i'm kasie hunt in for chuck todd. at this hour, president biden is scheduled to huddle with his top public health advisers in the oval office. it comes as there are signs everywhere that the pandemic is not over. not only that, but there are signs that it could be surging again as millions remain unvaccinated. just look at some of the headlines across the country, sounding the alarm from florida to california, where l.a. is reimposing a mask mandate, the hypertransmissible delta variant now dominant in the u.s. is tearing through vulnerable community, in what cdc director dr. rochelle walensky today called a pandemic of the unvaccinated. cases across the country are well off of their highs, but they have nearly doubled from last week alone. if you look at the data from over the past two weeks, at least 41 states and washington, d.c. are seeing increases, with at least ten of them doubling their numbers in that time. vaccine administration has slowed to a crawl, as the white house battles a pandemic of misinformation.

walk us through what you've learned here. >> kasie, this is amazing.tutions are down. but look at this new polling about who we do trust. this is a gallop poll. look at the gap in how people feel about the police. a 45-point gap. republicans, 76% of them trust the police. democrats, barely in the double digits. a similar split on church. republicans way more likely to trust organized religion that democrats are. who do democrats trust? with president biden in the oval office, you have the biggest gap of anything in the survey on the presidency, 49-point gap, more democrats than republicans trusting the presidency. kasie, this one won't surprise you or your viewers a bit, double digits more of democrats trust the media. but this one surprised me. listen to this, twice as many democrats as republicans trust the public schools, still under 50% but a massive gap even now our public schools are a red and blue america. >> that's a remarkable and difficult number. how much of that do you think -- is it recent? is it about the way that we've seen school distri

we don't know where this legal road ends, more importantly, with whom or with what. >> kasie hunt, whene video and you were there that day, and there are so many people in the crowd who spent the 2020 election screaming about law and order and defending the blue. you look at the lies that have been spread over the six months. first it was the lie that these weren't trump supporters well, kevin mccarthy shot that down as they were screaming and swearing at the president on the day of the storming of the capitol, swearing to the president, how stupid did trump think he was, those were his supporters. then there was a lie that nothing dangerous happened that day. ron johnson said i had no reason to be concerned. the video proved that to be a lie. then there was the lie these were just regular tourists. and we saw the members of congress who said that was actually barricading himself with capitol police behind the entrance to the house chamber. and now these so-called defenders of police officers won't acknowledge them, won't talk to them, won't thank them. we've seen some capitol officers

kasie hunt has the next question. kasie. >> jen, it's good to see you this morning.ttee has reached out to the white house, to government authorities to ask for more information about it? >> i just don't have anything else to lay out for you, kasie. of course we are here to be a resource, i should say, to any entity, to private sector entities, to the rnc and others as needs arise, but the rnc put out a pretty clear statement yesterday and i don't have any other assessment from here to provide. >> let's go to mike barnicle for the next question, mike. >> there's a lot on the president's desk as everyone knows. what are the plans for dealing with dr. no, mitch mcconnell, because there really are no politics in potholes, but it seems he doesn't want to get anything done. is the president going to have him down for a sit down in the white house and drop the hammer on him or what? >> well, first, mike, if that's constructive, i'm sure the president would be happy to do that. they have known each other for a long time. they disagree on a lot of things as you alluded to. i

>> we're working very hard at that kasie.elerated. the program has a significant purpose but it wasn't designed to work in an emergency. it wasn't designed to work at those numbers in an emergency. but that's the process we're using because it also has a lot of healthy vetting involved in it. we want to make sure that we're actually getting the right people out of the country. so we're working at this very, very heard but you heard the president say of the couple thousand or so that reached the level of approval to be moved out of the country, less than half expressed an interest to move out of the country. so the demand signal hasn't reached a level we think we're in a crisis right now. that said, i don't want to leave any impression we aren't taking this seriously and aren't working hard at finding locations they can go, support while they're there, transportation to or from as well. this is something the entire government is working very hard at. >> admiral kirby thank you so much. great to talk to you. appreciate your tim

let's bring in correspondent kasie hunt.indor. kasie i'll start with you because i think about the conversations we were having on this show throughout this time but also milley making these remarks and what he must have been thinking on january 6th. >> i'm glad somebody was having this set of thoughts. i think back to "the washington post" story and an anonymous republican saying what's the harm in humoring trump as he was spreading lies about the election and urging his people to come to the capitol on january 6th. and milley clearly had the fore site and there's additional reporting in the book, too, that talks about some of the interactions between members of congress as well on this on the day of january 6th, including that confrontation between liz cheney and jim jordan and liz cheney making a phone call to milley. so i think that we should all be reassured that there are a few people at the top echelons of our government who recognize the depth of the threat and were willing to take steps to mitigate it. we know still

i am kasie hunt. you're watching msnbc. tropical storm elsa, the first named hurricane of the 2021 atlantic season is churning near cuba. a tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of the florida keys and parts of the gulf coast, and partly because of concerns over elsa. officials went ahead last night with the controlled demolition of the remaining portion of the champlain towers south condo building in surfside, florida. the structure unstable and a potential danger to work crews before the demolition. after the tower came down, search and rescue operations are now back under way. moments ago we learned from the mayor that the death toll from the condo collapse rose to 27 after three people were found dead in the rubble. there are still 118 people unaccounted for. miami-dade county vice chairman oliver gilbert spoke moments ago. >> we're going to work, we're going to pray and we're going to get through this together. and that's what we're doing. we're praying, we're working, and we're getting through this together. t
