we want to bring in meteorologist, kari hall, right now. rain do we need to get out of the drought right here. >> you can see how big it is. the drought gives you a picture of what is going on across the region. these small rainfalls are good, but they are not going to erase years for the huge deficits of the rainfall. still, it's historic here when we take a look at how much rain we need. let's take a look at the big buckets here. this is san josÉ. the last few years we had seven inches of rain, but normal is about 13 1/2. the next year we had five inches of rain, and still not close to that 13 1/2. last year, only two inches of rain. so when you add all of this up we need about 14 inches of rain each year to really go above and beyond and help out with the drought. once again, it shows that this is a drop in the bucket and these buckets are humongous. >> yeah, we need a lot of rain but not at one time. >> right. >>> let's go to mike right now, because, of course, people driving on the roads are experiencing the wet roads right now. >> yea

meteorologist, kari hall, tracking how long this will last. this is "today in the bay." >>> a lot to get to on this tuesday morning. we're broadcasting on your television and streaming live on nbcbayarea.com. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. >>> the rain, kari, where is it right now? >> we're seeing it in the north bay and san francisco as we track it on storm ranner. some of the spotty showers coming through the east bay and the bulk of the heavy rain moved through overnight and seems like everything we were forecasting is right on target. we will see wet weather out there but much of the heavier rain moved on. light rain making the roads wet over toward concord and san rafael, and we are seeing the rain continue around san mateo, light showers near palo alto and around milpitas, and may head back to san josÉ within the next few minutes. the heavy rain is now to the south of the bay area, it's snowing in the sierra, and we are going to see the spotty showers throughout the morning, and then tapers off going into the afternoon. we

kari hall, tracking the rain back our way?>> nice to see we will see decent storms coming in here and then we will take a break. we will be tracking this storm with storm ranger. the red scanner seeing there, it's going to give us a detailed view of what's coming in and also how heavy that rain is falling. might have spotty light sprinkles possible, and then we will see the break in the clouds right there and then here's the storm that will be moving in, pushing first into parts of the north bay and the coastal areas later this evening. at about 4:30 we will see lighter showers out on the leading edge of this moving in and then continuing to spread across the bay area, with the peak of the storm around 10:00 to 11:00 in parts of the east bay, and moving down to the south bay later on this evening. after that, we're looking at off and on showers through tomorrow morning, and then tapering off for tomorrow afternoon. by tomorrow afternoon, we will be clear. we're looking at rainfall totals anywhere from 2 to 4 inches with higher

i want to bring in meteorologist, kari hall.how much rain we will need to get us all of the drought here in this era? >> it's not just the bay area. this is across the west and what we are calling a mega drought where you have these conditions for a span of 20 years. >> wow. >> the rainfall that we have seen is good, but it's a small drop in the bigger bucket and some of the worst of the drought from napa to solano and over towards alameda ask contra costaa county, and in 2019, there were several inches. the next year we measured five inches. but normal, once again, 13 1/2. last year was really bad. we only measured two inches but the normal amount is 13 1/2, so we need at least maybe even 150% of the normal rainfall year after year to dig us out of the drought. we are seeing conditions like this in san francisco, and last year they measured 7 1/2, and that's nothing compared to the 22.89 inches they normally get. all of this is good, but we need this for several months and then years on end to dig us out of this major drought t

kari hall has a look at the weather. >> it's going to be a nice day. a lot of sunshine after the fog clears out. los gatos and east san josÉ headed up to 68 degrees. for the east bay we will see temperatures in the mid-60s with fremont reaching up to 68 degrees, but antioch cooler with the fog hanging on and a high of 65 degrees. also looking at about a high of 65. you see the temperatures are uniform from the coast to the inland areas, not a big difference here with downtown san francisco reaching 65, and also 65 in sonoma and ukiah today reaching 67 degrees. here's a look at the overall picture and the next system coming our way, and there's not a whole lot to it. as we go into the next couple of days we will see this quickly racing through, and most of the rain coming through the over night hours and starting out with spotty showers by thursday into friday morning, and we will see the showers lingering into friday with parts of the south bay as well. the east bay, we could see the rain moving throughly and we are only looking for most of the bay are

let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. think it will warm up later today?nice afternoon. you just need a warmer jacket for the start of the day. and visibility for the most part has been good all around the bay area for oakland, as you head out. it's in the upper 40s. we're seeing a warming trend in the forecast throughout the morning. reaching into the mid60s later today. don't have the dense fog we've seen lately around the bay and there's still some patchy fog around novato. for the most part we do see a clear start and headed for a sunny day. reaching into the mid-60s for dublin. low 70s for morgan hill. santa rosa, temperatures there reaching 70 degrees and we have more sunshine in the forecast for our holiday week. i'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are seeing more of a backup out of the east bay. >> 580. this is 580 at the richmond bridge heading over towards san rafael. the backup forming. looks like quite a volume of traffic but it's really just at the toll plaza itself. that little blip. this crash also off to the shou

meteorologist, kari hall, has been tracking that. say rain coming our way, another atmospheric river? >> yes, and if we were to rate this on a scale of 1 to 5, this is about a 3 so it's pretty significant. it's going to bring us rainfall amounts over the next 24 hours, and it's not here yet and we want to make sure you are ready before heading out this morning. we could see rain in parts of the north bay by 4:00 or 5:00, and we will have a lot to work through as it arrives and it will take several hours. ahead of the storm, i wanted to show you how we are doing with our water year, and right now we already measured over 11 3/4 inches in santa rosa. keep in mind this reset on october 1st, oakland measured five inches of rain, and a surplus of over four tphfrps of rain, and you will see how well we are doing before the next boost. you can see this is what the radar could look like at about 5:00 to 5:30, move into san francisco and getting heavier for parts of the north bay by 8:00, and then really intense rain by about 10:00 to 11:00 a

