why are they doing this now, beyond fireworks and zingers and katie porter giving a beat-down, what'sheir companies? >> reporter: the immediate trigger for this hearing, stephanie, was that undercover video over the summer of an exxon executive cynically describing how the company undermined efforts through lobbying to address climate change. democrats wanted to hold this hearing for a long time, pining for the chance to drag these ceos before cameras, put them under oath and try to get them to admit their companies knew decades ago that the product they sell, fossil fuels, was contributing to global warming, and that they hid that fact from the public. of course, these ceos have no intention of admitting that under oath. a spokesman saying "our public statements about climate change are and have been truthful, fact-based, transparent and consistent with the use of broad scientific community." one key theme to watch is how house democrats want to draw comparison to big tobacco, they want to make this a moment like that 1994 hearing where the tobacco executives testified that they didn

alex can't congresswoman katie porter, who has a really national figure at this point, she is going toxactly what happened. this was. federal land where that oil was coming from, and so it will be a federal investigation. she also thinks this could be a way to increase the conversation about banning offshore drilling around the country. here's some of what she told me. we will be conducting a thorough investigation, and the federal investigators are already on site doing that, um, collecting information beginning to investigate and that part of it will take time. but we will absolutely hold the responsible party accountable. at the meantime, the focus is really on making sure that we're cleaning up the spill as quickly and as safely as we can. this spill has put our wildlife at risk. or health at risk. it's bad for our economy, obviously, and so there's a lot of focus right now on doing the response at the same time. i want everyone to be assured that there is going to be accountability for why this happened. so we'll talk more with her on the issue is we also talk with michael knowles

investigations of the committee on natural resources, the gentlelady from california, representative katie porter. the speaker pro tempore: the gentlewoman from california is recognized. ms. porter: thank you very much, chairwoman maloney, for recognizing me. i rise today in support of h.r. 1170, which will designate the post office located at 1 league in irvine, california, as the tuskegee airman lieutenant colonel robert j. friend memorial post office building. i introduced this bill to honor the legacy of a true orange county hero, lieutenant colonel robert j. friend. before passing away in june of 2019, lieutenant colonel friend was one of the last surviving tuskegee airmen who took to the first african-american military aviators. the roughly 1,000 tuskegee airmen flew 15,000 combat sorties, destroyed 260 enemy aircraft, and received 150 decorations of the flying cross and legion of merit, fighting the nazi luftwaffe while simultaneously striking a blow against racism back home. lieutenant colonel friend flew fighter aircraft for nearly two years during the war. during his 142 combat missions
