what can we expect today, kari? >> starting out nice and cool around the bay area, but we will see temperatures that warming up over the next few hours. the heat advisory begins at 11:00 this morning, and some of the areas were under the heat advisory yesterday. this goes until 11:00 p.m., and our inland areas are headed for the upper 80s and low 90s. watch out for the potential for setting new records today, with santa rosa expected to hit 95 degrees today, and that's the record high set back just a couple years ago, or just last year. in san francisco, we're expecting to reach 90 degrees today. that would break a record that was set in 1913. in oakland as well as livermore, san josÉ will reach in the low 90s which would be a new record high temperature. let's get a look at all of our microclimates and what to expect with temperatures hitting 99 in gilroy today. hot temperatures in the south county, and antioch reaching 97 degrees, and 92 in oakland and 92 in san mateo. san francisco once again headed for 90 degree

meteorologist kari hall is here.probably one of your most favorite times of the day. >> yeah, but it's getting later and later. sometimes it's after the show, we have this glorious sunrise, at least i can enjoy it in the evening, the sunsets as well. as we take a look at what you're feeling as you get ready to head out the door, it's in the mid-40s in parts of the north bay, as well as the south county. mid-50s elsewhere for the peninsula. then as we take a look at the trend for today, it starts out cool in morgan hill at about 50 degrees, the kids may step out wearing a jacket, but look at how warm it's going to be at pickup time. so make sure the name is on the tag. they will not be wearing it later on today, as those temperatures heat up. it's going to be a drastic change from what we had over the weekend to what we are going to see today and the next few days, as our inland areas, especially, get some really warm temperatures. we'll talk more about that and what's ahead in a few minutes. >>> mike says you may wan

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> welcome back. >> thank you. it's going to really heat up over these next few days. it's going to be, like, starting out nice and cool, and then going towards 90s by the middle of the week. but we do see a system dropping in that's going to bring us a chance of showers for parts of the north bay as you head out into this afternoon. so as we take it hour-by-hour, we do see that chance of rain around ukiah, clear lake, parts of northern sonoma county, in santa rosa we could see that at 5:00 this evening. we go throughout much of the day with dry conditions. clouds linger and we're going to have a mostly cloudy and cool day, as our highs reach into the mid to upper 70s. by tomorrow we see temperatures starting to heat up just a few degrees, but then by wednesday we're talking about 90s in the inland valleys. so you're going to have another blast of summer. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >>> mike, you're saying it's a good monday morning on the peninsula? >> it was until i heard about 90s in our future.

kari is still tracking this heat. >> it's going to be very hot today. today is the peak of the heat as we reach into the upper 90s in some spots. but a lot of 80s here. you want to make sure you're planning your day around those temperatures and trying to get in the outdoor activities before it gets really hot going into the afternoon. when we take a look at what's normal for this time of year, santa rosa is usually at about 80 degrees, but we're headed for 94 today. san francisco reaching 87 degrees. we are usually in the low 70s. oakland reaching 90 this afternoon, with a normal high temperature of 73 degrees. we're usually a lot milder than this as we deal with heat that's going to ramp up to the upper 80s today, and it's going to be pretty hot tomorrow as well, especially for the inland valleys. so we'll have more on this, and also some events going on this weekend. >>> mike, you were looking for a traffic break. >> heading toward powell, exactly where we're looking. it may be just on the other side, the traffic coming here off of the bay bridge. re

we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall, who has been following all of this. this seems to come out of nowhere. >> with it intensifying so rapidly, they didn't have a chance to evacuate. we continue to see this affecting a large part of the western coast of mexico as it continues to move in. it is weakening very quickly and it is now a category 2 hurricane, so the good thing is that it is continuing to weaken. but it has already caused catastrophic damage, as we typically see with a category 5 hurricane. as we take a look at right now the wind speeds at 110 miles per hour, we are going to possibly see this weaken as it moves towards more mountainous terrain, and it will quickly weaken to a tropical depression as the rain spreads out across the region. now what we're watching with otis is the torrential rainfall that could reach anywhere from 8 to 16 inches in total, and so that would cause flooding, as well as landslides and strong winds. also, the life-threatening storm surge, still the concern there, as it continues to move inland. they did have hurricane pa

