meteorologist karen maginnis here with us now. r a significant winter storm developing. and a major pacific storm blasts the west coast. we'll bring you details right after this. once there was a girl who always mixed and matched. even in her laundry room. with downy unstopables for long-lasting scent. and infusions for softness. she created her own mix, match, magic. downy, wash in the wow. >>> a winter storm is expected to create quite the delays for the holiday traveler, much like we saw over the thanksgiving holiday. but, guess what? this time it could be worse. the storm is expected to bring snow, rain, and high winds to more than two dozen states. cnn meteorologist karen maginnis here to tell us what we can expect. and any way to avoid it? >> it looks like the midwest the going to be the worst, but that's not going to be confined to that. we're looking at it up and down the eastern seaboard. but mostly a rain event in places like new york and boston and washington, d.c. but if you are traveling into or out of minneapolis, chi

let's get to meteorologist karen maginnis, joining us now. karen, how rare is something like this?at often. but when it does, it looks like this. take a look. they were just kind of fortunate to be in the right area at the right time. the beeps, well, you can imagine the person who was videotaping this was rather excited. >> [ bleep ]! >> yeah. there was some damage reported there. there were power outages, there were damage reports coming from a garage and several homes. but no one was injured. take a look at the mud slide, now. this is in camarillo springs. this happened in the middle of the night. there were mandatory evacuations and that was burn area about a year ago. and in the middle of the night, because of several inches of rainfall, that burn area just could not hold the debris back. some places saw the debris, boulders, in fact, up to their rooftops. we've got a live picture of what that looks like right now. and we will kind of show you around that area. this is a live view. you can see the home and the roofline. they're saying now about 18 homes are completely destroye

joining me now, meteorologist karen maginnis. e were several reported torn nados in the south today, karen. five of those -- was it five? how many completely were reported today? >> we were looking at 14 tornado reports. some of those may be duplicates. what we know right now, don. about 2:00 central time, we watched the atmosphere explode and watched super cells develop along the mississippi-louisiana border. in columbia, mississippi, traveling up, we watched as thunderstorms produced tornadoes around laurel, mississippi. already at least four fatalities. the national weather service will investigation widespread damage reported across this region. looked like the tornado touched down and lifted up again, reporting seeing multiple vor tevort vorteces. it was roaring along 50 to 60 miles an hour. we had a report of golf -- not golf ball but fruit size hail reported. and in florida, heavy downpours. in tallahassee, almost 7 1/2 inches of rain. >> goodness. let's talk about the flight delays. lots of flight cancellations, delays, ma

meteorologist karen maginnis joining us from the cnn weather center with more. deadly tornadoes? >> it has been widespread, wolf. it began in louisiana. we look at widespread potential from alabama into georgia and florida. already seeing a variety of problems there as well. let's take you back until 2:00 local time. that's central time in mississippi. went across columbia in marion county. two fatalities there. a number of buildings have been heavily damaged. a day care was affected by the tornado. there were children there, taken out to a bank. they say no children were injured but substantial damage to the day care along with other buildings. then we go to summerall and in the vicinity of laural, mississippi. they're saying two fatalties there as well. widespread damage, numerous power outage reported there as well. in tallahassee, our latest report of over rainfall and in the past hour, saying they were doing high water rescues. coming up in the next 24 hours, we look at substantial rainfall totals here. but wolf, widespread up and down the eastern sea board

karen maginnis, i have a feeling you have a misery map of your own when it comes to weather in the countryts looking at a storm system that's gathering strength across the interior west. up and down the seaboard we've got wet weather, overcast skies, low visibility and i'm afraid that you were with hundreds of people, hundreds of flights that were canceled. we had numerous delays, especially philadelphia yesterday. here's a big storm system across the interior west spelling out feet of snowfall. i just checked the weather conditions in aspen. it is 17 degrees there. coming up for christmas day, we'll expect some flurries right across the eastern great lakes. it's going to be very blustery. that rainfall ends. you won't see a white christmas in new york. you're not going to see a white christmas in boston. you have dreary weather that lasts the rest of the day. you'll see it during the early morning hours. santa will have to deal with those raindrops. look at what's happening across the great lakes. chicago, i think you dodged a bullet. a little bit of rain may change over briefly to snow.

meteorologist karen m maginnis at the cnn weather center. when's the chill expected?ng the northern tier. this arctic blast makes its way across the northern tier states, all the way down through texas, where in el paso, we saw a few frontal flurries. but the frontal system that sweeps from the great lakes down towards texas moves towards the east. that will allow a secondary shot of cold air to filter in behind it. it's going to be dramatically colder. some areas through the interior west looking at temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below average. but a good portion of the country will see temperatures that are a good 10 to 20 degrees below average, where they have been fairly mild over the last few weeks or so. here's that frontal system and the secondary big problem wlt weather, aside from this arctic blast is the wet weather along the west coast. some areas, all the way from houston to new orleans expect several inches of rainfall. this is low-lying territory. we do have some flood watches and advisories issued all the way to louisiana and into mississippi. then you c

karen karen maginnis is at the weather center now. >> karen, is this unusual to see a tornado in theimagine it's been quite a while. >> it has happened but unusual when we see a funnel cloud and in 1983 there was a march tornado that did damage to a convention center. let's show you all the activity across the west coast. southern california, ef0 tornado, no one injured in this, winds estimated at 65-85 miles an hour. let's look at camaril springs, in southern california, ventura county saying 18 homes are red-tagged, meaning they are going to be destroyed, essentially destroyed. there was a burn area here and because of that, there was nothing to hold back the rainfall of 2 1/2 inches and produced a lot of debris. a balcony collapsed in coastal california because of the rainfall, record amounts of rainfall between 1 and 2 inches in some of these areas. also, a home collapsed in the ocean. this was in los angeles. the rain came down, high winds associate with this as well. i want to mention not just the rain, snow levels. the people in california had been enduring such a miserable ye

. >> let's go to karen maginnis at the weather center. >> it looks like a powerful pacific storm systemto the mix of the heavy rainfall especially in some of those intercoastal regions. we could see as much as a foot in areas. one to two feet of snowfall. but the big information that we have to give you is that this is pacific moisture, because it's from the pacific that means there's a lot of warmer air. so the bulk of this in lower elevations is going to be rainfall. above the higher elevations you could see one to three feet of snowfall. in those low lying areas, mudslides, also debris flows especially where we've seen some of the burn areas so all the way from seattle to portland to just around the san francisco bay area, the rainfall continues, not just for today but even going into sunday as well. and beginning to taper off on monday. by monday afternoon it should all move out. we do have flash flood watches as well as warnings out, and this storm system is expected to move across interior sections of the west. so mountain snowfall expected to be heavy here, over the next several
