kron 4 meteorologist kathy trafton is here with the forecast and more on bad air quality. kathy. >> we're looking at that image from this morning. >> it doesn't surprise anybody that we have a spare the air alert in effect from the bay area, air quality management district, 10. it's for really of particulate matter. wood-burning smoke specially from the central valley. >> has been pushing in our direction courtesy of offshore winds. so the winds are blowing all of that smoke and pollution from the central valley right to us. so that's one of the big problems. also overnight tonight, we're going to have a really cool temperatures. some areas reaching toward freezing. so beware of that. if you're going to head into the into that area. but tomorrow will be hazy. no spare the air alert, though, for tomorrow because of the gusty winds. we'll be coming out of the north instead of out of the east. so the winds really kick up, especially in the mountains of the north bay and the east bay hills, santa cruz mountains. we'll get gusty winds and some sunshine now tomorrow morning to be

kathy trafton here now have forecast. sit and just right there on the building exit actually perfect. you know what we're seeing big changes in the weather right now. temperatures are running in the 50's and 60's. that's as many as 11 degrees cooler than they were yesterday at this hour. so we're seeing a drop in temperatures. also, we have pretty lousy air quality, but that's going to start to change because high pressure is going to move away. there's a series of storms moving in our direction. this area of high pressure scoots off to the east allows the jet stream to head right into california and then we get an increase in clouds and then we get an increase in rain. how much rain? well, tomorrow night, the raindrops for start to fall into thursday. that's light rain. and then we go through the weekend and we end up with almost 3 inches of rain from santa rosa. 2.7, 9 and also 3 point 0, one in boulder creek. many areas get an inch and a half of rain or so 2 inches in oakland and 1.9 in novato forecast lows overnight.

we're going to see what's going on right now with kathy trafton.t wind and temperatures a little bit warmer than normal. and really curative. >> quiet weather, tranquil weather. we've got temperatures very nice. the dense fog advisory is gone. course, it'll probably reinstated tomorrow morning because i think we're likely to see more dense fog again. sunset at 4.53, what could be wrong? we've got some storms out in the pacific so far. high pressure is in control and protecting us from the storms. but things are going to change. first of all saturday, it's a beginning official beginning of astronomical winter at one 20 in the morning. and that's when there's a big change in the upper atmosphere at all. the sun. we're gonna get some rain. so here's what's going to happen saturday. some very light rain, i think for us. and that really is the storm door opening and we'll see perhaps lighter rain yet on sunday. maybe little bit drier run this pretty much around sunrise each day through the week. just to give you an idea of what's in store for us is kind

kathy trafton joins us with a look ahead. hey kathy. yeah, so far it travels just fine. you don't have rain. so that's great news. >> and the sierras so far, so good. but that's all about to change. if you're heading. >> on the way out. okay. yeah. the roads dry right now on the golden gate bridge. but by tomorrow morning, it's going to be wet because the storm is heading in our direction. it is bringing some rain first to the north bay and then across the bay area in the sierra winter weather advisory goes into effect tonight and that continues all the way through friday at noon. very dangerous travel conditions up to the sierra for the next couple of days, primarily due to the wind at lake maybe 2 inches of snow but gusting to 50 miles per hour and in the highest peaks of the sierra. 15 inches of snow gusting to 100 miles per hour or so. very tricky to be traveling. concerns for downed trees and downed power at the water's edge of the pacific ocean. a brand-new surf concern. high surf advisory goes into effect tomorrow morning through sunday, 20 to 30 foot waves buffet

but across 4 meteorologist kathy trafton will have your holiday forecast now. county. >> is we have dry weather for today and into tonight. at least part of tonight. so on that score, merry christmas and happy hanukkah. but things are going to start to change. nice view from the berkeley hills looking toward the ocean and the changes are bringing some rain courtesy of this to pacific system. yet another one taking aim on the west coast, spreading some rain from seattle down to portland on eureka. and yes, late tonight, even to the north bay. it's kicking up the waves as well. yes, we've had high warnings and advisories. those expired is a brand-new high surf advisory going into effect tomorrow morning and continuing through sunday for 20 to 30 foot waves. very large. breaking waves could cause some localized erosion and of course, dangerous to swim, especially if you're inexperienced. so you might want to stay away from the rocks and the jetties. your weather headlines go like this. the rain returns to the north bay spread southward overnight and then we're goi

kron 4 meteorologist kathy trafton joins us now with the latest.storm that's coming. >> yeah, storm starts tonight. is the first in a series of storms that are going to move right across the bay area. >> finally, we get some rainfall. we haven't had raindrop really since about thanksgiving a couple days before. so we're due for some rain. we've been dealing with all kinds of terrible air quality. you can see right here. we have some clouds moving in, but also pretty moderate to lousy air quality. so the good news is the rain will get rid of the bad, bad pollutants and will have rain tonight starting around 10 o'clock moving through tomorrow morning and then lingering through part of the day. so it's a series of storms the most impactful storm rain comes in friday night into saturday and we will definitely see probably a bit of a break on sunday, but the concern for minor coastal flooding that is actually starts tomorrow actually, thursday morning into monday about 1 o'clock so that coastal flooding would be around the bay shoreline of the san franc

