>> reporter: i tell you what, kasie. the crisis has passed, people in this community are still struggling. and quite frankly, they are struggling with trust. they have opinion been lied to time and again. they attribute many deaths to the mistrust and the mishandling of the issue from start to finish. so when they hear people talk about global warming and coastal erosion, it's kind of rings hollow to them because every single day they are wrestling with whether they can drink the water or not or they can put their children in this water or not. so it's much more nuanced in the way they engage in this issue. >> david, to that very point, how do you approach this with voters in trying to convey the severity of the crisis at hand with climate change while also acknowledging that, you know, there are many who either stand to have to take an economic hit from the changes that adjusting to climate change will bring or have more pressing environmental concerns that are affecting their day-to-day lives like the people of flint?

kasie, doug, and michael. so, doug, let me start with you.e the heated debate in the democratic party right now, which is there are times when you see the performance of him in the last 72 hours when you say are you guys really debating medicare for all in the public option right now when you've got that? >> right. >> like, how do you -- how do you do this? i don't think it's easy. >> well, i think -- and that's why for someone like joe biden, a moment like this is going to probably strengthen him because it's easy for him to say, look, like you may not necessarily agree with me on medicare for all or certain things i did in the past. but we've got an absolutely crazy person in the white house. >> the horse in the hospital. >> who is unstable, who is rambling and incoherent and is also deeply divisive. so the number one priority that we need to put forward as a party is to get him out of office. so at a moment like this, this is a good moment for joe biden, bad for the country, good for joe biden and some other -- i think you could also argue

kasie. >> ali in iowa for us. thank you very much.let me go to you here just quickly to kind of put a button on this. why do you think there was this evolution on the white supremacist question? she was much more direct about it? >> i think in many respect it's response to the president himself and his inability to emote emotion, quite frankly, to the american people, to the victims and families. i think also the tone he set in terms of el paso, this is not something that's happened overnight. this has been consistently happening over time. i think personally speaking coming from queens myself, knowing the president's background, red lining, race-baiting, central park five, many believe his father was actually a member of the ku klux klan at one point, all those things kind of lead towards his person has been nurtured in this way. he's very comfortable in saying things that met with the light by white supremacist. >> let's switch a little bit to politics. we have been talking last week about how divided democrats seemed on the debate

>> well, thanks, kasie.very important, is that we need to call it by its name. we have a domestic extremism problem in our country. there isn't anybody focussed on it in the government. programs have been defunded over the last few years. and even programs focussed on the far right. the first step is we need to ensure there is a mechanism in place to be able to investigate these crimes. i have to tell you there are days almost every week where i feel like my inbox is a risk assessment for homeland security and they're better suited for it than me. and the problem is that we are creating an environment where more of these attacks are happening, partly because of the internet. but also because we are not taking the steps to make sure this doesn't exist in our society. >> christian, so "the wall street journal" says 56% of americans think race relations have gotten worse under president trump. but you joined the movement decades ago, got out of it. you are trying to help people. what do we miss in this conversa

joining me now kasie hunt. kas, what is behind this here. moving forward with an impeachment inquiry which will continue to uncover the facts. what is behind this? >> couple things hallie. it is important to remember there was a split in nancy pelosi's leadership. she is definitely under pressure to move forward on impeachment inquiry. ben lujan is in her circle on the leadership team but he is running for senate in new mexico and facing a primary challenge and that, the person he is running against is running as a progressive and this has really turned into a litmus test for progressives. i think some of this can be explained by political circumstances and, you know, nancy pelosi has been very up front with her democratic members saying from a political perspective, you do what you have to do. you come out against me, you go right ahead. her interest is in protecting her majority and she realizes that different pieces of her majority have different demands from their own constituents. she has shown a willingness in the past to take the heat

i am joined by capitol hill correspondent kasie hunt. good to have you with us.ts here. they're talking guns virtually everywhere they can. realistically speaking where does all of this go and how does it translate into something changing in terms of legislation? >> or well, ayman, there is something to be said, i think, for keeping the public pressure -- or attempting to, anyway -- focused on this issue. if you have looked at how this has played out in the past at one of the tried and true tactics for the gun lobby has been to try and simply delay any action until the public has forgotten or moved on to the next news story. that's something obviously that gun reform, gun control advocates have struggled with all the way along. and one of the things that has been changing is those groups's presence on the scene. lawmakers attempting to keep up the pressure on this i think is part of that campaign. now, that said, steny hoyer is doing this. he is from maryland. it is not that far away. but everyone else is scattered into the wind in august. nancy pelosi has said a
