joining us now is democratic congresswoman, karen bass from california.he is now a los angeles mayor elect. thank you very much for joining us tonight on this very important night. before we get to your new job, can we spend a minute on the job you are leaving as a member of nancy pelosi's california delegation in the house of representatives. what is it meant to you to serve with nancy pelosi in the house of representatives? >> well, you know, i told the speaker a couple of days ago that one of the things i enjoyed the most about being in the house is watching her lead, especially having had that job in california. and she was just an absolute master. but you know i have to say something that i think is often overlooked. i don't think the country really realizes, and i know you do, how unstable things were during trump years. and if it wasn't for nancy pelosi, i still don't know what would happen to our country. mcconnell had abdicated his leadership. he acted like he was on trump's staff. and she was the only person, the only leader that kept us from go

joining me now is the mayor elect of los angeles, california, congresswoman karen bass. he second black person elected mayor of los angeles, but the first woman elected mayor of los angeles? >> it means that i have a tremendous responsibility on my shoulders. you know, los angeles is facing multiple crises. the crisis alone is a big responsibility, but to have history on my shoulders as well, that is even larger. >> you are holding it to your campaign promises. when you came on the show, after you announced, and i asked you why did you jump into the race, you said the number one reason was homelessness. so now that you are mayor elect, how are you going to address that in your first 100 days in office? what is your plan? >> well, on day one, which is december 12th, i will declare a state of emergency, bringing all of the various departments in the city together, centralize them so we can speed through the approval process to get people off of the streets immediately, build the first housing on city owned property. there needs to be temporary measures to get people off of

and you are succeeding a friend of mine, los angeles mayor elect karen bass.re coming in her seat at a record breaking number of 124 women will serve in the 118th congress this january. this new congress will include a record number of black, latina, and hispanic women in the house. 27 black women, 18 latina and hispanic. what do you think is driving the rise in the number of women in congress? >> well, thank you for having me. it is great to be on. we need to all raise a glass to congresswoman karen bass for becoming the first female to be the mayor of los angeles. women made great strides thanks to this election cycle. i think because our bodies were on the ballot like never before. and yet there are still hundreds of thousands of u.s. government seats that still have -- only been held by men. it is also important to note that the black and brown women getting to congress in record numbers. and, i like many of my colleagues, represent a district that is not majority african american. so my credibility to my constituents does not come because of my privilege.
