i will turn now to senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell. what do we know about president biden and his administration's involvement in reaching this agreement and just getting to this moment? >> reporter: ana, the president has been involved from the ge beginning, and he's done so in a lot of different ways, personal diplomacy where the president himself has been working the phones, with all the key leaders including, of course, prime minister of netanyahu, he's also dispatched some of his top advisers and cap net members. envoys on the ground have been working between the different parties trying to communicate to work on the details of this and even the numbers of hostages being discussed with this installation of planned release as well as the amount of time for a pause in the fighting. on all different levels the biden administration says it is involved, it is engaged. in part, because of the partnership with israel, also in part because americans are among those held hostage. we think at least three americans will be released in the fi

joining me now, nbc white house correspondent kelly o'donnell. can you share with our viewers what you are hearing about american hostages being held on the gaza strip and their possible release? >> well, good morning. the expectation today is encouraging. jake sullivan, national security adviser to president biden, has said, and other senior u.s. officials have indicated there is reason to believe that one american would be among those released today. all the cautions have ly as you indicated, there were snags yesterday and hurdles which delayed theprocess. it's tenuous. it's fragile. they are still hopeful that un-american could be included. of those ten americans, as many as ten, their whereabouts are unknown. the u.s. knows that three, two women and a four-year-old girl, would be eligible for release under the terms of this multi day phase exchange of hostages for prisoners and aid. the fate of other americans, for example, men among that group, would not qualify under this. that is why we are talking about three. if we narrow it even further

. >>> we're joined by senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell, of course the president has been briefed or is being briefed, what is the white house saying about all this? >> reporter: well, this has been a day where there's a lot of moving parts on the president's plate, he's spoken to the prime minister of israel and qatar relating to the hostage deal to free 50 hostages. he's dealing with that. now at the same time he's also been brought up to speed by white house officials on this incident, the attorney general has been briefed the transportation secretary has been briefed and at this point, information is coming in from federal and state officials through the white house mechanism to brief the president on what this situation looks like at this point. of course we're here on nantucket where the president is spending the holiday with family and so forth. wherever he goes and travels he's got his senior team of advisers who can brief him on international and domestic affairs and that's part of what has happened here, secured communications and so forth and speaking to word le

joining us now from tel aviv is nbc news national correspondent david noriega and kelly o'donnell in nantucket. david, talk us through what we know and don't know about tomorrow. >> reporter: really major development in this story after a night of deep uncertainty, especially for the families of the hostages involved. we know in this first day of a four-day cease-fire, there has been a group of 13 israeli hostages that's been identified and slated for release. we know that the israeli government has begun communicating with the families of those specific 13 hostages, preparing them to receive their loved ones tomorrow. that's expected to happen around 4:00 p.m. local time. that's 9:00 a.m. eastern. the release of palestinian prisoners is supposed to happen concurrently. what we have heard from the hamas side is that there will be three palestinian prisoners released for every israeli hostage. that's 39 palestinian prisoners released tomorrow. i spoke earlier on the phone with a senior hamas official who confirmed for me that in addition to this exchange of hostages for prisoners, add

joining us now from tel aviv, david noriega, and kelly o'donnell who is with the president in nantuckett us begin with you, david. we are in this pause -- or not this pause, this waiting period before the pause begins and the hostages are released. how tense is it in israel and what are people watching for? >> yeah, katy. the pause before the pause if you will. it's extremely tense here in israel. i should first say among the people who don't have a clear idea of what's happening are the families of the hostages themselves. they have been telling me today that they were surprised to hear of this delay. they heard about it from the press. they haven't gotten any kind of detailed, clear information from the israeli government. they know about as much as anybody else does. the closest to an explanation for why this happened that we've gotten, we've got it from the u.s. national security council. they atributed it to logistical details. that makes sense given the ground war and air assault is ongoing and it's intensified and that's got to make it complicated to say the at least to hammer ou

kelly o'donnell, our reporter there, trying to get to the president about what the headline making news over the last 24 hours or so, particularly 36 premature babies whose lives are on the line. the main hospital inside gaza, basically, according to the world health organization, not functioning anymore. so he says, you know, that the hospitals must be protected. how narrow is the tight rope president biden is walking right now, support for israel versus the growing concern for civilian deaths? >> well, he was pretty explicit in saying he wants to see, the words were less intrusive action regarding the hospital. the issue is that you have hamas fighters at al-shifa hospital and at al-kutz hospital, you saw hamas fighter with an rpg operating right from the chance there, and we know that there is this vast labyrinth of tunnels that hamas has constructed beneath the hospitals. the question is how does israel balance military necessity here against civilian harm, and so i think that the prime minister netanyahu is listening very carefully to the words that president biden uses and whether

now let's bring in senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell in nantucket where president bideneased as part of this deal. what is the white house saying this morning to american families, including the family of a girl who's supposed to turn 4 years old? >> reporter: well, the concern, of course, is could there be anything that would alter the plan, and at this point i've been talking with a number of white house officials, they're watching this closely, it is still their expectation that americans will ultimately be transferred out of the custody of hamas, but not today. and of course that is disappointing, and they are watching this as it's developing, a number of officials have said that they are confident that the deal is holding. but of course it is such a fragile situation. the president has indicated that he did not want too say anything publicly until this transfer would take place. we have not yet had an update on the president's schedule today. i am told they are trying to assess the next steps for how the president would be publicly involved. privately we can tell yo
