what have you learned, keir?porter: betty, this hasn't been confirmed by nbc news, but we can tell you what's become reported. we are -- we are hearing that the egyptian army saying that parts of ms-804 debris has been found. it says that the debris includes passengers' by longings. this is a report being told to egyptian state tv it seems. egyptian navy finds passengers' belongings and debris from the plane. now a note of caution. we heard yesterday that the egyptians thought that wreckage from the plane had been found. and then the greeks clarified that in fact on closer inspection that had not turned out to be debris from the plane. so again, nbc news has not confirmed the reports but in egypt it is being reported that debris and passengers' belongings have been found during this search of the mediterranean as they try to find the plane that took off from here in paris and went down about 30 minutes before it was supposed to land in cairo. >> i know the information is still coming in, but does it specify at al

keir, back to you. >> all right.tell us what the reaction is there. because people will be just hearing the news, the worrying news that this may have been caused by an explosion. >> reporter: that's right, keir. first, let's talk about what tsa is doing. you can see we're in the international terminal. it is normal security presence here. we've spoken with tsa. they say they have no mans to beef up security at this point. until they know exactly what caused that explosion, as we're now hearing, they won't know if any changes need to be made in the u.s. security system. so right now, it is business as usual at u.s. airports. this is brad in chicago on his way to munich. we're now hearing it was in fact an explosion that brought down this egyptair plane. how does that make you feel about flying? >> it's somewhat disconcerting. the news about airline failures orca tastfys is camp famplifiede fact they're so rare. it's not a flight originated in the united states. it really hasn't changed my feelings about flying. >> re

keir simmons live at charles de gaulle airport. keir, thank you. kerry sanders is in washington with more on the investigation into egyptair 804 and also on the plane. keir just used the word jigsaw as we are learning more and more, if there is in fact debris, that is probably going to give us the best information if they can see anything on those pieces of debris obviously. >> of course. and among the pieces of debris that is sort of the piece of gold here, if there's one piece of the puzzle, it's this. it's known as the black box. it has the flight data recorder information in here and the conversations of the pilot, co-pilot, and their transmissions. also what they might be talking about in the cockpit. if the area where they found this debris floating off the island of karpathos is the area where most of this debris showered down, the depth is 1 to 2 miles down. that's not inaccessible are remotely operated vehicles. by it's very difficult to find something of this size in an area of we don't know how large it is. we do know the timeline of the

keir, thanks very much. as keir points out, nbc news has not confirmed that ap report. egyptair on its website, they put out a statement earlier saying it denied any misleading information regarding the reasons of the disappearance of ms 804. the company confirms that the reason of this disappearance hasn't yet been confirmed. bill, what are you hearing from egyptian officials? right now this is considered a greek rescue operation. >> reporter: yes, good afternoon, thomas. obviously whenever a plane disappeared from radar without any distress call, the specter of terrorism is raised. all the more so when it is an egyptian plane and coming from paris. egypt and paris seem to be in a nexsus of terrorism we've seen. the greek transport minister did say that terrorism was perhaps a more likely explanation for this than mechanical failure. but as ever, the egyptians are being extremely cautious about any early interpretation of debris that's been found, of a path that the plane might have taken. as keir said, it veered, it twisted and then it developed like a stone. that cou

i want to bring in keir simmons who is here with me in paris. keir, we started talking about the question could something have happened here that caused that plane to go down. >> right. >> talk a little about the investigation that's going along at the stops along the way. >> you know, what happened here will be a question probably whatever they defined happened to the plane. if it was a bomb, and you've made clear we don't know that for sure, but if it was, then they'll want to know how it got on board that plane and the first place they'll look will be here. if it was a mechanical failure, they'll be wanting to look at what happened here, the repairs, the servicing of the airplane. remember, airbus is not far away from us so the spotlight will come back here, pretty much whatever scenario plays out, i guess, unless it was some kind of crew failure that caused the crash, in which case, of course, they egyptair employees. the focus then would go back to cairo. but we know something about where the plane went during the period before it took off

the white house can't say definitively what happened to the plane, but as nbc keir simmons reports the families are starting to get some information. >> relatives of those on board have been gathered here at charles de gaulle airport. we have been watching as french government officials and ministers have arrived to give them information before the information is released. what we now know is american intelligence officials believe or suspect there was an explosion in the area where this plane disappeared. we know from the egyptians they think it is more likely this was terrorism related. if that is the case, it will put the spotlight back on this airport with the question of how an explosion happened. was it caused by a bomb? how could the airline. the search for the aircraft continues. reports from the wreckage have been found are now discounted by greek officials. it is crucial it is found and particularly, of course, the black boxes from that plane in those will be answers to all of these questions. back to you. >> keir simmons, thank you. >>> investigators are trying to figure out

