>>reporter: good morning, ken. this is one of the areas mayor morning, west 31st street near 6th avenue. it is a well-known hub for the homeless with at least a dozen people right now sleeping on the sidewalk behind me. they were among those counted for the annual hope count overnight tonight. meanwhile, here is a picture of mayor de blasio talking to one of those homeless individuals here on west 31st street. the mayor was among more than 3,500 volunteers that spread out across the city for a few hours this morning counting the number of unsheltered homeless people living in the city. last year the count was 3,182, and that number is expected to be higher this year. volunteers wrote down some very basic information about the homeless individuals they encounter here on the street in order to help determine what kinds of services and resources they might need to help get them off the street or even survive on the street, if they should refuse help. >> it's very sad, and it's broken down and, you know, there but for
