. >>> good evening, i'm katie phang, in for joy reid. we begin with the rise and fall of matt gaetz. today the house ethic's committee revealed it found substantial evidence that the former republican congressman had sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017. and that he regularly paid women for sex while he was in congress. the 42-page report concluded that the committee, quote, determined there is substantial evidence that representative gaetz violated house rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory a perks, impermissible gifts, obstruction of congress. committee investigators said they tracked 12 different women from 2017 to 2020. the committee concluded that most of the payments were likely connected to sexual activity and/or drug use. gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrong doing. and on monday, in a series of posts on x, he denied paying for sex. earlier this morning, gaetz filed a lawsuit, seeking to get federal court to block the ethic's committee from releasing the damning report. he has also noted that th

katie: when trump and senator j.d. is so many officials and journalists were saying there is no evidence to support it, they kept talking about reports they heard from television in trump's case, or from constituents in the ohio senator's case. they basically said that is enough of a basis for us to make this claim. but people make reports to police and other agencies all the time. and that just prompts an investigation. that does not mean something actually happened. trump and vance were circulating screenshots of allegations and police calls that were about geese, not people's pets, that were later taken back by the people who made them that terrible -- that told journalists they regretted it. j.d. vance even acknowledged that these reports were false. when they turned out to be empty, he kept defending the lie anyway, saying he could do that to bring attention to springfield's immigration experience. so when you asked what separates a live from a false claim, we only use the word lie once a year for lie of the year.

and so i don't give this bromance much time, katie. the difference is elon musk, who's not elected to anything, who's not appointed to anything through through a confirmation process, is basically calling the shots and was calling the shots. last week, he came out first to scuttle this bipartisan deal that led to a tremendous amount of chaos. and you have the speaker of the house himself acknowledging that he was continuously talking to elon musk throughout this whole process. who is elon musk but an unelected billionaire who has his own interests with his budget and who obviously, as a result of those interests, decided to scuttle a deal that would somehow shock of all shocks impact his business in china, among other things. and so, look, this is trump reminding people and reminding musk, i think that he's paying attention. so very clearly this is getting to trump. and i'm glad i'm going to sit back as i keep saying, and drink my martini and watch this chaos unfold, because this is what the republicans asked for, and they're getting i

i'm katy tur. the house ethics report into former congressman and trump's one-time pick for attorney general, matt gaetz, is going to come out after all. two sources familiar tell nbc news the ethics committee secretly voted to publicly release the finding of the year's long investigation into gaetz' alleged sexual misconduct and drug use. a reversal from the panel's deadlock over putting it out last month's when gaetz was trump's choice. he has since resigned from congress, which makes this move from the committee even more interesting. the math suggests at least some republicans ultimately sided with democrats on the matter, on that vote, so why? and is that report bad enough, and it's a big if, that the justice department could reconsider reopening the case? in a statement getting ahead of the report itself, matt gaetz is going on the record and he says, quote, my 30s were an era of working very hard and playing hard too. it's embarrassing, though not criminal that i probably partied, womanized,

thank you, kati.ight, we are also learning new information about what may have caused a passenger plane to fall from the sky and burst into flames in kazakhstan. it's a country that neighbors russia and isn't far from ukraine. the flight took off from azerbaijan headed for a city in southwestern russia. it did not make it. a u.s. official tells cbs news there are preliminary indications that a russian anti-aircraft system may have hit the plane, which was carrying 67 people. 38 of them died. cbs's chris livesay reports on the evidence investigators are now looking at. >> reporter: new footage shows holes in an azerbaijan airline fuselage, suggesting shrapnel, and not a flock of birds, brought down the passenger jet yesterday. >> the most likely hypothesis we see is that it was struck by an air defense missile, almost certainly russian, in the area over grozny. >> reporter: azerbaijan airlines flight 8243 left baku for grozny, russia. due to dense fog, the passenger jet was diverted towards the caspian
