kern county fire says another earthquake has been predicted in or around kern county. for location, kern county is about two hours north of los angeles. the largest city there is bakersfield. that's in the region where this quick struck this morning. so this is rather alarming piece of information that has come out. i guess this is good warning for people living in that area. you might want to do what you can to prepare. perhaps start gathering bottled water, moving out of the way where you can be hit by falling debris. i don't know what they're basing this on. we know that cal tech talked about an early warning system. los angeles got about 48 seconds this morning. they're talking about 15 minutes. something possibly happening in the kern county area. >> julie: okay. where is kern county? >> kern county is about two hours north of los angeles. the largest major city there is bakersfield. its a rural area but it's also an urban area. it's a much smaller area than los angeles. bakersfield is a sizable medium city in california and surrounded by farmland and lots of agri

it happened just after 10:30 near ridgecrest in kern county but could be felt as far as san diego, las vegas, even in santa clara county near morgan hill. there are no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries but late this afternoon, governor newsom declared a state of emergency in kern county. officials in ridgecrest, which is a city just 29,000 people, they were responded responding to dozens of calls. >> reporter: surveillance footage from this restaurant shows the force of the quake as the building shook items off shelves and employees run for cover. the quake shook bottles of the shelf of this liquor store, reportedly causing thousands in damage. one person took footage of the swimming pool with water sloshing as the quake shook the area. witnesses said the shaking lasted for about 30 seconds . >> i was not sure what to make of it. we have an apartment above our garage so i thought maybe they were moving stuff upstairs but when a kept going, i realized it was an earthquake and i thought about my wife and grandmother inside the house. >> in ridgecrest, at least one emergency

so fires in several places around kern county. but also the structural damage. taking a count of any possible injuries that may have come in. as you mentioned, though, thankfully no casualties reported, no fatalities. minor injuries that obviously they're going door to door to door to check. but because everything is just sort of opening up with the first light that we're getting on the situation, it's going to take some time. the initial reporting, though, is that things are under control. however, when you're talking about under control, after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake, that is still an incredible situation for those first responders and for the people that are now going in and cleaning up and assessing the damage. so that will take some time. as you mentioned, this is the most powerful earthquake that we've seen in the last 20 years in this region. that's 6.4, the one that we were all talking about just a few days ago fon the fourth of july now thought to be a fore shock to the one we just had, that 7.1 from last night. kern county officials were already res