keir simmons, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. french president in the past half hour, confirming that the plane crashed. devastating news for the families of those on board, who have been waiting here at this hotel. and now the mystery over what happened to it over the mediterranean, mui- answers. a plane that left the paris airport last night on a routine flight. family members of passengers have been gathering at charles de gaulle airport and at the crisis center in cairo. praying for the best, fearing the worst. egypt ms-804 took off from paris at 5:09 last night headed to cairo when it went missing, suddenly lost from radar at 8:45 near the border of greek and egyptian air space. it was to have arrived in cairo at 9:15 pm. airbus 320, flying 15,000 feet when it went missing. on board, 66 passengers, including one child and two infants. personnel and cabin crew. airbus confirms the loss of the flight and goes to all of those affected. with egyptian and french, as well as ten other nationalities. no americans were on board. the

keir simmons is with me here in paris. ayman mohyeldin is in cairo where the plane was headed, and tom costello is keeping a close track of the investigation from there in washington. keir, there was just an evacuation here at charles de gaulle in terminal one. what can you tell us? >> some dramatic moments. the terminal one evacuated for a period of time. people pulled out. not knowing what it was. as you see so often with an evacuation. when it's in this kind of situation where a plane took off just days earlier and then dropped into the mediterranean, it frightens people all the more. it turned out to be a suitcase that was left. police checked it out. it turned out to be nothing. it shows how much tension there is. >> suspicious package. let's talk about the investigation. at this point it looks like perhaps some debris was found. yesterday there was also that false alarm. they thought some debris had been found. does it appear to be different? >> we have been cautious about it because of the reports yesterday that tur

>> and keir, as we know right now this is a greek investigation, with the u.s. military resources available, as well. but out of an abundance of caution, the french parliament went ahead with the move to expand their security measures that have been in place now for the next two months, correct? >> reporter: yeah, that is correct, in fact, the french minister describing it as an ad hoc coalition. we don't think that that changed the extension of the emergency situation here was connected to what happened. we think that was going to happen anyway. they are looking at a soccer tournament coming down the line in the next months in france, and the protection. the french intelligence, the intelligence across europe and the u.s. will be looking at every aspect of this. the passenger manifests, where the aircraft was before it was here in paris. the security procedures that are in place here at this airport. and they will be very, very keen to understand what went wrong as everybody is, because of course, it has implications for the future. we know already that it was

keir simmons joins me live. let's start with that evacuation that happened in terminal one. was that in reaction to yesterday. >> when we've seen across the u.s. an increasing of security, l.a.x. for example, meeting to think about security there and here we saw passengers evacuated from terminal 1 very quickly when they believed that there was a suspect package. it's the kind of thing you see regularly at many, many airports, but it's a sign too of how anxious they are here. >> after the attacks here in november, we heard that a number of employees here had their badges taken. what more can you tell us about that? >> they knew that airports would be a target. we know that. we know that al qaeda has targeted airports. we know that isis wants to do that. we saw that in brussels so they have gone through security here. they did remove security passes from many, many employees that they were worried about. that said, the french foreign minister is saying that there is absolutely no indication here so far that this is related to terrorism. they will be holding their breath, thou

let's go to keir simmons at charles de gaulle airport in paris where the egyptair flight took off. what's the latest you've learned there? >> reporter: i'm just reading a release by the greeks and you'll know of course that the plane took off from here and flew across europe, across greek air space before it entered egyptian air space and disappeared. the greek authorities releasing a time line of what happened. saying that at 2:24 local time, a flight path was established. they then say at 2:48 and i'm just reading this, the flight was transferred to the next -- to another area and was cleared to exit greek air space. the pilot was thanked in greek and then at 3:27 a.m., the greek area, the athens area control center tried to communicate for transfer of communication and despite repetitive calls, the flight did not respond. and then the air traffic controller called on the emergency frequency without response. it looks as if from this that they were trying to hand over two egyptian air space at the point of which the flight disappeared. we know it was trite on that boundary betwee

andrew. >> keir, thank you for the report.rsation with an aviation expert right now. anthony roman the founder and ceo of roman and associates a global investigation firm. you hear the news. you hear about the swerving now. perhaps no distress signal. do we use the "t" word, terrorism? >> i don't think we can say that right now. it has to be in the mix. we have to consider it, but there is some precedent for an aircraft behaving like this, particularly the a-320. an american airlines flight out of jfk was lost with all hands after takeoff due to rudder sensitivity. the same thing happened to an a-320 at air asia, it received numerous warnings of rudder problems. the co-pilot mismanaged the problem, the aircraft stalled, pitched up, went to the right, went to the left and then all hands were lost on the aircraft. so there seems to be some issues with the rudder on this aircraft. whether or not it's been corrected since that time remains a question. or whether or not the pilots were issued new instructions on how to manage the r
