let's get to nbc meteorologist bill karins. areas right now are feeling the worst of the storm? >> sound side flooding. the winds of really come down everywhere. there's no wind damage anymore but the sound side flooding. we have the radar source, the one that you just had up, i can show you the example of what sound side flooding is. it's when you get the winds coming on the back side of the storm from the west, usually you think of the storm surge and everything coming in from the east and that happened a little bit. as the storm pulls away, the winds are coming out of the west. we have the pamlico sounds that are huge areas. all of that water gets pushed out toward the outer banks, so that's been the worst flooding that we've seen and that's still ongoing. it's starting to get a little better as the winds die down but one report was that it went up 4 to 6 feet of water came in in 20 minutes as the eye went past. so that's pretty impressive stuff. as far as back to the other weather maps, the new update from the hurricane cen

here's bill karins with our morning forecast. >> the forecast in washington state was the worst. the carlton complex fire, four fires that all merged into one because of the windy conditions. it's right along the columbia river. what changed over the weekend, the fires peaked over the ridges. when the windy conditions rushed down towards the areas, that was where the evacuation center was, and they have to evacuate the evacuation center. as far as the forecast, notice the temperature still very hot at 90. the winds will be much lighter. instead of gusting to 30 to 40 miles per hour, the gusts will only be 10 to 20. the less windy conditions will really help the fire firefighters. our july rainfall totals, almost nothing in the northwest. almost nothing for much of the west, and that hasn't helped states. yesterday was about 87 in washington, which is one of the closest locations there no central washington. as far as the forecast for today, there's not a lot of change-ups. showers near reno. we will be cooler in the coastal we'll feel pretty warm in areas of the southwest. >> tha

i'm joined by meteorologist bill karins. good morning, bill. these lightning strikes are devastating. >> good reason why florida is known as the lightning capital of the world. usually they lead the u.s. easily as far as states with lightning fatalities. a lot of people outdoors and thunderstorms and no exception this year. let's look at this weather pattern as we head into the day today. we have a lot of hot weather across the country, especially in the intermountain west but we have a new storm to deal with in the northwest, brought some rain yesterday to portland area and it is going to be the wettest day in the northwest to areas of seattle included. we probably seen in the last two months. it's kind of a welcomed rainfall for the fire fighting efforts, but the interior heat continues from central and other portions of california all the way up through idaho. it's not going to change any time soon. as far as the rainfall goes, all of that green is a light soaking rain. this is beautiful stuff falling from the sky for all of the firefighters
