here's what john kerry's responsible for. number one, perhaps not understanding that what woody allen said, that 80% of life is just showing up. woody allen's wrong. 80% of success in life is showing up at the right time. there was absolutely no way over the last two weeks that john kerry could have negotiated anything. that's number one. so i think he missed the sense -- and you have to understand. when you're secretary of state or one of his advisers, you see this going on. you want to get into the middle of the mix. frankly, his hot mic comments a week or so ago reflected the fact that he wanted to be in the middle of the mix. the problem was there was no deal there. that's number one. number two, i don't think the issue is that kerry is pushing a settlement that will somehow stop this from reoccurring. the problem the israelis have is this. that what he has done perhaps inadvertently is to create a symmetry between the government of israel, a staunch american ally, and the islamic resistance movement hamas, which accordin

that kerry put on the table as a strategic terrorist attack. this is not from the right side. i mean, you know. we both know him very well. this is reflecting a mainstream israeli point of view and reflecting as he said senior israeli officials. i'm israel's ambassador in washington and spoke to the prime minister who told me to make clear that the attacks on secretary kerry are unwarranted. the reporters there in israel might understand this. 87% of the israeli people are against the ceasefire. >> we cited that yesterday. that's the channel polling. >> 87%. moses didn't get a number of 87%. 87%. why against the ceasefire? and i think part of the problem and the criticism of secretary kerry is not what he did, this or that, the fact he is suggesting a ceasefire. when the prime minister wanted a ceasefire and voted for it, he faced withering criticism in israel from the same writerings saying don't stop, continue the operation. why? not because they want the violence to continue but to know when we end this round we are not just setting ourselve

and that was a process -- peace process spearheaded by john kerry. so you can see how the critics have some issues with this professed success. >> absolutely. >> and leadership. >> absolutely. it's not unpatriotic to criticize or to question the policy of your president. what i do get concerned about though is when we have an incident like in the ukraine right now where that kind of knee-jerk criticism sort of inhibits people from thinking strategically. let's play chess rather instead of checkers. who has the most leverage with russia? take this to example. europe represents 50% of russian trade. we represent less than 5%. all the europeans sort of -- >> we have some influence with them. that's how we started the show. >> not as much as europe. >> that's my point. but we began the show by saying is it a fair criticism of the president to say now is the time when you should make your case, why don't you look at the europeans and say look what he just did? he basically directly or indirectly brought down a passenger jet of 298 people. why are you -- >

john kerry is heading to cairo. is he going to find a mute point between the egyptian cease-fire and the proposal that hamas favors? >> reporter: well, julia, that is certainly the hope. and that's why he's coming here and the u.n. secretary general is also involved in the same effort to bring the two proposals closer. but the two parties involved, israel and hamas, they don't seem to be moving closer in the slightest in terms of the negotiations. the opposite, israeli leaders are going to intensify the fighting in gaza and the fighting is becoming much more intense over the last 24 hours. so yeah, hope that a cease-fire proposal can move forward and that kerry will have impact on that. but the reality on the ground now is that both sides bearing the dead from yesterday, the worst day of the fighting so far, more than 100 palestinians killed in gaza. 13 israeli soldiers were killed and about 50 wounded. so that was a heavy day of fighting. and today the fighting is just continuing. the israelis do say they are hopin

not from john kerry or the international community. we are asking for guarantees that israel will not attack the palestinians anymore. we have listened carefully to the statement, and today the statements are coming from israel. they are talking clearly and openly that they will continue their recent operation, even if there was a cease-fire, because as they are saying, they want to destroy the infrastructure of the palestinian resistance, which means even if there was a cease-fire without no guarantees, they will continue attacking the palestinians. >> okay. let's quickly look at what hamas is going to do in a couple of hours time. will we see more rockets fired from gaza? >> well, no one can say what will happen after a few hours. everything is under discussion. there is a political effort. who knows. maybe there will be a solution in a few hours. no one knows. but i have to say clearly and for certain we won't accept the fact that israel has the right to attack us without any kind of palestinian defense. >> okay. thank you very much
