to be honest when they called me and asked who i would like to speak before me i said, "ken burns."ier. thanks to everyone at pbs, i am so happy to be apart of your farewell season; this is wonderful. ken bastida. an illegal trash dump, piles of debris from a burned out business ended up littered across the field, all the way over on mayor island. kristen ayres went back to where it all started and what she found there was identity theft just waiting to happen. >> reporter: one day, this mayer island lot was vacant and trash-free. the next -- >> i thought, that was just one big mess to clean. >> randy who works nearby couldn't believe his eyes. up to 150 cubic yards of industrial construction trash. two dump trucks full. brazenly and illegally dumped and abandoned on this private lot. the sheriff deputies said it was the biggest dump they have ever seen. toilets, pli wood, debris. workers say the trash heap stretched from here all the way back to those yellow poles and it was piled high up to this barbed wire fence. deputies made a startling discovery. the trash was from this drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in oakland. it is now bank owned and when we visited, it appeared to be burned down. deputies contacted the subcontractor. he agreed to clean it up, even hauling it out in dump trucks

it continues to spread through the stanislaus national forest, burning not far from the town of groveland and yosemite national forest. ken wayne joins us now live. he has been going all with fire crews every day. >> reporter: julie and frank, we were stranded here for several hours this afternoon, because the only road leading to this fire camp was blocked by flames. in fact, if you look behind me, you can see a lot of smoke over those trees. the fire is still burning just a few hundred yards from this command post. if there was any doubt about how unpredictable wildfire can be, that was erased this afternoon, when flames almost swept through this command post. fire personnel scrambled as claims moved within a few yards of the fire command center. these workers were told to grab their protective gear and get ready to use it. >> it's a fire shelter? >> yes. >> reporter: fire crews were able to set back fires to keep flames out of the camp. there are 16,228 acres now burned. nine structures have been destroyed, including two homes. although the fire is still about 10 miles from yosemite national park, flames are moving in
