and now for a look at your national and regional weather, we check in with nbc meteorologist bill karins. did you have a nice weekend. >> beautiful. many areas of the country were gorgeous. a tropical storm off the east coast but there was a lot of beautiful wirth to be had. hopefully you enjoyed it. that tornado had winds of 140 miles per hour, an ef-3 on the fujita scale. what we are looking at on the radar is tropical storm alberta. little storm, very tiny, the cloud shield only extends 100 miles from the center, really no effects from the storm whatsoever even in jacksonville, florida, which is very close to the center of the storm because it's a very weak storm. just thunderstorms in the middle of it. it's more or less just a historical fact that formed so early, soes close to the east coast, only relevance it has. it's going to go off the eastern seaboard and dissipate. little effect if anyone for on the east coast, maybe enhanced rip current threat in georgia and florida today. we're still looking nice in many areas. cold front went through, numerous showers and thunderstorms and

karin caifa has the consumer watch today.rter: as school lets out, teens have more time to drive or learn how. the good news for parents, the insurance institute for highway safety says the number of teen drivers involved in deadly accidents has decreased. >> we've seen really dramatic reductions in teen fatal crash rates over the last 15 years or so and the biggest factor we think is new graduating laws. >> reporter: but 500 additional lives could be saved and almost 10,000 collisions averted if all states adopt five standards to make teens wait longer to get their licenses and place restrictions on new licenses including a minimum permit age of 16. at least 75 practice hours, a minimum license age of 17. a night driving restriction beginning at 8:00 p.m. and ban on teen passengers. regardless of the state iihs says parents need to carefully gauge whether their teen is ready to get behind the wheel. >> i think parents often don't understand how much power they have in this situation. they really make all the important licens

now for a lock at your national weather we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> probably bought one of those lotto tickets, just got a big gulp, twinkie. >> well deserved. >> yeah. congratulations to them. good morning, everyone. weekend forecast, this is as easy as it gets for me. we're not really looking at anything bad. we had no tornadoes again yesterday. we did have some nasty storms down in georgia and south carolina and north florida, but this is an area of the country that's in a drought so we actually needed the wet weather. and i tell you what, the middle of this may has been just very, very quiet. remember last year, about this time, was when we had the horrible storm go through joplin and now right here, only 71 tornadoes so far this month. typically in the month of may we get about 257. this is usually our peak month of the year for tornadoes. i don't see many this weekend, either. this is just a great setup. there's a dry air mass across the country. the humidity levels are very low out there. so enjoy it while it lasts. you know that summer is right around the cor
