this is the main road into keaton beach. behind me you can see the sheriff.esponders heading into this beach and checking to see for any survivors. they are trying right now to see if -- who decided to ride it out and whether they are okay. we are told to hang back for a few moments while the first responders are able to do their job. i can tell you that earlier this morning, when we were in perry, there was extremely powerful winds, well over 100 miles an hour. that was 20 miles inland. you can only imagine just how powerful the wind gusts must have been here at the beach where this powerful storm idalia first made landfall. we are still learning -- we are trying to learn the full extent of the damage here in keaton beach. this was where that eye first made landfall a little earlier this morning. we are hoping to get behind this roadblock. some residents have been trying to come in. this is that main road. driving in here was very difficult. a short time ago, it was impassable as first responders were cutting through downed trees, trying to be the first ones

imagine how strong the winds were here in keaton beach.rying to do some rescues being launched right here. if you walk over here, you can see how many first responders are now here. the florida national guard is on the move. they just arrived and let us into this area, which had been previously blocked off. they're just trying to get a handle right now on just how significant this damage was. and chris, this is the gulf of mexico right here. you can see all this water just came in here, this massive symptom surge just not sure exactly how many feet ended up here in keaton beach, all these roads were blocked off. they just finished clearing off this main one. we were driving in from perry. we saw a collapsed gas station here on the way. we saw downed power lines. it was extremely difficult to get here, but that process now is underway, the process of clearing off these roads, getting here in order to search for any survivors and to assess really the damage. i think it's a testament, chris, to exactly how incredible some of these buildings a

it made landfall this morning near keaton beach. let's bring in andy baier.raving the hurricane from inside his hotel in florida. andy, thank you for joining us. how are you doing and how is it looking there? >> good morning, how do you do? it's a little gnarly here. i think we'll be okay. i've been in and outdoors for the last hour or so and it doesn't look like the surge is coming up -- hasn't moved in about an hour from what i can see. >> bret: that's good news. they had predictions about the storm in cedar key. what they were projecting above a certain number of feet and it could be over the entire area there. you are just not seeing that as of yet. >> well, no, i haven't, no, i haven't. the power went off about 5:00 and i've been up since about then. i've watched the water come up but -- walked down the street and saw there was about a line on one of the measuring polls about nine feet of surge, which is what we had back in hermine, which was pretty bad deal. but i can't imagine if it goes much higher than that. >> bret: how does your hotel survive, the

we were here live as the eye came on shore, keaton beach.e have been reinforcing this last few days, wind you can hide from it, you have to run from water. talking about 15 to 16 foot storm surge, that is catastrophic damage. purple here is coldest cloud tops with thunderstorms and we have strongest core of wind right now, 100 mile per hour sustained wind for matter of hours and we have extreme wind warning for counties as backside comes ashore and threat of tropical tornados. several storms within the last 12 to 24 hours, tornado watch from tampa toward charleston will continue as the storm moves north and eastward. cedar key 6.5 feet surpasses hermine and cedar key is going to continue to rise because we have high tide yet to come. historic storm, again, storm surge over topping homes, inundating communities and it could take lives. keaton beach florida wind gust 83 mile per hour, certainly see those storm tropical storm force winds and storm moves north and eastward, quick moving, into georgia and south carolina. category two hurricane in

take a look at what it to to this beach house in keaton beach, florida.eye of the storm came onshore, the roof of the house completely ripped off. it's as though you are looking at a blueprint almost. let's bring back meteorologist chad myers, between the flooding and the tornado risks, can you walk us through the biggest worries tonight? >> this thing still has a tremendous amount of tropical moisture. doesn't have tropical wind characteristics with it anymore, i know that so 70, i haven't been able to find a gust over 75 but you know what, we are still going to see the potential for tornadoes as the storms come onshore but there is the potential still today. all of the storms coming onshore could be rotating so you need to keep your radio, your phone on, make sure you know what's going on locally. >> thank you so much. let's go live to gulfport, florida where we find carlos suarez, the water where you are, appears to be receding. tell us what you are seeing on the ground there? >> reporter: so we are in gulfport, that's in pinal is county, where most of

the concern in this area in keaton beach was water damage.t was actually the wind that wiped this house off the map. you can see that wall that's knocked over has a tv still mounted on it. another wall has a mattress leaning up against it. we're also seeing people come and survey the damage themselves for the first time. they did the right thing and got out of here when the storm was moving through. we know now from talking to neighbors that the roof from this home was actually taken all the way across the street and the neighbors on the other side of the street have seen their roof ripped off of one of the sides as well. actually if we can show you there, frank, that is part of their roof that's wrapped around the power pole showing you how forceful the winds were here. in other parts of the state it was the floodwaters that got into buildings like businesses and homes, miraculously florida governor ron desantis says there have been no deaths reported. listen. >> evacuations and listening really to the local officials. i think those official

keaton beach.communities like horseshoe beach and cedar key. it's too early to have an accurate assessment of how much surge occurred there because we don't have the communication but all indications are it was the once in a lifetime event. this hurricane, now a tropical storm, making its way into georgia, north into south carolina will also brush up against north carolina. how dangerous is it now? >> it's a really good question. this red area that you see behind me is where we think the heaviest rainfall and flood from rainfall is going to occur over the next several hours. probably in south carolina, it's already starting to occur and we end up losing a lot of people in these situations because they think that the downgrade to, from a hurricane to a tropical storm means that the risk has lessened but in this case, in these areas, the risk is really high. this is a good night not to be driving about. when the sun goes down, you won't be able to see flooded roads. a really good night to stay inside

