charges have been filed. it's unclear if the three were in the crosswalk at the time. live in neptune on the jersey shore, kala rama, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. >>> breaking news out of texas. 6 people arrested after th

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live on the scene. kala? >> reporter: michelle, exit 32 is right here. post avenue. he made it down here before being pulled over. state troopers tell us that several other drivers on the roads saw this bus driving erratically and called 911 before he got too far down the northern state park bay. take a look. this is who we are talking about here. this is the bus driver, alexander copeland. troopers say the 52-year-old wreaked of alcohol. then copeland failed a number of sobriety tests after he was pulled over. blood alcohol .2% more than twice the legal limit. he was arrested for driving while intoxicated among other things. this is a picture of the mta bus pulled over. it was copeland's day off and he wasn't supposed to be driving the bus. copeland will likely appear before a judge on charges of reckless endangerment and aggravated dwi. here is the thing. state troopers say it's a good thing they were called about the reckless driving because he could have got stuck under one of the overpasses. kala rama, c

kala rama is live on staten island this morning for us with the latest on the investigation. kala? >> reporter: lori, both of those women were brought here to the staten island university hospital where 21-year-old died from her injuries her friend she was riding her bike with, a 22-year-old woman is in the hospital in critical condition. take a look at the scene here. this mangled bike showsed impact of the accident. the two were riding their bikes down hylan boulevard around 2:00 in the evening when a toyota truck pulling a boat and trailer tried to pass them. police say when the truck switched lanes to go by them, somehow the boat and trailer detached from and slammed into both the girls crushing them then pinning them to the ground. a neighbor that saw the horrific aftermath called 911. >> one was face down and the other one, i believe her arm was under the tire of the boat. i didn't go across though because i get nervous. so, i didn't -- >> we didn't want to -- you didn't want to see anything. >> >> reporter: police say the driver did stay on scene cooperating with the investi

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live at grand army plaza. >> good morning. in the past when we've had gatherings like this we've seen it turn violent. as you mentioned in the middle of a crowd here one person was stabbed to death, another shot and injured here, and in the last 30 minutes we've seen the crowd disburse quite a bit. this is very different than earlier. thousands were out here for the march here of steel pan bands you can hear playing, horns blaring. in less than five hours from now, 1 million people will be celebrating along this 4-mile stretch on eastern parkway. there will also be 4,000nypd officers lining the parade route. the west indian american parade has been known for violence. last year a 55-year-old man was shot to at the time near the parade route and two others were shot and wounded. in 2013, the year before two people were stabbed to death and there was a shooting along the parade route as well. most people have come out here and say that they feel safe despite the violence. >> the cops are like all around. they're very -- not like

. >> kala rama continues our coverage live from midtown. good morning, kala. >> good morning, ken. i'm at 5th and 56th street. you can see here now 5th avenue is open, down to about 2 or 3 lanes here. we can show you what people see along 5th avenue. it's visible. this is an 8-foot tall steel fence. this is so secure that the mesh is small enough that people can't climb this and it's secured in a way with steel and concrete so it can't be toppled over. this is 29,000 feet long and stretches down 5th avenue all for the pope's visit. it was especially made for this papal visit. it will be taken down around 9:00, 10:00 tonight and moved to an undisclosed location. it could go to philadelphia, one of the pope's next stops after he leaves new york city. we should mention that 5th avenue is open until 10:00 this morning all for the morning commute. once it shuts down, it will stay that way and remain that way until 9:00, 10:00 at night after the pope finishes his prayer services at saint patrick's cathedral. once that is done, all of the barriers that you see here will be removed as well

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live in brooklyn. kala? >> reporter: good morning, disspurring stuff as hundreds of kids gathered by atlantic mall in barclays. they grabbed their cell phone when this kid was being pummeled then uploaded the video online and it quickly turned into a viral video. you can see dozens of teens pummel, stomp and assault another teen with what looks like at some points to be a cane. that 16-year-old student from south shore was stabbed in the stomach by another teen from jon jay high school. police say the teen has nonlife- threatening injuries and is in the hospital. three teens were taken into custody and assaulted and arrested for assault. what is just as disturbing is the people standing around watching and recording this without doing a thing. local activists are calling for action urging the victims of these after school beat downs to press formal charges. once the cops were called in, one of the officers was sprayed in the face with mayes. he is doing okay. more charges are expected. kala rama, channel 7 e