we're going to check in now with kathy trafton. she's in the weather center with an update on what's going we'll just see. we've settled into a beautiful pattern of above normal temperatures in the afternoon. >> chilly chilly temperatures in the morning and that's not going to change quite yet. still highs in the 60's for the most part, a few 50's today. so that's just a little cooler than yesterday. still, we have another frost advisory that's in effect for tomorrow morning expiring at 9 o'clock in the morning. and then things start to change because rain is in the forecast. arriving wednesday, maybe in the afternoon. more likely in the evening. it will be fairly quick pop of rain. >> but more rain is in the forecast for this weekend. so to be a very interesting week, temperatures right now 50's and 60's. so we've warmed up quite a bit since this morning's frosty cold temperatures. 55 in nevada. 58 per petaluma and 59 degrees in calietoga. so it's not a bad day. temperatures, as i mentioned, are quite a bit cooler down 10 degrees

let's check in first with kathy trafton for your weather. kathy. >> good morning, stephanie. we have quite a going on in bay area. it's moving across the bay area, especially strong and heavier in the north bay. it's also wind advisory in many parts of the bay area, not everywhere, not in the santa clara valley, but north. this is a view of the richmond bridge. it shows soggy, soggy lawn roadways there. and so it's kind of a tough drive. and it's good actually talk because of the winds will be kicking up. so today's highs, not remarkable numbers around 60, just a little bit warmer start to head south. it's the rain. that's the big concern and the winds. so the rain is mainly in the morning. this fund is a fast moving front. it's a moderate in the north bay and there's a flood watch in. the concern is in the north bay for the rapid rises of the creeks and streams and small rivers also concerned about urban flooding is possible, especially the low-lying areas, especially areas with poor drainage. and the problem is, of course, we haven't had this rain falling on saturated soil.

kathy trafton and she's got your forecast.john and i are forecasting. >> actually dry enough whether to walk our dogs today at the that's a good thing. we've got a series of storms. the ground is saturated and we certainly have more storms coming in our direction. >> a significant storm with widespread rainfall will be heading our way overnight tonight into tomorrow. so this is going to be quite the storm. it'll have a gusty winds and gust to 25 to 35 miles per hour in some of the ridges. and even in that 32 miles per hour or so, watch out for the wind and watch out for the rain because it is heading in our direction. area. rainfall totals. this is not just overnight. this is actually heading on through. so we're going to see as much as 3, 4 inches santa rosa and a lot more in some of the north bay hills at the water's edge. the high surf is kicking up. it is something else 30 to 40 foot waves. that's 40 around mavericks. and that's going to be causing all kinds of problems. and that continues through tomorrow at noon. also, t

let's check in now with kron 4 meteorologist kathy trafton. hey, hey, stephanie. it was a really interesting morning because the visibility was down to a quarter of a mile. and that's really one of the criteria. >> for issuing a dense fog advisory, it's really pretty this view from mount temple, pius. it looks as though kind of on a cloud looking at san francisco with some low clouds. be on that. and, you know, it's been spotty. so not everywhere is urban, dense fog. you may have woken up to sunshine. see nothing but sunshine. but if you get in the car and drive my goodness, you can hit really, really dense fog. and that does make for tough visibility. the advisory has been extended a couple of times now through 1 o'clock and it looks to me the public and allow that to expire. but it's really was a big problem for our 3 major airports because there were delays reported out of sfo, oakland and san jose. now that has actually cleared for san jose and oakland suppose looking clearer and clearer still, they're showing an hour. and 22 minute delay. i believe that that

kathy trafton in the weather center tracking the forecast morning. cathy. >> good morning, yes, we started out very, very wet indeed. and certainly we're drying things out this afternoon. it's going to be pretty dry. a few errant showers. a few stray showers but really it's going to be a wonderful afternoon. it's the calm before the storm. yes, another storm overnight tonight. here is the view of mount tam a pious. lot of gray up there and some wind in the trees. but overall, it's going to be nice. so we do get a bit of a break, but it doesn't last for long. that's the main message for today because another round of rain. the other message for today is the flooding concerns because of that rainfall that fell overnight into this morning. it fell on already saturated soils and already flooded swollen creeks and streams and has triggered a flood warning in effect for parts of sonoma county. and there's a high surf advisory that sunday until 4 o'clock in the morning. looking at the graphics, there's the area, the flood alerts that would be santa rosa cot

