meteorologist, kari hall is tracking what you can expect today.r a red flag warning right now? >> yes, we are. the rest of the week we will be heating up, but we have a cool start to our morning, and into the afternoon. take a look at the wind speed forecast. we're starting out this morning, already gusting winds. most of us in the valleys already feeling the gusts, 15 to 20 miles per hour, and look at the bright colors here for the inland east bay. we're all up and down the diablo range. this is where we will have the highest fire danger today. with the northerly wind comes low humidity. winds at 35 to 25 miles per hour, and we may see gusts over 60 today, and still even into tonight and early tomorrow morning, it's still pretty gusty. we have a prolonged period of the high wind gusts, and you want to make sure even as you are stepping out this morning, everything around the house is secure and ready for the high winds today. our temperatures reaching into the mid and upper 60s for many of the microclimates. a few low 70s for the inland east bay

meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast. definitely cooler out there, kari. >> yes, it feels cooler for some spots but we are going to be warming up as we go into the rest of today. and that is going to be the trend over the next couple of days but also the gusty winds coming through the delta from the central valley and that is increasing our fire danger, the red flag warning now in effect, and then going into tomorrow and the start of the weekend it is going to be warmer. so saturday is going to feel like summer. and then on sunday, it is going to feel more like fall. so we do see a lot of changes as the seven day forecast comes up in the bottom of the screen. check it out. we're talking about the red flag warning right now for solano now notice that we don't have as much of the bay area included in this fire danger that we did earlier in the week. that is because for a lot of our valleys we're not going to have the winds coming all the way down into the valleys. it is kind of going through parts of the central valley and

let's check in with meteorologist, kari hall. kari, how long will that smoke linger in the bay area? >> it's going to start to move in later on this afternoon, late morning into the afternoon. some of the smoke starting to come in from the south of the alisal fire. moderate air quality, and that means people sensitive to the smoke, children and the elderly should limit time out there in the south and east bays, and it may not make it all the way up to the north bay. by 10:00, we're in the low 60s. when the temperatures warm up, most likely that smoke will be settling in. we will see the temperatures in the low 80s for san jose, and 83 in napa. for livermore, expect a high of 85 degrees. we'll talk more about more changes ahead in our weekend forecast. >>> mike, you are saying the alert does continue right now? >> it does. you know where the casino is, we have slowing when you get to the expressway. we have a closure for golf course drive. only the middle lane gets by. major damage, but no major injuries reported. not a lot of slo

meteorologist, kari hall is tracking what we can see weather-wise out there.see the fog so we know it's cooler in san francisco. how is it shaping up in other parts of the bay? >> we are going to see clouds all across the bay area. it's going to be hard to get rid of the clouds. maybe even just a peek of sunshine here and there, something we are not used to. we are also, i guess unfortunately, not used to seeing a lot of green dots here. we will have better air quality today as we see the system sweeping through. it's bringing in fresher air quality conditions for the bay area. as you are stepping out in concord, it's 61 degrees. we are still going to be at 61 degrees through about 9:00 and then seeing our temperatures slowly warming up from there with a mix of sun and clouds. as we head to the south bay, look at the highs for this afternoon. very nice. even a little cooler than normal, reaching up to about 74 degrees in morgan hill and los gatos, and the east bay seeing temperatures in the mid-70s. oakland reaching 68 degrees. you can see that 7-day forecast

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect weatherwise and it is not too bad kari at all. >> not bad al all. its been so nice to have the cooler weather. and we've got one more round of a chance of showers. i know you may have walked out the door this morning and said ooph, my car is like really dirty now. because you got spotty light showers overnight. there is another system up there that that will be dropping in fairly quickly and bringing some rain to some of us. but its also been really nice to see the snow falling in thera. that snow is winding down and it was only for the really high elevations. take a look at this from homewood ski area, there was a light dusting of snow earlier this morning. so that was really cool to see. and if you are lucky enough to be packing up the car and heading to south lake tahoe, well the rain is winding down but the temperatures there today only reaching 48 degrees and dropping down to 24 degrees tonight. we'll see more of those mid-20s for the morning hours. but it does get fairly mild for those afternoon hours into the end of th

