my brother keeper, these are the works of our very distinguished panel. each of our guests has produced important work about the issues facing black men in high poverty communities. to be sure, what we're talking about today is not the condition or status of all black men. as professor patterson has shown, the influence and contributions of african american men far exceed what you might expect based on their percentage in the population. and we have our twice-elected president of the united states to show the extent to which black men succeed in our country. but as today's headlines make clear, there are very serious problems. policing, violence unemployment, poor schools all , are significant components of black life in america. and they are also too significant facts of american life. to discuss these issues, issues which aei is focused upon, we have a great group of scholars. first, we have professor orlando patterson. professor patterson is the john cole professor of sociology at harvard. he is the author of numerous papers and five major academic wor

the president launched my brother's keeper. what it is is an initiative to address these persistent opportunity gap that are faced by boys and young men of color and make sure that all young people and communities can reach their full potential. and we are looking at a trade -- cradle to college and career strategy. we are laser focused on evidence-based interventions. before i took this job, i ran something called the social innovation fund, launched in 2009 to really prove and prove and scale evidence based interventions. i think when they were looking for someone to run this, they were looking for someone who had that appreciation. one in eight nonprofits in this country spend zero on research and valuation. 52% don't have a change model. need is up resources for these organizations are down, we have to change the way we think and realize that good is not good enough. for those of us who have been in business and now philanthropy, we go completely to heart and lose our head. we keep artificially sustaining these organization

there's the my brother's keeper community challenge. there are now nearly 200 mayors and county executives that have accepted that challenge. within 180 days, they are convening their community in a very public way and developing local action plans for how they're going to reduce december despairties. mayor nutter was the first to release his plan which will include trying to reduce juvenile arrests. mayor ballard in indianapolis was the second to release a plan. they're looking at doing harlem children's own style block-by-block work. they have foundation funding to support the executive director for three years. so i'm really excited about that. there's been all sorts of ngos helping these communities. we have webinars and tool kits. it's really create thd great momentum. lastly, there's been a great private sector response. i was just with the ce of of ubs this morning. we are hearing this this is hugely important that their bottom line, fixing out how to get this right. so there's been over $300 million in investments between fill l

i think it's important first to look at my brother's keeper and the context of many other things thatesident has been doing over the last six years. whether it has to do with what we do about our criminal justice system taking a look at the relationship between local law enforcement and people in their communities, looking at things we can do to help young men of color, especially avoid situations in which they will end up in the criminal justice system, or they will be victims of violence. it's really a very broad approach through our economic policies and our educational policies and our criminal justice policies. this is just one aspect of it but it's an important aspect, because what makes mbk particularly eweunique, chris, it's a community-based approach and we have been going across the country as you noted listening to what young folks have to say. >> does america put too many young men in prison? >> i don't think there's any question that we have way too many -- far too many young men who are in the criminal justice system who are otherwise disconnected from their communities

we were talking about the my brother's keeper initiative tomorrow. of course a lot of years, many of them in baltimore, wondering if he might talk about them. >> reporter: well, white house officials just confirmed moments ago that president obama will in fact address baltimore tomorrow when he speaks at that event about my brother's keeper but he's also going to focus on the broader issues, broad eer challenges facing young african-american and the responsibility that the community bears in helping to solve some of those challenges. of course we heard president obama address baltimore on friday. he stressed the importance of letting the legal process play out. he stressed the importance of getting to the legal truth of exactly what happened. and he called on the protesters to continue to protest in a non-violent way. so i do anticipate we will hear from president obama tomorrow about baltimore. i don't think he's going to make any news. i would suspect he will reiterate some of those broader themes that we have heard from him so far. >> a friday muc
