schools chancellor, kaya henderson was joined by mayor vincent gray inside the wilson building to mr. deuce the program. it lays out spending and planning decisions through 2017. last week, dcps announced a $10 million grant program for schools with a large group of students in need of academic help. take a look at the outline of the 5.5-year plan. they want to increase math and reading level and improve the proficiency rates for the lowest schools and insure that 90% of dcps students like the school they attend and also increase enrollment. >> because while every child will benefit, those children that will benefit most are those children who are in the most socially and economically challenging circumstances. and unfortunately, are disadvantaged substantially by the time they get to school. >> they're ambitious. but we know that we have to be aggressive and urgent if we're going to insure that our young people are ready for college, career and life. >> now, they're also looking at something that might make any students listening or watching right now cringe. extending the school day

we created something called the human resources subcabinet when i was in office to try to do what kaya is saying. we also noticed in addition to the issues that you described, that the world and trucks is having terrible impact on our kids, too. because we had a lot of young people whose parents were being incarcerated. they would then go to grandma or two and somebody, and they would never round picks we didn't have as high as 70%, but on any year at least 33% of our middle school students were moving from one school to another. the other issue that came out was a need for some common curriculum, so that when they moved from one school to the other they wouldn't be dramatically behind. they may not be in the same week, but basically the same types of issues were being discussed school by school, and that would help. >> i think, change gears a little bit. i think that one thing that helped improve dropout rates and -- got the other issue you mention. >> talking about the unity. >> one of the things that are work on -- [inaudible] research has found that basically integrated schools --