. >> first let's begin with meteorologist kari hall. these conditions are expected to last until tomorrow night? >> this is an extended period of time deal with red flag warning conditions and for all the areas shaded in red, we'll still be under very critical time frame here until 5:00 tomorrow evening. we have extremely dry vegetat and the exceptional drought that's ongoing, along with the winds picking up and some humidity levels that will be very low. for those areas not included in the red flag warning, you are under a wind advisory. even in the valleys we'll start to see the winds continuing to pick up with some of those gusts up to about 30 miles per hour and this could bring down some trees and have more impacts on the power as well. but as we go through the forecast with our wind speed, the wind direction coming in from the north and our winds at about 25 to 35 miles per hour today. the bright purple shows where we will see some of those highest winds and that will be in elevations above 1,000 feet. even tonight it's still goin

how is it looking out there, kari?tarting out with clouds this morning that will hang around throughout today this next cold front moves into the bay area. going to continue to drop our temperatures as we're seeing the system passing by with not a lot of green on here, which would indicate some rain. we are looking at temperatures cooling down today, and it's heading toward 73 in milpitas and san jose. 73 as well in gilroy with a breezy wind and peeks of sunshine. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. as we head towards 74 in livermore as well as walnut creek, and hayward today staying in the upper 60s. near the coast we have lower 60s. at times fog rolling by, but otherwise a mainly cloudy sky. upper 60s for red would city. san francisco will reach up to about 64 in the mission district and 59 in the outer sunset. and it's going to feel nice and fall-like as we enjoy the fall-like weather. still, once again, cloudy throughout today and tomorrow as well as the first part of friday. even though we

sorry, kari, i took your spot. thank you. now, green over here on the east bay. a calmer situation. over here, the tree is down and we don't know what caused the eucalyptus tree to go down. it was closed between 35 skyline boulevard. folks were traveling away from the area, and they were getting reoriented. locals to the area know that when there is a tree down near alice's takeout, there's a problem. everything else moving smoothly. there's a pattern through contra costa county. a nice drive. the bay bridge toll plaza, we have a backup, drier roads and even spacing there. >>> yeah, we are starting out with scattered showers further to the north. this will make its way into the bay area later this morning, but looks like the north bay will have the highest chance of getting one more round of showers coming in. this is early in the afternoon where we see light rain moving into santa rosa, approaching napa, but the chances will be slighter there as we move into the rest of the day. it's going to be hit or miss with t

it's chilly out there, kari. >> yeah, cuddle up for a little longer.eing spotty showers in the north bay, and i powered up storm ranger to see where that rain is falling. there will be a slight chance we could see rain moving through with the quick moving system passing through the bay area. this is much cooler than normal, but if you are looking at the bottom of the screen in the 7-day forecast, this cool weather will be heating up over the next few days. let's talk about those winds because that has been the main story. it's mainly calm today. going into tomorrow, most of us in the valleys are looking at calm winds, and then we see bright reds here. these are our hills, our mountains seeing high winds starting tomorrow morning, continuing into the afternoon. it's also going to be windy over parts of the sacramento valley, and coming through the delta. that's what we will have, that red flag warning, but most of us will not experience the high winds. as we look at concord, we are going to the upper 60s today and the mid-80s for saturday. it will feel

go on, kari. >> you mean taco bell, right?no, that's a place my grandparents would never go. >> yeah. >> whenever there's a taco with the base being made out of a chip, i am sure that's not a authentic taco, right? >> why is taco day not on tuesday? they are always synonymous, right? there's a lot of people up and out the door on this monday morning, and we're still watching the air quality, and some of the worst of the air quality is going to be in the east bay. these numbers measure the particulate matter and when it gets above 50 that means it's moderate, above 100 would be unhealthy. our temperatures are heading towards the upper 80s and 90s. morgan hill heading towards 92 degrees today. we will see upper 80s in cupertino. 91 in concord today. and low 80s for san mateo, and upper 80s for palo alto. in san francisco we will still have warm temperatures in spots but looking at upper 80s in sonoma today and 91 in ukiah. we were watching the oil spill cleanup in huntington beach in southern california, and that may be complica