kari hall tracking the rain in some parts of the bay area. we needed it for so long and it just keeps coming. >> a much lighter storm, and we have another we will be tracking for thursday into wednesday. right now it's light in parts of the north bay. been kind of off and on with a steady shower further to the north. as you are heading out this morning, it's wet, and you have to turn on the wind shield wipers and with the scattered showers that continues today, it will be spreading across much of the rest of the bay area. tomorrow we will see sunshine and cool temperatures. we will still be watching out for more showers later this week, as we look at an over all trend. we will see more of the rain moving in with the focus mainly on the north bay. what we will see on the peninsula is heavy at times before the east bay and south bay, and the rain will be much lighter and more spread out, so maybe not all of us will see that. we will be watching that, mike, and we're tracking a crash in oakland. >> just a little slowing just showed up right belo

meteorologist, kari hall, has been tracking what you can expect throughout the day. looking nice out there for us? >> yeah, we are starting out with clouds, mist and drizzle and some fog, but not bad. we are going to see the clouds and temperatures in the upper 50s at drop off, but pickup time it's going to be perfect, 60s and sunny. just a little warmer compared to yesterday. a lot more sunshine as antioch and morgan hill head toward 70 degrees. we'll see mid to upper 60s mostly across the bay area. we'll talk about the next few days, coming up. >>> mike, how does it look at the golden gate bridge? >> wanted to show the fog descending now, and impeding some of the view of the south tower, and can't see the north tower. there's a possibility of patchy spots around the north bay. typical pattern. we're looking at 37, highway 4 and the bay bridge toll plaza, of course, and we have a slight build forming with a little slowing from the richmond headed over to san rafael. we have a lot of bridges here, right. we have san mateo, and dumbarton bridge moving smoothly. a litt

heading out for black friday or want to go running to work off the turkey you ate, meteorologist kari hall is tracking what you can expect. hey, kari, happy friday. >> happy friday. you can log your miles on the silicon valley turkey trot. check out the website for that. now we're starting out at 40 degrees in santa rosa, and we'll see the temperatures going from the low 40s to mid-50s by midmorning. by 11:00 we're at 55 degrees, headed for the low 60s for today. across the bay area, we're basically seeing a repeat of yesterday. maybe just a little bit warmer in some spots like san jose and morgan hill, reaching near 70 degrees. we'll keep an eye on that. vianey has been watching the conditions around the south bay. >> that fire's cleared out. i do have an update on an earlier crash. unfortunately it was a deadly crash in san francisco, northbound 101. that sig alert has been canceled, and they're working to complete lie reopen all of the lanes, but it is still going to take some time to recover after they had closed off every single lane through this area. if this is a part of your stretc

meteorologist kari hall, she's been tracking that forecast, and i'm excited about it. >> i'm ready to go out for lunch. we are going to have nice outdoor lunch weather with sunshine that will continue the rest of the day but we have parades going on in san jose. it kicks off at noon and it will be at about 68 degrees. headed for the low 70s this afternoon. it feels very comfortable out and around the bay area. with our temperatures headed for 73 in napa, san raphael 70 degrees while san francisco is headed for the upper 60s, half moon bay will see a high of 66 degrees. so all of the clouds we had earlier this morning clearing out and we can see the storm track still well to the north of us. we'll be tracking that rain as it moves up around portland but for us it stays dry for the next few days. we'll talk about when the atmospheric river will wave back our way as it does this time of year and when we can see rain chances in our forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. >>> developing now, san francisco police are investigating a crash that killed a teachers assistant. video of the i

meteorologist kari hall tracking those conditions for us.i just can't complain about today's forecast. >> i don't think anybody can. it's been so nice. and we're getting ready to head out of here. finally able to see the sunshine, right? we've been inside all morning. so i just can't wait to get in some of the sunshine that we're seeing across the bay area. and we are also seeing these views over toward the east bay looking outside at walnut creek. yesterday and the day before, it seems like it was so foggy but it did clear out for the afternoon. we've got that sunshine earlier today. right now 60 degrees and headed for the low 60s during the middle of the day. not really much warmer than where we are right now as we head to the south bay. we'll see a high of 68 in san jose. morgan hill reaching 69 degrees and you're probably looking at the bottom of the screen at the seven-day forecast. not many changes temperaturewise but we will see some rain coming in here. and we'll talk about that. plnts pleasanton, 66 degrees and 66 in redwood city. i

can only find all of that right here on nbc bay area. >>> time now to check in with meteorologist kari hall'll get to vianey with the traffic in just one second, but kari has a look at what we can expect this thanksgiving day. a lot of people like to get out, play football, go for a run. how is it going to look? >> we have some great weather for all of that, especially this afternoon. i think new york sent us some of their temperatures because we're starting out in the upper 30s this morning. take a look at how cold it is in morgan hill. 36 degrees, and some of these valleys that are not here at the airport locations in the north bay have dipped into the mid-30s and below freezing farther to the north. as we take a look nationwide at what's going on with travel delays, airport delays, that are all good right now, even though we have a storm system moving across the midwest, i should say, across the pacific northwest, we are seeing good travel conditions in seattle, with some of those scattered showers moving in here locally. we are all seeing clear conditions for now, but as we go into the