first with kathy trafton. hi, kathy. shape.iful, beautiful day. >> with lots of gray skies and some rain on the camera lens >> here is the golden gate bridge and you can see. >> yeah, we've got the raindrops. actually this is the bay bridge. i had the golden gate bridge up. but that's okay because we can switch to my source in just a minute. but it's going to be great. little bit more rain over this weekend. so it's rain tonight. it's rain, especially tomorrow and it will be high surf and then things will just turn around. so it's just beautiful in the meantime, we've got this light rain is mainly a north bay event, but we do see raindrops across the bay area and the high surf advisory, of course, will be kids continuing until this latest storm goes away because the latest storm will bring heavy rain that's tomorrow morning with some stronger wind and then by 04:00am the high surf advisory is gone and we'll see a big change just for the end of the year and into the early part of the brand new year. so here's with a high surf ad

let's let's check in kathy trafton to see what is going to look like the next couple days. capping. that is great video. that was not wasn't in the cards. that thing >> you know, beautiful out of the coast, but there are still concerns for the high waves. >> they've been 25 to 35 mile high feet high and the warning expires at 6 o'clock. but there's still concern for these dangerously high waves even as they start to relax just a little bit. we are still concerned because ours still rip current condition concerns. and also there's debris out there on the water. so if you don't want to swim in that because it is still pretty unsettled. here's a view post sunset still twilight's till dusk. this is the view from the berkeley hills. there are still some clouds in the sky, not everywhere, but certainly looking westward from the berkeley hills with a beautiful oranges and pinks, not so many clouds in the north bay. there's a chilly concerned and a frost advisory in effect for the parts of the north bay, some of those inland valleys because it is so cold. temperatures made it dipped as low

kathy trafton here to report. >> it's getting dark and cold the oh my what beautiful sunset. just a few minutes ago. >> a beautiful day. dry day. some sunshine, some clouds, even little bit of fog this morning. >> and there are changes in the air. here is that sunset. >> it's now happened and things are getting a little cooler and darker weather headlines. it is a spare the air day tomorrow a spare. the air alert has been issued by the bay area. air quality management district. i'm looking forward to periods of rain and wind and high surf in all that starts on saturday. strongest storms monday and tuesday and possibly again question mark late in the week. flooding concerns now, especially for the north bay quality today, moderate by tomorrow. it actually go into the poor category in some areas, including the north bay. so that's a problem until the rain comes because it come. it will thursday, dry friday dry and then saturday, light rain and then especially in the north bay sunday, light rain and then we'll start to see a bigger, stronger storm on monday and tuesday, bringing

kathy trafton joining us said this christmas eve evening to see whether it's being naughty or nice there i think mother nature's being pretty nice. it was kind of nnadi overnight. oh, my goodness gracious. it was rainy. it was stormy but clear out quickly. some areas saw awful lot of blue skies quite early in the morning. and still there was some clouds of vertical development and that did trigger some concerns about thunderstorms. but we managed to get through it, ok, now, here's the view from table. pius not clear here, and i just love the fact it looks as though we have some christmas trees sitting off in the fox. so it's beautiful. it's a perfect christmas eve for us because dry conditions, however, at the coastline, the concern is the continuing high surf. the advisory, actually the warning is in effect until 6 o'clock tonight because of the very high surf. even at this hour and the possibility of rip currents. and so this also some coastal flooding concerns. and so be careful as you head to the water's edge. also concerned about some flooding in north of the north bay and santa ros

let's get a check of the forecast now with kathy trafton. >>a beautiful dry evening and tomorrow will be dry as well. we have one more day. with dry weather. one more day to prepare for the holidays while it's dry. and of course, one more day to prepare for the storms that are coming. a beautiful view right now. us they're quality today. only moderate spera let the air alert goes into effect. that is one factor next. factors that dense fog mainly in the sacramento valley and the san joaquin valleys. but it spills into the delta and into the carquinez strait. so until 11 o'clock, quarter mile visibility is possible in those areas. high surf advisory has been issued now for saturday morning. 06:00am through sunday at 04:00pm high surf there and the weather headlines have a lot to do with the storms that start this weekend. periods of rain light to moderate for us. the biggest impact will be on the north bay weekend. rains will affect the soils and the creeks. in fact, we're going to be saturating the creeks were going to rise a little bit and

let's check in now with kathy trafton, the latest on our weather. hi, kathy.ots of cloud cover in some areas across the bay. this is the view from mount tam o pie. if you see lots of clouds. >> because of the cloud cover, some of the earth's heat was unable to radiate as away as much and that affected the fog formation. the dense fog advisory was canceled in 9 o'clock hour. this is a great day to travel. look at this. no delays reported at ak or sjc. on the other hand, our air quality isn't so great. and that's what high pressure will do. sometimes that access a bit of a lid. so moderate air quality across the north bay and the south bay and east bay and that that will all clear out once we get some rain for today, though, with tranquil weather slightly above normal temperatures. yeah, the air quality is so so. you go to the beach, there's a beach hazard statement continuing in effect until 6 o'clock tonight. the concern is sneak away to the concern is rip tides and then our attention turned to the periods of rain and high wind and high. sir, it all starts on

