i'm kate bolduan. thank you so much for joining us here for the next couple of hours. we are keeping an eye on capitol hill this hour and that's where lawmakers just heard from george floyd's brother. this hearing going right now on capitol hill. the house judiciary committee is holding a hearing on police practices and accountability. george floyd's death at the hands of a minneapolis police officer has very clearly and voubs obviously in a concrete way called for reforms to stop police brutality. some cities are moving to make some changes like that, like banning the use of choke holds, but no consensus on what to do on a national scale and they're talking about that today. manu raju is standing by. there is a powerful statement that just happened from george floyd's brother. what have you heard so far today? >> emotional testimony about exactly what philonise floyd witnessed when he saw the video of the death of his brother who was knelt on by a minneapolis police officer and emotion, choking up at

something like mine as well as just paste in like spreadsheets and day just to tell you which a voice kate bolduan is there really isn't that much of a right so i think she's winning savvy a community or 3 it seems that generally get left out today just. to let the fact that mona just fills in something that's just the bookstore. yet look you know in a world where which is bizarrely devaluing the truth. and the fact. it's beginning to become the norm which is terrifying. and that trump but now it's with speaker and it feels that trump is winning. so for people to come along and just say look here's the facts here's the truth. this isn't spun it's just it is what it is it's just so important. dates are very often replicates the systems of power the overunity just maybe they ignore them bisexual people maybe they ignore tiny religious and ethnic minorities and i think a big part of the future of state's journalism a big part of the future of fact checking is journalists going out and creating their own data sets and that's incredibly difficult to do it's incredibly expensive right now but that again

when outside armed forces go into communities no good comes of it and our correspondent kate bolduan is on days in new york city where police are trying to enforce that caffie it started as a peaceful protest but things have turned taking a turn for the worst we've seen some looting we've got a gentleman in custody over there the police are just showing up here in florida right now. as another night of chaos here in new york city. there are. barely there. were looting chase bank. down the street here. again a curfew is in effect right now. and we saw a group of about $20.00 to $30.00 break off. and there was a start of the booster who we were. and then the police are responding this is what we've seen all night groups of looters that are breaking off from the peaceful protests and then start some sort of looting and then within usually 5 minutes you see a huge police presence descend on the scene that's exactly what we're seeing right here right now. hoo let's take you now to portland oregon you're seeing these aerial pictures these are live pictures of what's happening on the street

i'm kate bolduan. we have been watching the hearing with top public health experts, top infectious disease experts talking about the current state of the fight against the coronavirus. and the current very troubling surge in spikes that are being seen and felt around the country. right there with dr. fauci, i think a very important message saying that he fears if things don't change that we could be looking at 100,000 positive cases, new infections every day. saying the country is going in the wrong direction. let me bring in cnn former analyst at the cdc dr. yazmine. i want to get your take on what you have heard today. >> so i remember dr. fauci's comments a month ago warning us if america didn't get the act together we would see death and suffering and what's panned out. as if the guidance is not heeded since february and march. we are seeing 12 states with increases in hospitalizations so not just increases in positive tests but actually people sick in hospital, arizona where deaths are increasing.
