about this day in boston,et's go to katie who has made her way up there. katie, as i understand it, there's 15 blocks that are virtually frozen. adds anne mentioned, people have been told to shelter in place and once they do go out avoid crowds, which is pretty tricky on this day, which is a holiday every year. >> reporter: it's pretty tricky in this area. this is the back bay of boston, a popular area. it is a busy area on a normal day. it is chaotic during the marathon in a good way. it's celebratory. the bars are open, people are out. they want to see what's going on. i guess they're trying not to congregate but for the most part it's pretty quiet in this area. right after the explosion there were streams of people walking the streets. the subways were shut down and since that -- because of that, people had to walk for miles in some cases, to their destination. in fact we're two blocks away from the finish line, two blocks from where those explosions happened. in fact we saw one woman stumbling to this block with shrapnel wounds. nbc has confirmed that s

abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has much more on the developments in the next half hour. >> from concord, contra costa county, a school district is looking for a new superintendent and our media partner, the condition con times -- "contra costa times" reported to release the school superintendent and the general counsel. the two had contracts on the job until next june. board members stated in the past they wanted a change in leadership because of low morale and a lack of public trust in the district. in contra costa county, antioch police arrested a juvenile who admitted to calling in three bomb threats. two were made to deer valley high school and the other to black diamond middle school. police identified the suspect and took him into custody. deer valley was the victim of four other bomb threats there week. antioch high school received one on wednesday. the threats are under investigation. >> two sisters is been accused of abusing chin at a daycare center. family members say the two sisters, 35 and 32 are both pregnant. the two sisters made the first court appearance yesterday. they

katie marzullo has the latest from the newsroom. >> this is surprising. the chief had been pushing for the tasers not for the entire force but for about 70 officers specially trained in crisis intervention. this morning, the "san francisco chronicle" is reporting the chief is taking his proposal off the table. he says after taking public suggestions under advisement and changing the policy for how the tasers could be used, usage was so restrictive the less lethal weapons were no longer viable and tells the chronicle that officer would give so much pause to "if" they should use the taser it would put them and the public at more risk. at a hearing in august an expert on taser induced heart failure outlined why there should be restrictions based on weight and able. >> distance between the chest wall account heart is much smaller in a thin person and elderly person and children. you want to avoid tasers a young person. >> the chief said another restriction was if the suspect was too close to traffic. the chief proposed the tasers in july after police shot and

as 11-year-old recovers in a boston hospital, ktvu's katie has more on what people here at home is doing>> hern is being treated for a leg injury. he was cheering for his mother along the sidelines and it's that same love of family that inspired a fundraiser for his recovery efforts. >> we watched their kids grow up. they've watched our kids grow up. their daughter is always playing at our house with my daughters. you know, they are like family. >> nicole is a professional photographer who lives next door to aaron hern. she wanted to use her talents to help the family. yesterday, along with other photographers, she offered photo sessions. >> you don't want any family to go through what their family is going through. so this is a way we can contribute and it was an easy way to contribute. >> while the group kept busy yesterday with photo session. aaron hern and his family remained in boston where he is being treated for leg injuries. he is expected to make a full recovery and friends hope it's a speedy one. >> just really overjoyed and happy for him that he has been able to meet michelle

nbc reporter katie davis has the very latest. >> reporter: boston's back bay neighborhood remains onnight as investigators try to figure out who was responsible for the deadly explosions here. nbc news has confirmed one of the two people killed was an 8-year-old child. it was a chaotic scene in boston as two explosives simultaneously detonated near the finish line of the marathon. counterterrorism officials tell nbc news that multiple explosive devices were found at the scene. they were timed to detonate at the height of the marathon, as large crowds gathered near the finish line. >> these explosions occurred 50 to 100 yards apart. and each scene resulted in multiple casualties. >> reporter: cameras were rolling as the explosions erupted near the main grandstand where spectators had gathered. >> there was one right at the finish line. it was just this huge pile of smoke. and then it sounded like a huge cannon went off. and then another one just happened right across from us. and it was just a huge explosion. and there was just debris everywhere. >> reporter: the remaining runners wer

rancho calaveras home called his parents before discovering his nine-year-old sister has been fatally stabbed. katie with the coroner this morning and has more on the search for the killer. >> reporter: claudine, the coroner confirmed for us the young victim died of stab wounds but he couldn't say how many times she had been stabbed. he said she should be able to release her identity by this afternoon. the fatal stabbing happened in the rural community of rancho calaveras. many investigators remain on scene working the case overnight. they're trying to catch the young girl's killer. we're still working to reach them this morning. it all started yesterday when a 12-year-old boy discovered an intruder in his home on rapone road. a sacramento television station is reporting the boy called his parents, who then called 911. the man he ran into then took off, and that's when the boy made a terrifying discovery. his nine-year-old sister had been gravely stabbed. >> we're doing a house-to-house search, and in some cases, we're searching extensively into attics and storage sheds. >> deputies say the girl was

we are learning more tonight about tamerlan tsarnaev's widow, katie russell. she has said through her attorneys she had no idea what her husband was allegedly planning. that she is shocked and devastated now. people who know katie are speaking out. we are joined from north kingstown road, rhode island. you're in the town where cath erin russell's family lives. what are you finding out about what she is like? >> reporter: well, anderson, earlier today, we went to the honey dew doughnut shop where catherine worked. and i spoke to her boss and he told me she was very dependable, very likeable, good with the money and like a daughter to him. i also talked to one of her co-workers there, robin aldrich and she said katie is getting an unfair shake from the media and from the town. this is what she had to say to me earlier. what are people saying? >> just -- saying that she doesn't have a mind of her own, and that she is a terrorist's wife. and, okay. i don't know. she married the wrong person. or -- i don't think his actions should, you know, be taken out on her. >> what el
