nbc meteorologist bill karins g joins us. looking towards the weekend. >> a lot of people thinking about -- a lot of kids off school already for the week. exactly. and maybe adults too. let's talk about what happened in the northwest yesterday and overnight. we had the rain, bellingham had the most, almost two thirds of an inch, less than half an inch in seattle. a lot less around spokane. as far as the radar, light rain pretty much everywhere. we're socked in with it, almost the way through much of the pacific northwest, along i-5 too and the coastal sections get the highest amounts of rain today. that system is not moving to the south, though. there are clouds that will move in. you see enhancement off the california coast. temperatures are pretty mild in the southwest. filtered sun today, maybe kept down a little bit compared to yesterday. it is not cold, really, anywhere with the exception of the inner mountain west. light jacket and this afternoon you'll be all right with those clouds in the forecast, los angeles today,

meteorologist bill karins has the details. you guys are watching it closely. >> we had damage as you saw there but no injuries or fatalities from last night's severe weather. today is a much more dangerous day. we only had one tornado officially yesterday. we could have a dozen, two dozen today. we'll consider this our first severe weather outbreak of the spring season. already this evening, thunderstorms are rocking and rolling. three to four inches of rain across central missouri. flash flood warnings along i-70. 20,000 lightning strikes in this region alone over the last half hour. the midwest is the active area. in the yellow, a slight risk. strong storm, cold air behind it, warm, humid air out ahead of it. that area of red is the major concern. tornadoeses will be moving forward quickly as they form. those overnight tornadoes that are the most dangerous there. we watch these storms, you know, during the daylight hours. we can see them, we get more details. at night, it's more scarier. >> especially when you want more rest

. >>> bill karins now joining us now. so much weather to watch. that 1-2 punch. >> i got to tell you something really just fascinating, that will blow your mind today. this picture is making the rounds on social media. this is a door. this was found in starkville, mississippi, mississippi state university campus. the tornado that picked this door up and threw it on to the campus was 20 miles away. how incredible is that? 20 miles. it is how far away that debris landed. not just debris, a door. so 80 tornado reports is the final tally we had in last 24 hours. a couple of those were big and strong. tornadoes through mississippi and northern alabama. and unfortunately the same area will do it again today. not so bad right now. a little bit of a break in the region, but later on this afternoon, 76 million people from the great lakes to the southeast to the deep south under the threat of more tornadoes. and if you hear more stories of devastating tornadoes, likely it will occur in this red area from hattiesburg, tuscaloosa, birmingham, same areas that

the very latest from my colleague, karin giannone who joins us from pretoria. karin, perhaps one of the most explosively dramatic days in this trial so far. >> reporter: yes. we've been saying that till the end of yesterday the evidence was the most dramatic so far. today even more drama from the courtroom. oscar pistorius becoming hysterical and shouting back at prosecutor gerrie nel. because of what gerrie nel had put to him. and it really was the most dramatic moments of this day so far. because the court had to adjourn. oscar pistorius was let out of the courtroom. his sobs, his howls were heard along the corridor by journalists there. a recomposed oscar pistorius coming back in to resume his evidence a few minutes later. but now under, again, fierce cross-examination from gerrie nel. in a slightly less aggressive style but a very forensic style. very, very -- picking detail after detail. trying to get oscar pistorius to admit to a discrepancy between what he told the court about what had happened that night in an earlier statement and what he is saying now

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with more. what's going on?> chris, an early morning wake-up call for the st. louis area. they weren't expecting that. expectingen to thunderstorms, not a tornado. random on itself, did minor damage. someone ed said, it's going to be a long day in st. louis. a threat of severe weather all the way until midnight tonight. take you through you it and the rick area and threat. here's the tornado where it happened this morning near university city in missouri. that complex moved on. now getting a soaking rain, some embedded thunderstorms. not much severe potential now at least in the ohio valley. texas, one lone, strong thunderstorm. this one's producing large hail, gusting winds, crossing the red river between texas and oklahoma and heading for durant, texas. not a tornado threat, just large hail. take you into the situation. how is this setting up? very classic. this looks like a textbook case. warm, humid air coming up out of the gulf. cold, chilly air coming out of the rockies. it snowed hard overnight in colorad

so to explain sort of how all of this works, i want to bring in our nbc meteorologist bill karins with more. and just, when you see -- you hear the word tsunami, let's get something clear. the hawaiian islands are not being washed away, or not under the threat of being washed away, but they're calling it a tsunami advisory. explain, bill. >> well, even though hawaii is 12 hours away, by the time -- that's how long it would take the wave to travel. the first waves are expected to reach in the next 20 minutes. if it had been a big, huge tsunami wave, that would be moving into the whhawaiian islands. the one heading for hawaii, estimated one foot. if you're standing at the beach, you may not even notice it, but what you don't know that's happening is under the water, and the wave is going to mess with the currents and the rip currents. and that's why they want to be extra careful. they're telling people to stay out of the water until at least noon today in the hawaiian islands with that advisory. i mean, this was a huge one. this could have been so much worse. i mean, this was an 8.2 magn

joining me is bill karins. the south bracing for another day of severe weather. do we need to be concerned more about flooding, tornadoes? >> the flooding won't be as bad as what we saw this morning. we will see isolated tornadoes, but compared to the last three days and all the destruction that's been done, it won't be quite as bad today. it will be the least of the damage done. now, yesterday and then this morning it poured in pensacola. this was sent to me by a weather watcher. this is 24 1/2 inches of rain. can you imagine that? that's in 24 hours. that's why we're having this historic epic flow -- >> it's low-lying area. don't forget that. >> and we had on-shore flow, too. this is a picture at sunrise of downtown pensacola. all that water is not supposed to be there. that's about 2 to 3 feet of standing water in the downtown area. there's been many water rescues throughout the region overnight. this wasn't just isolated. it was from mobile all the way to panama city. all of those locations have had about half a foot to a foot of rain in the last 24 hours. it

and meteorologist bill karins is tracking the storms. this is a huge swath. >> yes, the same storm that is plaguing us this morning is the storm that was with us sunday and monday with the tornado outbreaks. we didn't have the fatalities this morning, but the damage, this is going to be worse, this flood event than the tornadoes. the damage in the pictures is probably hundreds if not thousands of homes with water in them. and these are the rainfall totals in the last 24 hours, and this gauge in pensacola stopped working when it was still pouring, so from 12 to 20 inches of rain widespread. they are saying in pensacola the damage they are looking at now is worse than with hurricane ivan, and that was almost like a direct hit in the area. we will wait and see by the time it is all done, and add it up, but it is impressive stuff. this is a picture of the downtown a area this morning, and again, the truck all of the way up to the windows, and three feet of water through the downtown area, and the bridges are washed out, and car cans all over
