i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. we have learned new details surrounding a deadly plane crash in sonoma county. the accident happened shortly after the plane took off from the sonoma skypark yesterday. the pilot was killed and his young children were taken to the hospital. kpix 5's jessica flores is live at children's hospital in oakland with the latest. >> reporter: kenny, those children were on board the plane that their father was piloting. now, we do not know how badly they were injured, but we do know they were rushed here by helicopter to children's hospital oakland and we do not know their conditions at this time but we are learning more about their parents. we are told that the family was on board that single-engine plane when it crashed just before 1:00 p.m. yesterday. just about 1,000 feet from the sonoma sky park airport it crashed. the parachute deployed. the father now identified as 38- year-old william s. goldman, died in the crash. his wife serra goldman was taken to sonoma valley hospital and the coup

good afternoon, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. cbs reporter chris martinez is live in carson city where the parole board just decided simpson's fate. chris. >> reporter: michelle and kenny, this was a unanimous vote by this parole board. they needed a majority of seven, four sitting in today. all four voted to grant him parole. this is exactly what a lot of folks were expecting to see today. there wasn't a lot of doubt that he was not going to be granted parole. here he is coming up on his ninth year serving a prison term for this crime that he committed about 10 years ago or so. what happens now is they look ahead to the actual release of oj simpson. he cannot leave prison until october 1 at the earliest. and then there are questions about what will happen after that. he spoke today to these commissioners, this board, rather, he talked about the crime at length which was something people really weren't expecting to happen. and then did he what a lot of legal experts said he needed to do he showed remorse. he said he was sorry and

i'm kenny choi. michelle is on assignment. that bart scare happened just before 11:00 this morning. we spotted people taking the escalators out of the embarcadero station. riders thought they heard an explosion but it was a blown insulator on the tracks. crews are working on ventilating the smoke. no one was hurt. >>> bart is dealing with growing concerns with crime and policing at stations. a safety committee is meeting right now. >> reporter: in the last 24 hours, there's been four documented crimes at bart stations. and bart is still facing a police shortage and questions over how it handles crime data. sexual assaults are up and bart stations have seen 45% more robberies in the 1st quarter. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. >> i don't feel safe. >> some of the characters can be a lot more shady. >> the new police chief is facing criticism for the way the agency reports crime. it puts data on crime mapping.com. a website that shows you where and when crime happens but doesn't provide many details. at the safety committee meeting, bart will go back to having a watch

i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego. 6:31. >>> jessica flores has a look at the damage left behind at the scene. jessica. >> reporter: anne, kenny, we just got an up data right now from fire crews. they tell us that this fire is 50% contained. you can see behind me, i am standing in front of the home that was burned in this fire. this one completely destroyed. another home burned. if you look up above, we have chopper 5 in the air that gives you a nice view of the entire fire. it wrapped around the community burning hills on both sides of the street. right now the huge flames are out, but fire crews stayed through the night monitoring hot spots working to make sure the flames don't spread. it's smoldering right now. the fire started at 4:30 p.m. yesterday and fire crews raced to contain the flames that burned more than 100 acres and filled the sky with thick smoke seen for miles. one home destroyed, another burned. the flames forced evacuations for 11 homes. we spoke to one of the residents who described the chaotic momen

. >> i'm kenny choi.ldfire burning near a popular tourist destination has exploded in size. kpix 5's jackie ward reports. >> reporter: good morning. it is far from being contained in mariposa county. the detwiler fire has surpassed 25,000 acres and is threatening the town of mariposa. that fire is burning about 6 miles from the border of yosemite national park. right now, cal fire says it's just 5% contained. already, eight structures have been destroyed and another damaged. the california department of forestry and fire protection says as of last night, 39 square miles have been scorched. flames are now edging towards mariposa. a gold rush era counsel of about 2,000 people, mariposa cattle ranches are trying to evacuate their livestock from the foothills. >> we were unprepared. keeping our cows together in case that fire jumps the highway again. we are either going to start cutting fences and pushing them through different properties, just to give them a fighting chance. >> reporter: there is a hospital

. >> i'm kenny choi.s thursday, july 20. >>> a massive fire near yosemite is forcing thousands of people from their homes. katie nielsen joins us now with the latest on the firefighting efforts. >> reporter: strong winds are pushing the 75 square mile detwiler fire south away from yosemite but the danger is far from over. it's burning 35 miles west of yosemite and firefighters say it's 7% contained. the fire has been raging for four days and destroyed 29 buildings. there are more than 3,000 firefighters from across the state battling the flames from the ground and the air. thousands of others in the path of the blaze are causing people to flee without being able to pack up their belongings. >> told you have 5 minutes, nothing matters but your animals and yourself. >> reporter: thousands were evacuated due to the fire danger but others had to leave because the fire destroyed water and power lines. firefighters will be dealing with the hot temperatures and high winds again today. their main priorities will

