nbc 10's katy zachry has more on how that's affecting our area. katy?s not something crews want to hear or drivers. so, we started by taking this concern to penndot. they cover thousands of miles of road in pennsylvania. it turns out, they will be paying more for salt this winter. $6 more a ton. and that quickly adds up when you consider the department uses tens of thousands of tons of salt any given winter. the good news is, this spike in price will not affect penndot until 2015, when the current salt contract expires. and when they do have to pay more for salt, they tell me they will have the money budgeted. >> yes, it is an increase in the cost that we're paying, but obviously, it's the cost of doing business and we need to have that material to keep the roads passable for our citizens. >> now, in addition to prepping for the winer penndot is in the middle of a major construction season, but a few big projects are going to have to wait until the winter is over. they include street road in bucks county and ridge avenue in philadelphia. >>> now your nb

nbc 10's katie zachry is live on the scene. what have police told you, katie? >> reporter: well, police are telling me that this couple and their two sons who live at the end of this block are understandably shaken. they were winding down for the night getting ready for bed when this group of armed men broke into their home. police say the men were all wearing masks that covered their face as well as dark clothing. it happened last night just after -- just around 10:15, rather. the men had handguns and a shotgun when they broke in through a back basement door on the 100 block of lafayette street. the men found the homeowners in the basement. that man and woman were held against their will while the group of armed men ransacked the rest of the house. the couple's two sons were upstairs, also held at gunpoint. the men ran from the house. they have not been found yet and that is what concerns police the most. >> our biggest threat is we have four active on the street, three handguns and a shotgun that we need to find. >> reporter: and i'm trying to get more inform

nbc10's katy zachry is live. hi, katy. >> reporter: hi, vai. through the morning, we've been talking to investigators, they tell me a man died in this fire that broke out at the assisted living facility. i'll tell you how firefighters worked to get an employee to safety. coming up after the break. >>> new from overnight, we're learning more about a fire an an is sifted living facility in delaware county that left one person dead and another injured. nbc10's katy zachry is live near the scene in middletown township, katy. >> reporter: rosemary, the fire chief tells me on the way here they were worried because they learned that it was in a building where people lived at the elwyn institute, a facility that caters to physical and mental disabilities. firefighters were side by side with state police who responded to help staff to safety, many of them older and not able to get out of the building themselves. one man in his 60s or 70s, i'm told, died from injuries he received in the fire. a security guard and another employee suffered minor injuries.

first, katy zachry is watching traffic. good morning, katy. >> good morning, bill. you said it's been a chilly start. it has also been a slow start to the morning for drivers on 76 eastbound headed into philadelphia. and this is why. there's been a lot of backup associated with a disabled tractor-trailer that was on the shoulder right near conshohocken, but there was a fuel spill. so, that spill went into the right-hand lane. they had to reduce traffic down to one lane. and as an effect, we had it backuped up for several miles. fortunately, it has been cleared in just the last few minutes, so traffic is still getting by, but as you can see, residual delays, about 14 miles per hour headed into that scene. and even speeds are in the 30s after that headed into center city, philadelphia. watching an accident in west conshohocken. this is conshohocken state road right at marion hill lane. that came in about a half hour ago. also, 78 up in the lehigh valley at lehigh street looking good, free and clear of any problems up in the lehigh valley. 22 and 309 have looked good a

good morning, katy. >> hi, bill. unfortunately, for new jersey drivers, we have a development to that crash on the turnpike southbound. so, between two exits, exit 4 and exit 2, they are blocked off while crews investigate this overturned truck that's blocking all lanes. it happened just before 4:00 a.m. right near route 322, which is exit 2. but right now, again, crews have between exit 4 and exit 2 new jersey turnpike southbound off limits to traffic. so, an alternate is you can take route 73 northbound to i-295 southbound. that will get you around that mess. it is affecting drive times, because right now we're not even totaling any drive time from 322 to the delaware memorial bridge, because again, that stretch is off limits to traffic. but the turnpike in pennsylvania, that's moving fine, as is 476. no issues to report there. and taking a look right now at the platt bridge, where traffic is running free and clear in both directions, the ben, the betsy and the walt look good as well. >>> 5:32 now. and new from ove