. >> we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. it seems to pretty much come out of nowhere. >> it did strengthen quickly from a tropical storm to a category 5, in a period of less than a day, over about 12 hours. now we can see, with that live shot, that things are basically returning to normal there for some of the vacationers. but this is going to be anything but a vacation for people who are dealing with some very catastrophic rainfall, even the size has shrunk quite a bit as this is now a category 2 hurricane. still packing wind speeds of 110 miles per hour. but it's also moving over a very mountainous terrain, and so it's going to cause the tropical system to lose a lot of its strength as we go throughout today into the day tomorrow. but we're looking at a forecast of 8 to 16 inches of rainfall. that's going to cause a lot of flooding, landslides, as well as some strong winds, and then we also have the threat of that life-threatening storm surge. the last hurricane that we had of this magnitude was in 1997, and that one kille

kari, downgraded now, so where is it centered? >> it is continuing to move through southern mexico, but this storm is being ripped to shreds by the mountains that are producing some of the heavier rainfall that we're seeing from this storm. but it just developed so quickly yesterday, going from a tropical storm to a category 5 in less than 12 hours. that was the reason why a lot of people didn't get a chance to evacuate. but now, as we look at these latest frames of this, it is basically a lot of clouds, some breezy winds, but the rain continues to dissipate. but this still was very powerful as it made landfall and is now producing wind speeds at 60 miles per hour as it moves to the north-northwest at 10 miles per hour. so, we are going to continue to see this weakening throughout the day, most likely not even a tropical storm by later on this evening. what we are seeing with storms like this with climate change is that there's just so much more energy available with warmer ocean temperatures as well as warmer air temperatures. we

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect. you say it will warm up today. >> it started out so cold this morning. >> it was cold. >> it's starting to feel better. we have the sunshine working in our favor, and it will continue to be sunny the rest of the day. i know this shot looks a little hazy, but we are enjoining sunshine in palo alto, and the temperature is at 63 degrees. it's going to quickly go from low 60s to low 70s, and we'll reach that high temperature right at about 4:00 to 5:00, and then start to see the temperatures dipping again for the evening. but briefly, we'll reach into the mid-70s around the bay and even some upper 70s for santa rosa, morgan hill headed for 77 degrees, los gatos reaching 77 as well. for halloween, we'll see temperatures going up a little more for the south county. some of our inland areas in the mid to upper 70s, while san francisco will reach a high of 71 degrees. overall, it does look nice for these next several days, but we're just watching out for a couple of systems coming in that cou

there's the sort of blue sky we were looking for earlier this morning, kari. that was socked in by fog. >> we started with fog, but it's all cleared out. we're sunny, but we'll seal more clouds coming in today. as we take a look at the beautiful view, it is still all clear and blue, but we have a weather system approaching from the north that will bring in clouds over the next couple hours. we can see all the rain around redding and eureka at this point. it's starting to move into some of our north bay towns closer to ukiah within the next few minutes with some light showers. but the system is basically just going to fall apart before it gets here for the most part. we'll see a mostly cloudy day. our temperatures are held down as a result of some afternoon cloud cover. we'll reach a high of 75 in fremont as well as in hayward and upper 70s for the north bay. watching for those areas for that slight chance of rain. so, we'll talk more about that and some midweek heat. i'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. >>> a new recall effort aga

kari has a look at our temperatures. it's clear out there, so probably cold. >> a beautiful, clear shot there, and around the bay area. no issues with fog, not even in the north bay. we've seen those morning temperatures dipping into the upper 30s there. as we move down to the south bay, a look at our highs this afternoon, nice recovery. we go from starting our morning in the 30s and 40s to hitting a high of 77 in san jose, and 80 in morgan hill. much of the east bay will be in the mid to upper 70s, with danville a high of 75 degrees there, and 77 in fremont. in san mateo, 75 there, and in redwood city, san francisco, low 70s, with the mission district reaching 73 degrees and 75 today in napa. not much of a change in our temperatures, but we will have some rain chances eventually. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >>> mike, is the gas price now a trick or a treat? >> a little more of a treat, i guess. that would be a trick for people expecting it to go up. santa clara, best deal is $4.55, that's at costco on c