first our team coverage kicks off with meteorologist kari hall tracking it neighborhood by neighborhood. who is still seeing it all? >> the rain has cleared the bay area but we've been talking about what we've called the bomb cyclone for days now. and this is the reason why. as we loop the past 48 hours, we can see this storm intensify. it's called that because of the measures of low pressure in the center of the storm that dropped 24 millibars within the course of a day. when it intensified that quickly, we saw copious amounts of rainfall that happened to some tropical moisture and brought it right into the bay area. as we look at what's going on now, a lot of the rain tapering off but still that chance we could see a few spotty showers in the north bay as well as some other parts of the bay area by the next couple of hours. but, yes, take a look at the rainfall totals. all of this had to go somewhere. when it flowed down from mt. tam it went to a lot of the valleys and creeks and caused a lot of flooding. and santa rosa, over 8 1/2 inches of rain. oakland hills, more than 7 inches of

kari hall has been adding up how much we got last night. it's not a lot but we are excited and hopefully we're tracking a trend here. >> there will be a trend. what we got last night was not a lot and moved through so quickly. can you hang out longer? here's a look at the 18-hour loop and once again for much of the past several hours it was dry. quickly swept through the bay area. a lot spots in the tri-valley and parts of the south bay that didn't measure a lot. we have our next storm system coming our way. the long line of clouds and this one may have a lot more moisture associated with it and may move a lot more slowly which is going to be good for our rainfall totals. but we measured for some of our highest rainfall totals about a quarter inch in petaluma 0.1 and san francisco southward, less than 0.1 inch of rain. once again we're tracking another round of rain set to move in on wednesday. this will not bust the drought but may put an end to our wildfire season. we'll talk more about that coming up. >> looking forward to that. >>> you

fall-like temperatures finally coming our way, kari?our first strong cold front of the fall season coming through to make it feel like it's fall. and so as we look at our air quality, that's also been another issue we've had to monitor. and it is improving gradually for the coast and the bay. still moderate, as well as santa clara valley. we have good air quality for the north bay, east bay as well as the south bay in the forecast for this afternoon. right now 72 degrees in livermore. 73 in brentwood. 73 in dublin. warmer spots. take a look at the rest of the bay area. still in the 50s and 60s. when you compare this to 24 hours ago, look at that. it is 17 degrees cooler now in santa rosa than yesterday at this time. 11 degrees cooler in novato and 12 degrees cooler in san jose. if you are heading out for lunch, it's going to be much nicer. here's where we're headed for our afternoon highs reaching into the upper 70s in the south bay. and the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. morgan hill reaching 80 today coming out of the

vianey arama in for kari hall.'ve been watching the storm closely. >> simply because we haven't had rain in a very long time. we have the first to move in late last night. kicked up some of those winds and the wind advisory has been canceled. i want to show you a little bit of your travel commute. we have a chance of seeing scattered amounts. temperatures will be in the 60s this afternoon. then as we roll around into the later portion of tonight, we're going to get a break from the rain. heading into thursday, we've got plenty of instability. this is going to bring in our second storm heading into thursday night and friday morning. so far we've only gotten a couple hundreds of an inch. we're hoping for better rain totals heading into saturday's storms. now let's get a check on how the roads are doing with mike. >> not so bad. maybe slicker in some spots. in san jose, pretty dry. the traffic did build up for the shot. a cash north of 101, shy of the 180 transition ramp. as i understand, it's out of the lanes. it's a

we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall.he bay area could be in for some dangerous conditions? >> yeah. once again, we're still tracking a high fire danger and a red flag warning, but it won't be as widespread as the event we had to start out the week. today it looks like the red flag warning includes solano county as the winds rush through the sacramento valley and through the delta. may also include participates of the north bay hills. by late morning into the afternoon we're looking at wind speeds about 35 to 45 miles an hour. much of us in the valleys won't see those high winds. we're looking at light breezy conditions and temperatures coming