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live at the bus depot with the details. kala? >> reporter: the mta says the bus was taken right off the street because the mta says they don't have enough room in this secure jamaica depot to keep all of the buses so some end up parked on the streets. as for the bus driver, 52-year- old alexander copeland, he has been suspended without pay and more disciplinary action is coming. he has been driving mta buses for 17 years. he will appear before a judge later this month for reckless endangerment and aggravated dwi. here is the bus with no passengers on board. it was pulled over at post avenue after other drivers called 911 about the bus swerving in the eastbound lanes off northern state parkway. troopers say copeland wreaked of alcohol and failed a number of sobriety tests. he had a blood alcohol level of .2%, double the legal limit. turns out sunday was copeland's day off and he wasn't even supposed to be driving an mta bus. we asked the mta if it's safe to have the buses parked on the street like this. the mta tells us that they

kala rama spoke with the victim's family. she's joining us live now in the belmont section. >> reporter: right, that family is beyond upset. as you can imagine they're being kept about a block away from the scene here. that cab is just behind me behind that crime scene unit here. it had crashed into a few other cars there after the cab driver was shot. we've learned that cab driver had been driving for more than 12 years and has always talked about the dangers on the job. now his family says his worst fear at work has happened. in the last hour his family gave me this picture of 35-year- old mamab u duri. his family tells me he made a phone call moments before his death saying the guy i just picked up has a gun. his family is now calling for action hoping the mayor makes some changes including bringing backstop and frisk. >> the law don't allow cops now to stop us and check the customers we have behind us. and obviously if the mayor can understand us, he need to change that law back. we have nothing to protect our person not

kala rama is live with the latest information. >> reporter: good morning. parents will now be able to drop their kids off at the quality of life academy. it is closed while they're being investigated for losing a child at the playground yesterday. 2-year-old ethan huachi was reunited his family when they picked him up. the day care workers at quality of life academy brought him down to sunset park playground but left him there. a woman found the toddler sleeping on a park bench and brought him down to the precinct. the 72nd precinct turned to social media to help identify him hoping someone would recognize this picture they tweeted out. diane huachi says they didn't know her son was missing until hours later. >> what gets me so angry is the fact they didn't call me until 4:30 and my son's been missing since 12. anything could have happened. i mean anybody, a psycho or, you know, could have took him somewhere. >> the day care can only have a maximum of 15 kids. they have three aides working at the time. one of those aides was questioned. no word yet if those

good morning, kala. >> this is a wild story here. that bus driver made it all the way down here to park avenue here, post avenue, exit 32. he was heading eastbound when he was pulled over. state troopers tell us a number of other drivers called 911 saying that new york city transit bus was driving erratically down the eastbound parkway. take a look at this. this is the bus driver, alexander copeland. troopers say the 52-year-old wreaked of alcohol. tests. his blood alcohol was .2%, more than twice the legal limit. while intoxicated. this is a picture of the mta afternoon. it turns out that copeland's day off and he wasn't supposed to tampa bay driving a bus. copeland will likely appear before a judge on charges of aggravated dwi. here is the thing. troopers say it's a good thing all the calls came in for his erratic driving. if he continued going down the eastbound lanes he could have got stuck on one of these overpasses that other -- like other buses do. we have seen that in the past. kala rama, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank y

good morning, kala. >> good morning, ken. that's right. the governor is expected here at the jacob javits center about a big announcement for hourly workers with joe biden expected to be here later this afternoon here. governor cuomo is expected to propose a $5 minimum wage for all hourly workers across the board. the $15 minimum would have to be approved by state legislature lead by republicans who are expected to resist and have in the past. some businesses have already responded saying a higher wage would lead to layoffs. you may remember governor cuomo approved the fast food worker increase earlier this year through a wage board. the current state minimum is 8.75 an hour. that is going up to $9 at the end of the year. we heard the governor say it is not possible to live on that amount of money in the state of new york and in his words he is calling out corporate agreed at its worst. >> it's polarizing society. it's corporate agreed at its worse. it's a minimum wage that doesn't work. it has to stop and it has to stop right here and it

eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live at jersey shore kala? >> reporter: lori, good morning. the three people, the mom and two kids, were brought here to the hospital. the two kids are in serious condition. better news for the mom. she is in stable condition. but let me show you the scene here from overnight in lakewood. take a look. in the middle of route 9 you can see the stroller that woman was pushing with her two kids inside laying on its side after the crash around 10:00 p.m. route 9 was closed for four hours overnight between central and pine street. it's back open. police tell us the mom was pushing two children in the stroller and the three were walking across route 9 when a black town car crashed into them seriously injuring the two children ages 1 and 4 years old. that town car was towed by police. the driver of the lincoln town car was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out but is not seriously hurt. police tell us they have interviewed the driver but no charges have been filed. that mom and two children are at the university shore medical center. the childr
