meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect.s was one of those mornings i stepped outside, and it was like, oh, it's cold. >> it's cold again, and we're going to have more chilly mornings, and then we get ready for some rain. today we're also dealing with unhealthy air quality, so just a heads-up before you head out, and as you go throughout the day, you might want to limit your time outside. unhealthy for sensitive groups, and that includes people with any kind of heart condition or breathing problem. it is a spare the air alert, meaning that you do not burn any wood today. we're also trying to reduce our carbon emissions as you're driving, commuting around the bay area, if you can, catch public transit. it does start out chilly and we're headed for the upper 50s for much of the east bay. watching out for the development of fog that may linger throughout the morning, but then after that, a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the upper 50s. tomorrow the rain will be coming in. >>> i wanted to give you a look at what's happ

now let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. talking about another foggy start. >> yes, we've seen the fog rolling around, but it's definitely not as widespread or as dense as it was yesterday. so we are seeing a clearer drive for now. but a dense fog advisory is in effect as we wait for the possibility of lower clouds to settle in. we're going to see quarter mile visibility in parts of the north bay from napa to santa rosa, and half moon bay it's about half mile visibility, but mainly clear elsewhere. as far as temperatures, it's headed for the upper 50s and low 60s and mid-60s for the south bay. it will be cooler as we get ready for rain that will be arriving late this morning into the afternoon. i'll have more on that timeline coming up. >>> mike, what do you see on the san mateo bridge? >> i see smooth traffic. look underneath the lights, we see the curtain effect here. so there is definitely moisture in the air, but not like yesterday where it was so foggy we couldn't really see the cars at all. the fog is still moving arou

meteorologist kari hall has it for us today. more rain? >> yes, we are going to start to see the rain coming in for the afternoon. for the north bay, it's a little earlier but does start out light. we're still tracking big waves along the coastline. we went from having a high surf warning to a high surf advisory. so it's basically a step down but still means that conditions will be dangerous until this evening. then we'll see that rain coming in for the afternoon, maybe heavy at times. and those wind gusts will start to pick up late morning and continue into the afternoon, along the coast and in the santa cruz mountains, we could see gusts 45 plus miles per hour, with the storm coming in. and then looking ahead, we'll see more rain chances early next week, but now we're focused on this storm that's coming in. we can see that low barreling closer to our coastline and pushing up a lot of the high winds and rain that we'll see as we go throughout today, off and on showers as we go into this afternoon, picking up for this evening, and then gra

ginger conejero saab is live at half moon bay, but first kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> now we are still seeing the impacts as the storm continues to move in, and a high surf warning will be in effect from now until 3:00 a.m. on friday. we continued with scattered showers and breezy winds at times and there will be a new storm moving in by tomorrow evening. we are watching the impact of all of this coming in, and the storms out over the pacific and churning up the waves and big breakers that are expected to reach 25 to 30 feet, and the high surf warning in effect until friday, once again, and at the same time we can see sneaker waves coming in that will make it dangerous, and that's coming at the same time we have the king tide season approaching. along the coastal areas and bayshore, we may see flooding happening by friday morning, and high water levels will continue. we will continue to see the impacts, at least over the next few days. i will be tracking this. we will talk about the next round of rain coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. >>> if you are heade

meteorologist, kari hall, monitoring what is happening weather-wise across the bay area.ow are things looking, kari? >> we are kicking it off with the union square menorah lighting tonight, and for this evening we are partly cloudy and temperatures in the upper 50s at the time of the menorah lighting. going into late tonight with temperatures drop into the low 50s. bundle up, whether you are doing that or the fantasy of lights, in the drive through in los gatos this evening. temperatures there will be about 55 degrees. 52 at 8:00, and drop into the upper 40s later tonight. a chilly one there as well as cool temperatures. ice-skating will be in the upper 40s. getting ready for the warriors came this weekend at the chase center, it will be in the mid-50s. saturday night, low 50s there. we will have chilly temperatures in tahoe this weekend, and looking at dry conditions to start, and then by sunday some rain and snow will be coming down. mike, you are looking at the backup at the toll plaza. >> yeah, it forms very quickly, kari. we saw folks slowing down so something is goi

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that.s so many parts of the bay area where we don't normally see it. >> no, especially not for the peninsula, and we're seeing it into the south bay. the dense fog advisory in effect until 10:00 this morning, which includes parts of the delta, the bayshore, and down to the south carolina and along the coastline. but in the north bay we've seen fog continue from the past several days into this morning. we're also watching out for the return of king tides, those higher than normal tides we see bring up water a lot higher, and so this will be in effect from now through at least the end of the month. and during the time of about 8:00 to 1:00 p.m., we have the very high tides, but we also have extremely low tides from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., which also we have isolated flooding issues for some of those trails and some of though bayshore areas that deal with that during the high tides. so we'll be watching out for that and talk about incoming rain in our forecast in a few minutes. >>> as you well know