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. the rain is gone for now? >> the rain is gone for a little while and we're heading for cooler temperatures. as we get a look at our visibility, that's the main issue, especially for the north bay, where we are seeing dense fog developing, especially around novato where visibility is down to about a quarter of a mile. so make sure you're allowing extra time to get to work this morning. as we take a look at santa rosa, it is 50 degrees and foggy there, as we are seeing, once again, the low visibility, starting out with cool temperatures. we're in the low 50s now, but it's going to clear up and shape up to be a really nice day. a little warmer in some spots compared to yesterday afternoon. we'll talk about a cooldown coming our way in just a few minutes. >>> mike, you've had a couple of hazards reported. >> we're looking at a pretty smooth drive right now. fog, of course, that's not the hazard we're talking about. a disabled vehicle on the lower vehicle between san rafael and richmond. we have a disabled vehicle

kari has look at the temperatures that are creeping up. >> yes. we've been talking a lot about the high heat that's about to blast us for a few days now, as we see a big change here. as we look at what we are feeling as you get ready to head out for lunch, it's definitely different compared to yesterday, where in the north bay, i'm really noticing how much warmer it is in santa rosa compared to yesterday, about 22 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. and in napa, it is 84 degrees. upper 70s elsewhere across the bay area. what's happening here is we're getting a northerly wind pushing in, and that's ramping up some of those temperatures along with some low humidity in parts of the north bay. it's pretty breezy right now with a northerly wind at 12 miles per hour. and in the month of october, when we start to get these dry northerly winds, unfortunately, that increases our fire danger, so we'll have to be really careful here as the vegetation has reached its maximum amount of dryness for the year. we're also going to have some warm temperatur

meteorologist, kari hall, is looking at what we can expect. >> it's going to be a nice afternoon, bute start out chilly. outside in oakland as you head off to work, we are already seeing a lot of people out the door. pleasant hill, starting out at 45 degrees. take a look at the recovery we will have. for the afternoon and even after a cool start, we will head for the upper 60s and low 70s. 68 in fremont. 69 in los gatos and novato. as we take it into the day tomorrow, really not much of a change. some of our coastal areas get cooler, and as you make saturday plans expect it to be a touch warmer with the low 70s. >>> relatively speaking, folks who are not familiar with the bay bridge toll plaza will give an ooph. once you get past the toll plaza, everything is moving nicely into san francisco. a little build in and out of richmond and through richmond. a little more slowing out of vallejo. nice and smooth for highway 4. the cinder block still out there, so watch for that. there could be degree in the lanes of oyster point boulevard. >>> and scott mcgrew made us a new holiday, and you p

right now we want to get a look at meteorologist kari hall and you've been telling us about this all san jose is include in the heat advisory and other areas that aren't usually in a heat advisory. san francisco, parts of the peninsula and parts of the inner bay. as we take a look at the golden gate bridge, we see activities in and around the city as we are getting fleet week under way and we are dealing with some october heat for all of these areas in orange and the heat advisory continues for today as well as tomorrow. so during these times when the temperature starts to ramp up we want to make sure that we are reducing outdoor activity and drinking lots of water and watching out for signs of heat-related illness and that will be a definite possibility as we deal with high temperatures into the mid-90s in the afternoon and we're headed to the mid-90s and high heat tomorrow and we'll take a look at that coming up in our full microclimate forecast. >> we'll check with you, kari. >> new developments and there's been an attack following the death of a san francisco store clerk. johanne

meteorologist kari hall than tracking those conditions. it's still windy down there. what are firefighters faced with right now. >> there are still winter weather advisories -- wind advisories, but a light wind can do a lot talking about fire conditions and dry vegetation. we're at 74 degrees. some of those gusts so far have only made it to about 5 to 10 miles per hour, but look at the humidity. it's only at 7%. it is extremely dry in southern california. where we do continue to see that fire spreading rapidly and as we go into afternoon, the high temperature heads for 79 degrees, some of those gusts to about 10 miles per hour, and the humidity dropping down to only 5%. extremely dry air that we are seeing may also aid in that fire continuing to spread. as far as the red-flag warning, it is well to the north of where that fire has started, so these critical fire conditions will continue throughout the day. some of those gusts farther to the north may reach 30 to 50 miles per hour, so across the region, it is critically dry and at times, we are seeing those winds picki