kathy trafton here with a look at forecast a body. good to know john. yeah, i drove through it too. it was foggy. was jpa had the windshield wipers going. so this morning, surprise, surprise. drizzle and fog got it. >> this afternoon, mostly cloudy skies. but the big storm because this is the calm before the storm. the big storm comes in overnight tonight into tomorrow and we have a series of storms off and on again throughout the entire week. good news for christmas day. we will see some dry conditions and that goes for hanukkah for the start of hanukkah. but the most impactful storm is the one that we're going to be facing in the next couple next couple days. so there's life-threatening conditions at the beach and the ocean and wednesday again is partly dry. coastal flood warning. you got it. and that goes through noon at tuesday. so the concern is we've got flooding at the beaches, flooding at the coast. concern for flooding in the nearby roads. even the infrastructure. and that's because we've got the big storm coming with high surf 30 to 35 foot waves. can you believe that you

kathy trafton joining with a look at that. good morning, kathleen. good morning. reyna mother nature does not disappoint. we have dry conditions today and dry conditions for the new year's and in-between overnight for new year's eve. >> it's going to be dry, beautiful view from mount tam up highest this morning. yes, there's a bit of a breeze, but there's a freeze warning in effect until 10 o'clock. and that is for the north bay, the north bay hills in north bay, valleys as protected in the valleys and also for parts of santa clara hills. also, some frost advisories, but it'll be dry. new year's eve dry new year's day. and that's what we want course. we have a chance of some increasing clouds. so that's not great. if you want to watch the fireworks, always a tricky forecast. got clouds. plus fireworks right? light to moderate rain. that's a possibility. certainly on wednesday, maybe some light rain maybe for the north bay, dry everywhere else across the bay area. but by friday, pretty good chance of some light to moderate rain. so we've got a great start to the ne

and kathy trafton is here to interpret what we're looking. >> well, it's beautiful weather. yeah. liked the gray skies. some areas are seeing blue skies. >> it all makes for a beautiful sunset 04:53am. tonight, the sun sets. here's a view from the berkeley hills as we start to say goodbye to the daylight hours. >> temperatures today not terribly warm, mainly in the 50's. we barely made it 51 in santa rosa. >> but 60%, carlos and 58 for cupertino. the air quality today, not so fabulous. moderate air quality in many spots. whether you're in the north bay and delay holder and concord, are you in san francisco? we're in the yellow zone there. so that's the thing. beach hazard statement in effect tonight until 6 o'clock and then is set to expire. the concern is sneaker waves coming with no warning across our beaches and possibly sweeping people into the ocean. not want that. also concern for rip currents. a series of storms is set to have our direction. first on saturday. just light rain, especially concentrated more on the north bay. then the south bay, second storm, very light again.

and we have meteorologist kathy trafton in the weather center with details on what's going on with the farc. and the fog and the low clouds of stratus. it's all mixing out slowly. so many areas where sunday was other still seeing some gray skies. but >> it is certainly a beautiful day after a really rough start with all that fog now recalling it mostly sunny. warm in print in that will print the seasonal because it's going to be warm warmer than normal, but not really hot temperatures in the 50's and 60's this afternoon with light winds. so beautiful day at the beach. beautiful. but hazardous is beach hazard statement in effect that is for sneaker waves and rip currents. and that's a big concern tonight at 6 o'clock through tomorrow night at 6 o'clock, there will be periods of rain starting on saturday. so today and tomorrow we're in pretty good shape, even on friday. but then saturday starts to get rainy. it'll be on again off again. rain and wind throughout the holiday week. now, here's the beach hazard concern. and that really is because we have this north to northwest swell coming

meteorologist kathy trafton with us to talk about the storm that's approaching. yeah, you know, right now that it's pretty hazy, there is no spare the air alert in effect. however, we have moderate to poor air quality across the bay area. you can take a look right here. the golden gate bridge on you can make it out. but it's not easy because of all the haze. so north bay, east bay coastal south bay, all 4 to moderate air quality. we're going to forget about that soon enough because rain this heading in our direction impacted arrives late tonight around 10 o'clock. it starts to move southward across the bay area. and by tomorrow morning, we'll have pretty good rainfall, but it will start to clear out just a little bit more impactful. rain comes friday night into saturday. so it'll be a series of rain systems coming through again, one again on monday. but the concern one of the concerns is for minor coastal flooding along the bay shoreline. that's the san francisco bay shoreline, san pablo bay shoreline. that was in effect for tomorrow thursday into monday and haza