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring all of this.re going to see this stick around for much of the morning, right? >> yeah, the dense fog advisory really hitting the peninsula pretty hard. if you do have to drive anywhere from san carlos to san francisco, even up to novato, we've seen visibility in some spots just a few feet above your headlights or beyond your headlights. so be really careful, slow it down. at least it is clear in parts of the south bay and the tri-valley. also included in the dense fog advisory, we are going to see clouds lingering, going to mid-60s this afternoon. the south bay will get sunshine and temperatures reaching into the low to mid-70s. we'll talk about changes ahead. >>> mike, the fog a factor for the drive. >> right. it was visible, and we had low clouds blocking our view of this beautiful sunrise for a bit. now in san jose, this particular camera looks great with the volume of traffic. over here, mild slowing. up toward mountain view, an earlier disabled vehicle caused quite a backup, blending with fol

meteorologist kari hall warned us about this. and you say today will get extra sloppy. >> yes, and the wind is going to continue to pick up. we're seeing it along the coastline, but as the storm continues to spread across the bay area, rain and wind expected. some of the heavier activity not until later today. what we're seeing now is light and will taper off after, i would say, the next three or four hours, and then give us a brief break before the very heavy rainfall starts to move in at 2:00 to 3:00. it's approaching santa rosa and may include some thunderstorms. that's going to be rolling across the bay area into 4:00 to 5:00, really having a high impact on the evening commute. we're looking at winds at the same time that all of this heavy rain is coming down, our winds could gust 20 to 45 miles per hour, maybe even higher along the coastline. and then going into this evening, it's going to eventually start to wind down. we'll wake up tomorrow with spotty showers and then start to see the activity continuing to clear out. loo

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it's starting out foggy in some spots. we have a dense fog advisory in effect for north bay valleys, as well as the delta. you can see it drifting around other parts of the bay area as well. with the dense fog, we go from having those showers over the weekend to patchy fog, and then along the coastline we'll have some dangerous surf conditions, with a beach hazard statement in effect today. then going into the middle of the week the rain will be back starting late tuesday night. as we take a look at some of our cameras around the bay area, you can see the low clouds in oakland, and we're also seeing some low clouds in dublin. but not yet meeting the roadway, but we are seeing very low visibility in parts of the north bay right now. novato, zero visibility at this point. if you're in that area, you have to drive through, make sure you allow extra time to get to work and maybe leave a few minutes earlier. as far as temperatures today, once that fog clears out, we're headed for the mi

first, let's get to kari hall. >> we have had the storms coming in.saw the rain yesterday, and also the gusty winds. that's creating big waves along the coastline. look at the wave heights we are currently getting, anywhere from 16 to 21 feet. the high surf warning will be in effect until tomorrow morning. on top of that, the water temperatures are cold so if anybody is caught up in one of the waves it can be a bit of a shocker of how cold that water is. the big waves are compiled by the astronomical pulls from the moon. we will see the dangerous breakers continue today as the storms off the coast continue to push big waves in. the next storm is on its way. it will bring us our next round of rain go into tomorrow evening, and also continue into the weekend. and the town of capitola is bracing for the next big storm surge, and for many what is especially concerning is the high and powerful serve that has already proven to be quite destructive, and right now today in the bay's thom jensen is live, and thom, workers are still repairing that wharf. are th

everyone is advised not to turn their backs on the water. >>> meteorologist kari hall is tracking today's conditions. how high are we talking about here, kari? >> we are seeing bigger waves coming up, some of those breakers, and most of the waves will be at about 10 feet or maybe a little higher. but a lot of the big waves have been targeting the pacific northwest due to the storm systems that have been pretty active there and churning up some of those bigger waves. maybe a little higher tomorrow as well early in the morning, but then we'll see that beach hazard statement expire by late tomorrow. we're going to see in some parts of the bay area some of these flags up. you want to know what they mean. the red flag means a high hazard, there may be strong rip currents, as well as some high surf. if you do see two red flags, that means that water will be closed to the public. so just a heads-up going there today, temperatures remain cool, after the fog clears out, we will have some sunshine, and our temperatures in the low 60s. we'll talk about when we could see rain in our forecast coming u

let's head over to meteorologist kari hall now for a check of the forecast. lots of people up and at it already, headed back to work, to the airport. >> back home. >>> so we are going to have a spare the air alert day. our air quality is a little more unhealthy than we like to see. there will be more clouds coming in and the rain returning tomorrow, with mild temperatures. by the end of the week into the weekend, we'll see off and on rain, with some breaks coming this weekend, if you're looking for opportunities to get outside. but, also, those storms off the coast will make our waves even more dangerous. we're already seeing rip currents and sneaker waves that come up a lot higher than some of the other waves. right now those waves are anywhere from 8 to 14 feet. that's really important because a lot more people during the holidays head to the coastline and you want to make sure you're never turning your back to the water. as far as temperatures, it's going to be in the low to mid-60s for parts of the peninsula, down to the south bay, while much of the east

meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect.t burns off before you start your commute. >> no, unless you're commuting after 10:00 a.m., then you have to deal with it in some spots. but it is patchy and it's not very widespread. so there are parts of the bay area where your commute is completely clear and we're seeing that in the east bay. but then for parts of the peninsula, the coastline and the north bay, very low visibility. but once it does clear out, we're headed for a sunny afternoon, mild days ahead for the rest of the week, and then for the weekend the rain will be coming back starting on saturday. but once again, these are the areas impacted by the dense fog advisory. we can see the gray shading there, which includes the valleys in the north bay, the delta, the bayshore, and then it comes through the tri-valley, down into the south bay, and then along the coastline. so we'll be watching out for that, some spots of visibility down to zero, other areas it's at a clear 10 miles. so we'll be tracking that for you as it kind

meteorologist kari hall is tracking the fog that we're seeing in the area. >> visibility is low in spots, so you're driving and it's okay. then suddenly you can barely see anything. so you want to be prepared for that as you're heading out and driving to work this morning, allowing some extra time to get there. yeah, dealing with that low visibility. around the bay area we are seeing cameras with low clouds, and other cameras it's just above the roadways. our temperatures in the 40s and 50s. in some spots, visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less. some of the worst of it in the north bay. now napa is at a quarter mile visibility. once it clears out around 9:00 to 10:00 this morning across the bay area, we're going back to sunshine and our temperatures reaching into the low to mid-60s. we'll talk about a few changes as we head into the weekend. >>> mike, what is going on in san jose? >> we have more than fog, low clouds in the background. these lights are jamming up because of two cars, two vehicles. let's look at the map. we're talking about northbound

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. where are we seeing the fog this morning? >> it's mainly the north bay and along the coastline as you're seeing in pacifica, visibility down to about half of a mile. it's not as thick as yesterday for much of the peninsula for that drive and parts of the bay shoreline. a little bit better than yesterday, and part of the reason why is we have some clouds overhead keeping the fog at the ground level from developing. so we're going to see the clouds due to rain starting to move closer by late morning, even the potential of some isolated heavy downpours, mainly for the north bay, as we approach the noon hour. that's going to be rolling across the bay area quickly as we go into this afternoon, clearing out this evening. we'll have another wave of rain in the forecast for tomorrow morning. i'll be tracking that for you. >>> mike, you were looking at a crash on highway 4. >> still tracking this crash. we're looking at the westbound commute direction coming out of antioch through pittsburg and toward bay point, just shy of bailey the

we'll check in with meteorologist kari hall in just a moment. but first, we want to get to nbc bay area's bob redell live for us in pacifica. bob, talk to us about how the waves are looking there. >> reporter: well, good morning, marcus and laura. this is not the worst we've seen it here along the pacific coastline in pacifica in years past, but we have definitely seen some decent-sized waves. ever so often you see a large one that comes in, nothing that has come over the seawall yet like we have seen before. we know that could happen. the san mateo county sheriff's office has just issued a warning. what they're doing is reiterating the warning issued earlier today by the national weather service, and that is they have a warning about beach hazards, not only for pacifica but for as far north as the north bay and as far south as big sur. forecasters are predicting that starting in just about an hour around noon there will be an increase of rip currents and sneaker waves along the coastline. you're advised not to go in the water, which we haven't

meteorologist kari hall is helping us track our way through all of this fog.y? >> it's going to start to clear out and we're going to see a sunny afternoon. where we do have fog, the temperatures are higher, that kind of acts as a blanket. right now in san mateo it's 54 degrees, but compare that to a clear vacaville where it is freezing right now. we're going to have a wide range in temperatures across the bay area. in morgan hill we'll see a partly cloudy sky by late morning, sunny for the afternoon, and headed for the low 60s here today. >>> mike, you're seeing the fog at the bay bridge? >> right around the bay bridge we're seeing fog kind of creep into our shot here. we're also seeing more cars waiting. the metering lights are typically turned on a few minutes before we take this shot and that's what happened this morning. there may be a slower run to the metering lights because of low visibility. b.a.r.t. has let us know they've slowed trains down because of misty conditions, which means potentially damp or wet tracks. we're watching for that. there will b

meteorologist kari hall is monitoring what we can expect weather-wise across the bay area. certainly a cold start to the morning. >> absolutely. take a look at some of these temperatures. a lot of us in the valleys are starting out in the 30s, even low 30s in vacaville. we are just above freezing in sonoma and santa rosa, and seeing some spots in the north bay also below freezing. as we take a live look outside in dublin, visibility is clear. we haven't had any issues with fog, but it is a cold start and you have to turn the heater on as you head out. we go from upper 30s to low 60s this afternoon. we'll see more weather like this over the next few days. >>> mike, you also have a couple of fires in your report. >> we do, nothing like the one ginger was reporting. these are roadside, typically warming fires we see near on and off-ramps. at mckee, no lanes impacted. also here northbound 880, as you're coming toward hayward, another roadside fire. all lanes open. the slowing is southbound, the build for your commute. here, unusual slowing in the tri-valley, southbound 680, app