vianey is in for kari.e all talking about the rain. >> yeah, that's right, especially because we have not seen as much rain, and it's going to be a welcomed sight. it will be a rainy commute tomorrow morning, but the first half of today will be dry and cloudy, and we will top out in the mid and upper 60s for the entire bay area. this is a great opportunity to clear out the gutters, anything that you don't want to get wet or fly away in your backyard, bring it inside. fantastic storm prep opportunity for the first half of the day, and by tonight we get our next system that rolls through and then we keep that instability for the next several days in the bay area, so get ready. >> yeah, and to review, vianey said the next several days. >>> we have slowing right here in san josÉ, right where we expect and when we expect, 20 minutes ago we said the slowing would start there and it does, almost every day right here, 101 just north of 680. up to oakland road, standard build that lasts half an hour and then easing

kari, you say more rain is in the works as well? >> yeah, and it may not put an end to the drought but it could put an end to the wildfire season. we'll keep an eye on that. tomorrow we will see showers moving in late tomorrow evening. the rest of the week, off and on rain. yes, it may be more measurable than what we just had. as we look at the rain water year update. we have had less than 0.1 of an inch in santa rosa, and still at a deficit of half an inch. we can see the rainfall deficits running up to three quarters of an inch. looking at concord reaching into the 60s. tonight dropping back into the low and mid-40s. >>> yeah, we have a clear ride out of san francisco. the lower deck, there was a hit-and-run crash around treasure island and the off-ramps there, and nothing complicated the road after that, and whoever was hit kept moving as well. unfortunately, somebody was hit. the good news, not impacting your trip on i-80. there's a wind advisory on the dumbarton bridge. do be careful for the slicker conditions as this is the fi

meteorologist, kari hall, of course, has been monitoring that. kari, when i got out of the car this morning it was cold. >> did you put on the seat heater? >> i didn't. >> i think a lot of people will do that, as well as some turning on the windshield wipers. we have seen us go from warm and chilly conditions now to chilly and wet weather. by tomorrow we will have winds picking up and we are back to some parts of the bay area dealing with the high fire danger. red flag warnings going up. gusting winds along with low humidity -- take a look at our relative humidity. tomorrow, nice and high and then tomorrow afternoon some areas looking at relative humidity numbers in the teens. once again, when we start to see that it's the potential of fire starting and spreading rapidly. >>> mike, that crash in pinole not having a ripple affect? >> yeah, it's affecting folks coming off the carquinez bridge. appian way is here. look at that, san pablo avenue, we have been watching the sensors and that's jamming up as well. that is a tough drive on the upper part

but things will clear up and get warm again, kari? >> yeah, going to feel like summer for a couple days. we have a return of a lot of the issues we have seen this summer, too. we'll talk about in that a second. once again, that fog is out there, and it will look clear as the south bay heads to the upper 80s. east san jose, 87 degrees, and 86 in los gatos. in the east bay, 86 in walnut creek, up to 80. for the coastline, mid-70s. it's going to be a really nice day out at the beach, reaching 74 in half moon bay, and 74 in the outer sunset. now, of course, as we deal with the warmer air, we are also going to have to deal with the hazy sky. the smoke that is going to be coming in today actually coming in from the alisal fire in southern california. we have a southerly wind and boost in temperatures and moderate air quality for parts of the south bay and east bay today. it doesn't look like it makes it into the north bay, but we are dealing with, once again, the air quality issues like we did most of the summer. as we go into the weekend,

kari hall tracking a cooldown and how long it will last. this is "today in the bay." >>> thursday morning. a good one to you. thanks so much for joining us. >> i'm marcus washington. we're getting a look at the commute in just a bit, but let's start with meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast. >> it's nice to have changes in our weather. take a look at all the clouds. even some light mist and drizzle moving in as we are tracking yet another front moving closer to the bay area. we're starting out cloudy and in walnut creek we're in the upper 50s. we are going to see temperatures continuing to cool off throughout the morning, only in the mid 50s around sunrise and seeing some peeks of sunshine for the start of the day. notice these temperatures that will only make it into the 60s for many of our micro climates, san francisco reaching 63 and 70 in clear lake. we'll see more weather like this tomorrow, but big changes ahead for the weekend. >> we have scattered incidents popping up on the maps throughout the south bay and tri valle
