and back now to that kenneth fire. it started at 230 this afternoon in the west hills and calabasas areas. tonight. police are investigating this specific fire as arson. one person has been detained, and it's all due to the help of neighbors who decided to take matters into their own hands. ktvu zac sos is on the ground in woodland hills. hearing from some residents the moment they saw the suspected arsonist. >> just a really frightening scene here. earlier in the community of woodland hills, we are at the intersection of arcos and galindo here in woodland hills, about five miles from the kenneth fire. as the crow flies earlier today, neighbors saying they saw someone riding around on their bicycle with a blowtorch. a giant blowtorch apparently stopping at various houses trying to light garbage cans filled with tree debris on fire, and moving on to an old christmas tree that was left out trying to light that on fire. neighbors. given all of the fires that have been happening in this community, understandably concerned.

this is the kenneth fire. fire? you can see this is near calabasas. the flames are moving up the hill. very gusty situation in the area where the fire is burning. so obviously this is not favorable for the firefighters there. smoke from the wildfires can be seen on the visible satellite picture right now. now, the winds are not nearly as strong as they were a couple of days ago. but they're drying winds. and you combine that with the drought. a severe drought doesn't make for a good situation. as those fires continue to grow and expand. air quality alert in effect for southern california. look at the air quality the orange is indicating poor for sensitive group. red is unhealthy. this heavy, thick smoke is going to continue to impact them. but some of this in the upper parts of the atmosphere will start to drift into the southern part of our viewing area as we head into tomorrow afternoon. so if you see hazy skies, don't be surprised if you're particularly sensitive to smoke. you'll want to close your windows and doors and put your ac on recirculate.

and that is the kenneth fire that is now up to 960 acres. that's a lot, because this just started at 334 this afternoon. the wind gusts are up to 19mph. now let's go back to the east portion of the los angeles basin, where the air temperature right now is 63 degrees. at the eaton fire, the winds are relatively on the flat side, but the humidity is into the teens. then we head due west. now this is the palisades fire where the winds are flat at this time, but they will be fluctuating. now. what is new is we do have a high wind warning that went into effect at 6:00 straight up. and then meanwhile we do have a wind advisory still in effect. in addition to that red flag warning, you can see the plume of smoke from the palisades fire and also the eaton fire that continues to blow out towards the open waters. however, we still have poor air quality and that will be a factor all the way through the weekend. next time around, we'll talk more about the fires and the record high temperatures we experienced here today. >> all right, roberta, we'll see

by the way, you have the kenneth fire just across from you. in calabasas, so it's around you, all around you. just give us a sense of the community. like, what's it like in malibu right now? >> yeah. we are coordinating directly with the l.a. county fire and the cal fire as they are with us and, in fact, yesterday representatives from central command took me and the executive vice president on kind of a driving tour around the affected areas just to get a better sense of what was happening on the ground. and i will tell you this was devastating war zone is what it looked like. the malibu community is tired, is eager for some relief, but they are strong, they are resilient, they are bonding together, talking care of each other. but it is one of the most stressful times that this city has endured. will, as you drive from santa monica to mall if buy, it's disorienting -- malibu -- because you can see the pacific ocean on your left where typically you would just see a row of houses, and so many have lost housing. palisades looks like a war zone. j