. >> i'm kenny choi. the bill extends "cap & trade" through 2030. kpix 5's jessica flores on what it means for bay area refineries and for consumers at the gas pumps. >> reporter: we're here on treasure island with oil refineries across the bay. this is the setting governor brown chose to sign the extension of the landmark legislation. the "cap & trade" agreement extends the program to 2030. it puts the cap on the state's overall greenhouse gases and requires companies to buy permits to release carbon emissions into the air. that money is then spent on environmental efforts. critics of the "cap & trade" say drivers will pay the price at the pump an estimated 24 to 73 cents more a gallon. former california governor arnold schwarzenegger signed the original legislation allowing "cap & trade" and joins governor brown today at the signing. >> the state of california today is shining because this is a very important message, i think, not only for this state but for the country and for the whole world. it's a message that we have a functional government h

. >> i'm kenny choi. let's get to jessica flores outside the courthouse in oakland, where the sentencing was just announced. jessica. >> reporter: michelle, kenny, i was in the courtroom as one goh came out and i can tell you he appeared disheveled. he was wearing a tan sweatsuit, long hair and he sat quietly as the judge read the sentence telling him he will spend the rest of his life in prison. the lawyer says that goh is mentally competent enough understand his actions -- enough to understand his actions five years after the shooting rampage. the 48-year-old entered a plea of no contest of killing 7 people at his former school, oikos university in oakland, in 2012. the judge found him guilty of 7 counts of first-degree murder sentencing him to 7 consecutive terms of life each victim witho possibility of parole. family members of the victims addressed the court. it was an emotional hour, one calling him a coward. goh made no comments but his lawyer addressed the court on his behalf saying goh hopes his s

. >> i'm kenny choy. officials are set to discuss an issue putting the agency in the spotlight about rider safety. kpix 5 anne makovec is live in san francisco at embarcadero station on why police officer staffing is proving key to the problem. >> reporter: that is certainly going to be a big part of the discussion this morning. by the bart safety committee. but just last night, a report of another robbery on the bart system that was at the bay fair station, a man robbed by three to four suspects, who all got away, and the man was minorly injured. he is going to be okay. but it just sort of adds more fodder to this conversation. which just is questioning basically how bart handles crime on trains. here are the numbers on that shortage of officers kenny just mentioned. with the new expansion to san jose, bart should have 224 cops to serve the 109 miles of line. but as of today, they only have 178 officers. >> we have to do more to protect our riders. there is a sense among our riders that they are not bein

good afternoon, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. lafayette's chamber of commerce was among the offices destroyed in the fire. crews just finished fighting it just a short time ago but as jessica flores reports, the investigation is just beginning. >> reporter: the flames shooting in the air in downtown lafayette, seen for miles around. ken bastida took this video on his way home from work around midnight as the fire devoured the two-story office building. fire crews spent the early morning on the defensive, trying to battle back the flames and smoke and keep embers from flying into nearby apartments. >> we did evacuate three buildings initially because of the amount of radiant heat. we also had some propane tanks that were exploding and so we wanted to make sure everybody was safe. >> reporter: nearly 7 hours into their firefight, crews were still putting out hot spots and dumping water on the charred building. home to the chamber of commerce, the popular restaurant nearby, and a number of small businesses. >> i'm in shock. i just f

good afternoon, i'm anne makovec in for kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. there's been a lot of finger- pointing over who is responsible for the coyote creek flooding and damage. today families in san jose spoke about the devastation and many are upset with how officials handled the evacuation. >> we're on the first floor, so we did lose everything. we had no warning and it was a little disconcerting to find out that the animals had been in the park rescued and moved and we weren't given, you know, the decency of a warning. >> kpix 5's jackie ward explains, residents are now taking action and filing claims. >> reporter: it's been nearly five months since this neighborhood was under four feet of polluted water, and as you can see, this neighborhood is still covered in filth. people are living among it. they are putting the blame on the city of san jose, the santa clara valley water district and the county of santa clara. at one point, san jose says 14,000 of its residents had to be evacuated and find temporary housing. the san jose mayor admitted the city fa

. >> i'm kenny choi. that fire is burning along i-80 12 miles northeast of truckee. besides the westbound closure, the eastbound side is also closed at state route 267 for crews to get crew and equipment into the area. 650 acres have burned. cal fire is helping out with the water drops. chp says that the fire is now 10% contained. there's no estimate time of reopening the freeway. traffic is heavy in the area. chp crews are directing cars around the area as the fire reaches the road. they are trying to protect wildlife, like this deer, to stay safe. >>> we are also getting new information about the damage left behind by the wall fire burning near oroville. at least 41 homes have been destroyed since the fire started last friday. more than 4,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. but some have since been allowed to return home. that fire has burned nearly 6,000 acres. it is now 45% contained. >>> to washington now, where donald trump, jr., is releasing new details about his meeting with a russian lawyer last year. he calls the investigation into it nonsense. mola l