the storm hit florida keaton beach, on the states gulf coast as a dangerous category. 3 storm, it has since been downgraded wind speeds approaching 200 kilometers per hour recorded in coastal areas. authorities had ordered the population to evacuate ahead of the storms arriving mass you can purchase the is a major ologist and as spoke to him from the city of perry, which lies in the sold off. yeah, we, interestingly enough, if you look at a side, it's actually sunny. believe it or not, it was a very quick getting hurricane sometimes. yeah. the smaller storms that are very tightly coiled, tightly packed, that doesn't mean or less severe. it just means the wins are really wrapped up right near the center that aren't that bad, farther away. so this morning we woke up to drop this room conditions, winds guessing to about 6570 kilometers per hour. it wasn't that bad. and then suddenly the i will all the strong ring of wins around the middle of the store. on the, i quickly had given gust between a $120.00 and a 150 kilometers per hour. we had torn a to like board as easily swinging through

keaton beach area. and then the strongest core, the back side of the storm will move on shore.o, that's going to be imminent, happening right now. i'm sure we will get the official data from the national hurricane center and, again, that is just the lowest point of pressure as it comes on shore and i believe it was at 947 but we will get that information. overnight category 4 storm downgraded a little bit to a category 3. the results are still the same. the storm surge is still going to be catastrophic. 16 feet over this very vulnerable coast line is going to cause, you know, it's going to change the coast line of this area very rim reminiscent of iaf you went through michael across the panhandle a couple of years ago, it's going to be kind of the same catastrophic damage. this is the latest storm surge by the way. so look at cedar key approaching 6 feet right now. where i believe we have robert ray and we are looking at cedar key the florida storm surge trend it's obviously peaking right now and depends on when high tide is. some coming in now. then you have feet of storm surg

and look at this storm damage in keaton beach, also in the big bend area, the eye of idalia came ashorehortly before 8:00 this morning. this home has been ripped apart. the entire roof in front of the structure are gone. debris scattered all across the yard. the city of st. petersburg shared this video with us saying it rescued more than 75 people so far. more searches are still under way. the national weather service also reported water rescues under way in parts of georgia today. we are, of course, learning about the tragic first deaths from this storm. two people who were killed in weather-related traffic accidents in florida this morning. idalia right now is barreling toward savannah, georgia, with the center of the storm 60 miles away. that's where we find ryan young, the calm before the storm. ryan, how have conditions changed there as idalia is inching closer and closer to you? >> reporter: yeah, jake, this community has been on high alert. it is a coastal town. they're aware of how dangerous a hurricane can be. we have been watching the water all day. they're worried about the w

grady troubling keaton beach where idalia made landfall. what does it look like now?reporter: not good. there's a lot of cleanup to do here and some homes have been wiped off the map entirely. we want to get an update florida governor ron desantis in the next few minutes and the fema administrator. they will tour the damage. this is some of what they will see if they come to an area like this. this home you can see the roof, the walls are gone. if you look closely you see the tv on that wall that was knocked over. a mattress propped up against another wall that was knocked over. we spoke with one of the neighbors here who told us that the roof of that house and landed all the way over here on another house. they were worried about flooding here but turned out it was the wind that did the most damage. flooding was a big problem in some other communities like cedar key and steinhatchee. we have video of steinhatchee where he saw county sheriff's department officials driving around in high water vehicles, coast guard planes flying overhead, florida fish and wildlife offi

grady trimble with fox business is live in hard hit keaton beach which is west of gainesville.ndfall. grady, good morning. >> good morning, rachel. and florida governor ron desantis as well as the administrator of fema will tour the damage today and when they do, they will see scenes like this all over the big bend region of florida. this area, keaton beach, where the storm made landfall was really concerned about storm surge yesterday. when the storm actually moved through 24 hours ago, the biggest issue in this neighborhood was wind damage. you can see this roof came off of this house and fell into what looks like the neighbor's pool. there are other houses that have similar damage in the area as well. where flooding was a problem was in stein hatchy, florida. so he you that video high water vehicles from the terrell county sheriff's office driving around. we also saw florida fish and wildlife. state law enforcement officials and coast guard officials making their rounds throughout the look for anyone that might need to be rescued. did not find anyone that we're aware of that

>> neil, we're in keaton beach where this hurricane made landfall just before 8:00 a.m.e behind me, the damage is extensive. it's wind damage primarily to these homes here. you can see this roof from this yellow house here toppled all the way in to the swimming pool down below just extremely serious damage to this home. a lot of the houses i should point out in this neighborhood are on stilts. they primarily held up from the flood waters. in fact, one of the people that lives in this neighborhood told me that the flood waters, they were only up to about their knee. so a lot lower than expected. as we walk through the neighborhood and there's debris strewn throughout, you can see the extent of the damage. you can't even tell where these pieces of furniture, where these pieces of housing looks like another part of a roof used to be. this is a couch. i want to swing around this way here. you can see this house essentially wiped off of the map. the lower floor is still standing. the upper floor destroyed. s that a mattress in the back. that was somebody's bedroom wiped out.
