so ken, who did it and what did the hackers get? >> reporter: well, juliette, the senate leader harry reid says the attack is the work of the chinese! and whoever pulled it off got a treasure-trove of data. the hackers stole social security numbers for not only current workers but up to a million former federal employees. they got personal information including addresses, birth dates, they got pay history. and the hackers swiped information on health and life insurance plans, as well. on top of that they also stole pension information. no one from the white house is blaming the chinese government. china denied any involvement. the theory is hackers to turn around and try to get their hands on some of the government's biggest secrets. u.s. intelligence officials say that all kinds of spying goes on all the time. but the chinese often have a different goal in hacking. besides national security, chinese government has been accused of hacks to help businesses there compete against businesses here. >>> hm. so we'll see what happens. >> y
