today the reaction and today the leading gop candidate has granted an interview to msnbc's katy tur who was just back from trump tower in midtown manhattan. katy, having seen your conversation a few moments ago, i think we can say that his tone has changed a little. >> it's a drastically different donald trump than the one i interviewed back in july. even the different donald trump we have been seeing on the campaign trail. he's said that he would do things differently if he had the opportunity to do so. that he would be less pc but did say that he would be himself. that he's going to continue to be himself and it would be a lot of work for him to be politically correct. but just the way that he was answering questions, the way that he was engaging on hillary clinton on bernie sanders. he was refusing to attack people personally in this interview. and that was a marked difference from how he spoke to me in just a few months ago. very interesting interview. >> so listen for these differences along with us as you listen to this conversation. we'll be back on the other side of this, but he

>> i don't think i'll do much different. >> katy tur is joining me from just outside trump tower in new york. katy, what else did you draw from this interview? >> reporter: it was just such a different interview than the first time i sat down with him, andrea. that one was so combative. he was so defensive about a lot of things. and this one, he seemed much more at ease with the idea that he's the front-runner for the republican nomination for the office of president of the united states. to have him say that he would do things differently, that he would try to be more pc, even a little bit, is so surprising. i haven't heard him say anything of that nature. he's never said that he has any regrets. so that was really interesting. we also asked him about ben carson, he's doing pretty well in the polls. the fox news latest poll saying he's 23 to trump's 24. and that's within the margin of error. i asked trump what he thinks about that and he says he wishes ben carson would attack him so he could attack ben carson. of course, ben carson is refusing to attack anybody. so it will be interesti

katy tur is here with us in new york. ty, you thought you saw a bit of a different side of donald trump today. >> it was a kinder, gentler donald trump, still very much donald trump, but we did talk to him about the debate as well as carson. take a look. he'll say it better than i ever can. 119 days on the trail so far. what have you learned about the american public? >> that they're really, really smart. they get it. they don't believe what they read because they read so many false stories. i'm not only talking about myself. i'm talking about generally. the american public gets it. and we have tremendous crowds. we have tremendous love. they know what i want to do. and it's actually more important even than the press. i used to think the press -- the press is very important and you have some amazing people in the press but also some dishonest people. but the american public gets it. they're really smart. >> would you do anything differently? >> i can't really say i would. certainly i guess if you think back, sure i would

joining me, nbc's katy tur who is following the trump campaign.ok at south carolina, it's an interesting development there, especially when it comes to evangelicals which we would think someone like ben carson would have a better lock on. >> he does have a good lock on evangelicals but when i have spoken to evangelical voters and evangelical leaders, in both south carolina and in iowa, they said about donald trump that they think he's speaking very bluntly and directly to them. i asked he's divorced, he used to support abortion, he seems to go contrary to a lot of things you guys hold very dearly and they said well, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and that speaks a lot to the attitude of voters right now. they feel like the politicians that are in office are not their friend, they are their enemy and donald trump will eradicate them. >> the interview you had with donald trump, he seemed to present a softer side, a little more p.c. donald trump. but it didn't stop him from going after bernie sanders, who he may see as a new rival in virginia. ta

so nbc's katy tur joining us from man chest.ians coming through but trump firing up this crowd in good and bad ways for those interested in him. you spoke to him and he had something really interesting specifically about bernie sanders to say. >> reporter: we asked him specifically, excuse me, about bernie sanders and what he thought about him sharing stages by some ways at this no labels event and said he did agree coming to trade deals. bernie sanders says the trade deals are horrific. listening to bernie sanders is quite interesting talking about the real unemployment rate much higher than the rate released about 4.5% and sounds like donald trump speaking about that. same thing goes with trade as i just said and about things like unemployment. i'm sorry. i'm blanking on the other one and interesting to see bernie sanders here. did get a warmer reception when they took the video link stage, if you will, from the crowd and speaking about the proposals, the crowd only had a scattered applau applause. similar reaction in that way

let's go to katy tur who is out there with the campaign. e you were in iowa, you noticed they suddenly looked like a presidential campaign. gathering names and trying to make sure the people that show up become precinct captains the next time they come to iowa. are you seeing the same set-up today? >> they seem to be continuing that at this event here in burlington, iowa. they say they have volunteers going into the crowd and explaining to them, how they should go about caucusing. we haven't seen the same posters we saw in waterloo, but this is a bigger event. they do tell me now they have caucus leaders in all 99 counties, but that they're really focusing on 1,700 precincts. chuck, there's a man on staff named chuck laud ner, nicknamed chuck the truck, famous for getting rick santorum roobed the state in 2012. santorum won this state probably because he was able to get to all 99 counties. i will say one thing about this crowd. it's an older crowd, the type of crowd that would attend a caucus, less the type of carbon dioxide that are just co

katy tur is covering the trump campaign. she joins us live from atkinson, new hampshire. quite a morning there. >> good morning. sorry, my mike was unplugged. quite a morning. most of the talking points that donald trump did give this morning, though, were many of the things he has said in the past. a couple things to note. one was that he was talking about how he came up in this business, how he made all his money. he told the crowd he took a small million dollar loan from his father. matt lauer stopped him and said, hold on a second. small million dollar loan doesn't make a lot of sense to a lot of regular folks out there. that's getting a lot of play online. but donald trump said that in relation to the rest of his wealth, a million dollars really isn't that much. he's very proud of all that he's been able to do. now, on the subject of immigration, there was a woman in the crowd named maureen who asked if he could give detailed plans, clarify his position on exactly how he would get the undocumented immigrants out of this country. and here's what he had to say. >> worl

. >> nbc's katy tur is at the no labels summit in manchester, new hampshire. what did voters hear from the candidates today? >> this is a no labels conference. it might as well be the let's get along and we are hearing compromise and promises to reach across the aisle. from the republican and democratic presidential con tnders we've seen here, it's been their same talking points. this time they are throwing in words like compromise. we haven't heard complete explanation or promises on how they are going to do that. so far though we heard from jim webb, lindsey graham, chris christie, bernie sanders and donald trump. many thought it was unexpected for him to show up to an event like this. he hasn't been known as somebody to reach across the aisle. he said he would be able to do it. many think he is more devisive and contentious. he did come here and answered questions from the crowd. he stuck to his talking points and moved on. it is notable that all the presidential candidates were invited to speak here. hillary clinton did not accept. she is in las vegas gett
