kathy gaarde was 62-years-old. she lived in woodbridge virginia with her husband of 38 years. they had been together 43 years. doug told me kathy was a devoted daughter and took care of her aging mom. she also loved professional ice hockey. for years, they have season tickets to the washington capitols. she had a soft spot in her heart for animals. we feel it's essential to remember those whose lives have been taken, to remember the people they were. the lives that they lived. people who innocently went to work yesterday morning never to return again to their families. in their grief, douglas gaarde and his daughter jessica spoke to us about kathy. what do you want people to know about kathy? >> i guess what i want them to know most about her what a caring person she was, particularly how she cared about her family. some mentioned she took care of her mother who was living with us for ten years. she moved in when she was about 85 and lived here until she was 94. that's a lot to take on when you are a full-time mom and a full-time worker and she did a great job of that. in addit

anderson cooper spoke with family members of kathy gaarde with her 94-year-old grandmother who she cared for till last year. moving memories from her husband and daughter at the bottom of the hour. >> well, families of the sandy hook elementary school shooting, they're in the washington, d.c. area today. it was a trip planned some time ago but one that now has obviously new urgency since the shooting rampage at the navy yard. >> it has been nine months since the school shooting in connecticut when a gunman killed 26 people. the group of residents and relatives is called the newtown action alliance, and they're going to attend the stand your ground hearing today leaded by illinois senator dick durbin. >> alliance members also plan to meet with congressional leaders from both parties demanding man dapper to background checks and other measures to toughen gun control laws. >> and to canada now where the capital ottawa is the scene of a terrible, terrible accident. this is a passenger train slams into a double deckder city bus. and police say at least now six people are dead, 30 are injured.

kathy gaarde, 62, had been working in washington for 38 years. michael ridgell spent 17 years with the maryland state police before resigning in the year 2000 as a corporal. michael arnold designed ships at the navy yard. he was an avid pilot who was working on billing his own plane. sylvia frazier, who was 53, was the second youngest of seven children according to the "washington post." she worked at the naval seas systems command on network security. martin bodrog was a naval academy graduate. after two decades in the military he managed the design of ships for the navy. martin bodrog, you can see that smile on his face. he's remembered as a wonderful husband and the father of three daughters. an active community volunteer who taught sunday school. earlier i had the chance to speak with selma nunes. she worked closely with martin at fairfax young life community. i asked her how his family is doing. >> they're in good spirits. be they are lucky enough to have an amazing community both church community -- they've lived in northern virginia for a
