joining me now from moscow is nbc news chief international correspondent keir simmons. so keir, this news that he's going to speak, it's 10:00 there. when do we expect this to happen? >> reporter: we don't know, katy, and we don't know what he's going to say. dmitry peskov, the spokesperson for the kremlin said he will make a series of important announcements. we can speculate on it what it will be, but it's incredibly hard to predict the turn of events here in moscow. i do think that president putin will have felt that he needed to say something, the kremlin releasing a video of him giving a speech to young russian engineers today that did not in any way address the rebellion that rocked russia over the weekend. may even have been recorded before the weekend. so that kind of silence, if you like, from russia's president, couldn't go on much longer, especially after that dramatic, 11-minute piece of audio from yevgeny prigozhin, the leader of the wagner group who led the rebellion group through the weekend despite the fact that he had allegedly been kind of sent off to b

over the weekend, we're joined now live from moscow by nbc news chief international correspondent keir simmonsone of those dramatic days, the kremlin clearly trying to re-establish more traditional optics of presidential power, so to russian media reporting president putin as we speak standing in front of 2,500 russian security forces who helped to push back on that rebellion over the weekend and telling them that -- saying to them, president putin, you helped to avert a civil war. late into the night last night president putin meeting with senior security officials including the head of the national guard, the head of the fsb, and defense minister shoigu, who, of course, yevgeny prigozhin was trying to unseat, so a peszmessage in those optic putin showing he still has the same team around him, including the defense minister, and then that stunning 10:00 p.m. speech last night by president putin, in which he didn't once mention yevgeny prigozhin, the held of the wagner group, by name. but furiously railed against what he described as a mutiny attempt at bloodshed, as crime. so that big opt cal

now for reaction from moscow, let's bring in nbc news senior international correspondent keir simmons, keir, putin delivered this speech in moscow's cathedral square where guards once held coronations. tell us more about his message and any sign at all he's considering a shake-up of military leadership. >> reporter: i don't think there is any sign he's considering a shake-up of those around him. i think what we really are learning now in the aftermath of all this is that this was less a rebellion, less an uprising and more the lid coming off the rivalries between the people around president putin and then the urgent efforts over a number of days to put the lidback on. what you're describing there, president putin, for example, standing and talking to his security services inside the walls of the kremlin just this morning, i think that is an effort to reassure the russian public that the kremlin is in control, that president putin has the power there in that speech. he was praising those security services, as you mentioned, saying they hope to avoid a civil war, had a minute silence fo

our own keir simmons, nbc's chief international correspondent is in russia with an inside look at what is going on. keir, the first question, the biggest one is where is vladimir putin? >> reporter: we don't know, katy, honestly. that doesn't mean the russian government doesn't know where he is, of course. but what we can say is that video you showed of president putin talking to young engineers, not at any moment mentioning the rebellion that russia just lived through at any time, that does suggest that video was potentially recorded before that uprising too place and that the kremlin has put it out just this morning. then the defense minister, shoigu, the man who prigozhin, the leader of the wagner group, was trying to unseat, a video of him has been released by the defense ministry. apparently continuing to oversee what russia calls its special military operation in ukraine. it is mute. again, there are suggestions that that video may have been recorded before the mutiny took place over the weekend or the aborted mutiny. so there is an attempt here in russia by the government clearl

we'll bring in nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons in moscow for us.s just after 8:00 where you are. we haven't heard from putin since saturday's fiery speech. what's the messaging from inside the kremlin and what's the mood inside the streets? >> reporter: you make a great point, chris. we haven't heard from president putin since saturday, since he described himself as being stabbed in the back. you showed that video which we think might have been recorded before this rebellion rocked russia. just contrast that with what you were describing there, this 11-minute audio statement from yevgeny prigozhin, the leader of the wagner group, which is absolutely stunning. it is now, of course, leading the narrative. although i don't think you'll be hearing it on russian state television. that statement he has made today talks about the fact that his army, his soldiers were not prepared as he had been told, as demanded by president putin and by the leadership here, were not prepared to sign up to join the russian military. so he is effectively saying that he is

joining us is nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons. you learning about the detention of michael travis leake? >> reporter: it's a little bit mysterious, honestly. there was some video posted by russian television alleging to show leake being arrested. it's not clear if it is travis leake. there is the video of him in the moscow court. we don't know when that took place. what we're hearing from the moscow court service is he's accused of drug dealing charges which would bring a sentence of around 12 years. then, we also have seen a video on russian television that appears to show travis leake insisting that he is innocent. take a look. >> i have been formally accused about nothing. i don't know why i'm here. i am not admitting to any guilt, and i do not believe that i've done what i'm accused because i don't know what i'm accused of. >> reporter: again, we don't know when that video was recorded. it's not dealer whether he was under duress at the time that video was recorded. it's, again, a difficult thing to make sense of. plainly the

nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons is here with the latest.more can you tell us about the speech and the reaction? >> reporter: well, i mean, the reaction was applause in the room, chris, but that's because he was talking to russia's elite, lined up in rows, something like a modern day pull it bureau. he declared that the ukrainian armed forces have no chance, i have no doubt about that. just days, of course, after ukraine began its counter offensive. as you suggest, he directed insults towards president zelenskyy, and barbs towards nato. he talked about the destruction that we have seen of some german leopard tanks that have been sent to ukraine. he said that leopard tanks burn and so would f-16s, referring of course to the plan to train ukrainian fighters with f-16s with the aim, of course, of supplying ukraine hasn't been agreed yet, but it clearly is the direction of travel to supply ukraine with f-16s. so it was an hours long keynote speech by president putin. i will say, chris, you know, when you talk to russians on the streets and our t

nbc news chief international correspondent keir simmons. up first, tell us more about what we heard from russian president putin this morning. >> reporter: yasmin, i think we are now in the aftermath stage of the extraordinary events over the weekend. what we're seeing, i think, is the kremlin, you know, visually establishing that it is in charge. so we saw president putin walk out in front of the ranks of his security services to, as you mentioned, as you say, praise them, say they helped divert a civil war, say they saved the future of russia, effectively. these are the national guards, the fsb, the various kind of, you know, security services that huddle around him and protect the president, protect the leadership of russia. so, you know, kind of a -- optically the effort is to be clear that president putin is back in charge. we're hearing too from the kremlin that the wagner group, this mercenary group that made its way toward moscow here over the weekend, and led this rebellion that that group is having its arms taken away, effectively

chief international corresponden keir simmons joins us now with these breaking details keir, what can you tell us this morning. >> reporter: the u.s. military is calling it a helicopter mishap sunday resulting in injuries for 22 service members. u.s. command which oversees operations in the middle east said the injuries were of different degrees and added in a statemen the service members are receiving treatment for their injuries and ten have been evacuated to higher care facilities the cause of the incident is under investigation. although, no enemy fire was reported and that could be a crucial detail in late april the army ordered a temporary stand down, resulting in at least 14 soldiers being killed now, these are early days, so we can't say this latest crash is connected, but it will surely be top of mind as the military investigates what caused this. >> we do have troops there in syria. what kind of situation are they facing there >> think back to the early days of the civil war in syria when isis was at its peak we're a long way from those days now, but the threat has not dissi

spy back in march nbc's chief international correspondent, keir simmons is with us, following this story us through his court proceeding today, keir >> savannah, we just heard from that courtroom in moscow that evan gershkovich has lost his appeal so he will be held in pre-trial detention. he appeared in a courtroom in jeans and a dark t-shirt inside that now all-too-familiar transparent box with his arms folded there was a moment where he appeared to smile. his mother and father were in the courtroom, as was the u.s. ambassador evan ger sh koe vich, all vehemently denied the espionage charges against him. and we have heard from the ambassador outside the courtroom in the last few moments. she describes evan gershkovich as showing remarkable strength and resilience, says that they have had consular access requests denied three times and accuses the russian government of, quote, hostage diplomacy now, savannah, it will be months before this trial goes ahead in most cases, these espionage charges do end in a conviction in russia. there is talk among russian officials and u.s. officials abo

joining me from moscow is keir simmons. that's quite a readout from lukashenko.ut what prigozhin stands in the eyes of putin and what about the men he was leading? >> reporter: yeah. it's an interesting readout and makes sense, some of it. for example, president lukashenko talked about starting to reach prigozhin then finding him through the deputy defense ministry of russia and we have that video of that. so some of it does seem to tie. i think what it does tell us and some of the other information we've gotten through in the past 24 hours is that maybe this was less of a -- and less an uprising and lid coming off rivalries of people around putin then others around putin trying to put the lid back on. we got from president putin today a picture of further picture of his anger at one point saying, at one point, he was allied to prigozhin, saying he paid prigozhin and his companies $2 billion in the past year to do various roles including of course running his wagner group now. you asked about where are they now. what happens now. again, it's difficult to know. sa

nbc's chief international correspondent, keir simmons is in moscow with the very latest. , good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, hoda. this morning president putin reasserting himself. take a look at these pictures standing in front of his security forces saying, you helped prevent a civil war and insisting that no russian troops had to be pulled away from the front line. late into the night, president putin met with the heads of his security services and this morning another dramatic announcement charges against this weekend's mutiny have been dropped. putin address to the nation focused on one man. while never mentioning prigozhin by name, slamming what he called a militarized mutiny led by traitors. who would see russia choked in bloody stripes. facing down a defiant prigozhin who reported rebellion rocked russia, but insisted in his own 11-minute message that he did not try to topple president putin, rather he says, it was a protest against how his wagner group were being treated. again, demanding changes to russia's military leadership, saying he stopped the
