let's switch live to katherine scott who is monitoring jesse hartnet's condition at pen presbyterian hospital. katherine? >> reporter: matt, we are told when the officer arrived at the hospital he was awake and alert and then he was taken into surgery. we are told his arm is in pretty bad shape, but the fact that he was able to survive this has a lot of people very grateful this morning. police commissioner richard ross stood outside pen presbyterian hospital early this morning, thankful being able to to say 18th district police officer jesse hartnet is able to survive after being shot multiple times in west philadelphia last night. >>> we are just lucky, that's all i can say, i can't believe he was able to survive this. >> reporter: the comigger said the officer -- commissioner said the officer has a lot of damage to the left arm. it is broken and stained nerve damage. >>> he has a lot of recovery ahead of him. >> reporter: the mayor rushed here when he heard the noise and joined jesse hartnet's father in the waiting room. he is grateful for the officer's service and sacrifice. >>> i

. >>> we have live team coverage, katherine scott is at pen presbyterian in university city. >>> first up we turn to annie mccormick in west philadelphia on what happened. >> reporter: they have just cleaned up the crime scene. the officer is from the 18 district in southwest philadelphia. the officer was in his patrol car after 11:30, when police say he was ambushed. an armed suspect using a 9-millimeter unloaded his weapon hitting the police officer three times, jesse hartnet was hit by an armed gunman at 18th and spruce. the officer a five year veteran was hit 3 times. the officer managed to return fire hitting the suspect. it was a short time later that police say they were ain't append the suspect -- able to append the suspect who was injured. they took the suspect to the hospital along with the officer. newly inducted police commissioner richard ross was at the hospital. here's what he had to say about a potential motive. >>> i can't find the words to explain how we feel about this, this was an ambush that makes no sense whatsoever. >> reporter: thrbled -- there should video that

katherine scott has just gotten to the scene the 300 block of st. mary street. let's go over to her and hear the latest. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam, that's right, three people were injured and one person suffered smoke inhalation. fire crews are on the scene in burlington city. you can see the smoke an flames where we are coming from the fire that started early this morning. let's go to video from chopper 6 hd that was over the scene. this fire broke out before 5:30 a.m. in the 300 block of st. mary street. firefighters arrived to heavy flames. they were blasting water at the blaze they continued to at this hour, the flames were fierce tearing through the roof of the homes. you can see smoke billowing into the air. major damage to the homes. it's too early to know the extent of it, because firefighters, of course, are trying to putt out the blaze. we don't know the cause of the fire. firefighters are working to get this extinguished at this time of day, three injuries we're hearing right now in the early-morning fire in burlington cit

"action news" reporter katherine scott is live where this all started in northeast philadelphia. e. >> reporter: matt, that's right, this car was stolen while the child was asleep in the back seat and that would already be a major concern for police but it turns out this little boy has asthma. his inhaler was at home and these temperatures this morning are bitter cold and police were worried about what would happen if this child was left outside or if too much time passed but let's go to video of the reunion between this little boy and his mother and step dad as an officer was carry -- carried that boy back unside the store in northeast philadelphia where this all began. this happened just before 2:30 this morning here at large and oxford. the child was asleep in the back seat of a honda civic in his pajamas and winter coat when this 30-year-old stepfather stopped at this 7-eleven and ran inside to make a purchase and he left the car engine running. that's when the suspect took the car and took off driving towards roosevelt boulevard. the car was found about a half hour later abou

"action news" reporter katherine scott is live outside dobson elementary in manayunk. reporter: matt, that's right, after two days of school the kids are heading back to class today and here outside dobson elementary you can see the sidewalks look pretty clear. there is a chunk of snow in spots but it's generally clear. we've seen them out treating the sidewalks this morning. obviously not all of the sidewalks in the neighborhood will be cleared 'cause people are stic still dig out. so it could be a messy commute for some kids. in manayunk ruse are still clearing. here's video of bobcats removing snow from some of the small south philadelphia side city. the city says more than 80 percent of city streets are now plowed. the city's 311 call center has received more than 25,000 calls since the storm started. while plows have been through most streets, last night some were still waiting for a plow on theirs. >> frustrating. >> we saw a bobcat right around the corner. >> i hope so. i hope it's coming soon. it would be nice to park instead of driving around for six hours. >>

katherine scott is live in north philadelphia at girard college with the details on the day's events. hi, katherine. >> reporter: hi, erin, yes, quiet now, but it won't be in a couple of hours when volunteers start to fill the floor including the mayor and the governor. you can see all the empty tables, they will be filled with people and projects, hundreds of different service project also, activities and workshops. five thousand people are expected at the girard college. this year is celebrating justice, economic, racial, criminal religious and environmental justice. there will be projects supporting military veterans, a job fare. the important thing here is getting involved and celebrating the legacy of martin luther king. there are people here of all different ages and background. this is the region's signature project. there's a lot of valuable work to do, but the hope is that the project sparks dialogue and gets them involved in their communities beyond today. >>> embracing his legacy, celebrating his life should certainly be done not just today, although this is the day that we

katherine scott is live today where the hearing will takes place in newtown square. >> reporter: matt charles robinson is accused of sexually assaulting a young family member. the victim is expected to here as well as robinson. he was a youth coach and affiliated with the boy boy scos and other organizations. police worry there could be other victims out there. >> reporter: 60-year-old charles robinson is accused of repeatedly molesting a young family member between 2010 and 2014. he faces a long list of charges. police did not reveal the victim's gender, but say the family member recently came forward with what happened starting around 1 years old. investigators say -- 134 years years -- 13 years old. >>> it worsened to the point where the defendant mr. robinson tried to get into the shower with the victim, tried to get in bed with the victim and progressed to the point where it was unbear only for the victim. >> reporter: neighbors say the family moved in just a few weeks ago, he owns another home in connecticut. he lives hear with his wife and has children. now investigators are tr
