kevin liptak is traveling with the president to warsaw, poland. natasha bertrand is at nato headquarters. natasha, good to see you this morning. as biden continues his trip, many people have commented it's impressive what biden is achieving keeping the european allies united. there is still a long game ahead. what does the united states expect will be the toughest part here in terms of trying to keep them united in the coming weeks and months? >> reporter: without a doubt, it's going to be refusing the european dependence on oil an gas. they are very exposed to russia economically. it's been difficult to get on the same page about the kind of sanctions they want to impose on russia. remaining on the same page about the kind of sanctions they want to impose is going to depend an lot on what the european union wants to do about their oil imports. we're hearing how the united states is going to work with countries and companies to divert liquefied natural gas to europe so they can actually reduce their dependency on russian energy. this was a main to

want to go to kevin liptak. been watching the arrival of leaders from all around the world to this nato summit and of course the expectations are that they will lend more help in terms of sanctions and military support, but we can't be too high with our expectations, can we? >> reporter: well, no. certainly what the president was hoping for in convening this in-person summit here in brussels was to underscore the unprecedented unity that you've seen among allies up until now. what you're seeing is also that the west is testing the limits of how far certain countries will go in punishing russia and that has to do with the european dependence on russian energy. that's something that the president is expected to discuss later today but certainly what the president was hoping for was this very dramatic visit. when you think about these types of summits, rosemary, ordinarily organizers have months and months to kind of come up with what the leaders will announce at the end of the summit, the so-called deliverables. t

i want to go now to kevin liptak with the president in poland. the president, of course, due to give what the white house is calling a major address in the coming hours. what can we expect, kevin? >> reporter: well, i think this will be his opportunity to recap his trip here. lynda, i do want you to know, in addition to the president's schedule, we do expect him to meet within this hour with some ukrainian officials who is going to drop by a meeting that his secretary of state and his defense secretary are holding with their ukrainian counterparts, the foreign minister and defense minister. this is significant because, of course, the president's entire trip to europe has been focused on the ukraine issue. but this will be his first opportunity to hear in person, face-to-face, with ukrainian officials about what's going on the grounds there. while the nato summit and g7 summit in brussels did hear personally from president volodymyr zelenskyy. no ukrainian officials actually attended those summits in person. so we are expecting to see that in the

that's where our white house reporter kevin liptak is reporting. vin, how has the president responded to the calls from president zelenskyy? >> reporter: it seems like he's getting a good reception so far. just to set this up, these are soviet air jets that zelenskyy is asking for. these are planes pilots are trained to fly. if the u.s. and nato aren't willing to enforce a no-fly zone, which at this point they're not, at least help ukraine close the skies over its country itself. so we just did hear in the last hour from the secretary of state antony blinken, he said the u.s. is looking actively at helping poland facilitate these transfers of their soviet aerojets to ukraine, and he said the u.s. may be able to help backflow poland on that. what he means by that is essentially send american f-16s to poland so poland can send their aero jets to ukraine. this is one of the major things that president zelenskyy asked for yesterday in his phone call with lawmakers. he made an impassioned plea for the u.s. to do more, tougher economic sanctions, to essen

kevin liptak is traveling with the president and joins us live now from warsaw, poland, with more on what to expect from the u.s. president today. kevin. >> reporter: well, the president really wants to put more of a human dimension on this war in ukraine, on the decisions he's making in washington, on the discussions he was having in brussels earlier this week. he wants to take in what is happening here in much closer view, and you saw that yesterday when he traveled to that town in southeastern poland. it's about 60 miles from the ukraine border, and it was really evident as soon as he touched down there, the american commitment to this region. air force one taxied right past those patriot missile batteries, armored trucks all provided by the united states both as a deterrence and as a reassurance effort here in poland. and when president biden was meeting with u.s. troops, he did say that he would have liked to visit ukraine itself, but of course was prevented from doing that for security reasons. but really wanting to take a much closer view on the ground of what's happening. and

. >> for more, let's turn to kevin liptak in brussels. how does that change the calculus, the fact that this war has lasted a month now, that the ukrainians are defending themselves much better than expected, which is pushing russia to use much more blunt force in cities like mariupol and in the east and also raising the possibility that a weapon of mass destruction could be used in this conflict? >> right, and that's certainly the growing fear among u.s. officials and european officials is that president vladimir putin might use one of these extreme steps to kind of unblock this stalemate that his military is experiencing in ukraine. that will certainly be one question that is looming over these extraordinary sessions that are due to get under way in a matter of hours here in brussels. and you heard the nato secretary-general, jens stoltenberg. he said yesterday that a chemical or biological attack in ukraine would have dire consequences, and it will be up to the leaders who are gathering here to determine what exactly those consequences

k kevin liptak, thank you so much. >>> let's go to natasha bertrand. we started the hour with him alongside the moldovan president. unity is going to be critical in confronting russia, right? >> reporter: yeah. that's the major theme he sought to express in recent days. the main thing he wants to project along with european leaders is the west is completely united against russia and its invasion of ukraine and they're going to continue to provide humanitarian assistance not only to ukraine but to the european countries that have faced a massive in flux and that bloody kind of invasion russia has brought over the last week now. the main message he's been trying to send is that the u.s. is willing to do everything it can to support ukraine short of actually putting u.s. and nato forces on the ground there and importantly in the airspace. this is something that from the very beginning nato secretary said could spark a war, especially given the fact that if you were to impose a no-fly zone over ukraine, that would involve shooting down russian aircraft. th

cnn's kevin liptak in warsaw. what has come out of these meetings so far?> reporter: well, there have been a few announcements so far. the vice president announced that the u.s. has fulfilled delivery of a patriot missile system to poland and also announced $53 million in humanitarian assistance but really the point of this trip was largely symbolic. for the united states vice president to show up here on nato's eastern flank and demonstrate this unity and cooperation among the nato allies. that was somewhat undercut by that sort of dust--up over the soviet era jets that the u.s. had said it wanted to provide to ukraine the vice president sought to smooth that over in her meeting today. she didn't address it directly when we asked her about it. the polish president was more straightforward and said he wanted nato unity in all of this and ultimately, the issue is moot because the pentagon came out yesterday to say it doesn't support providing ukraine with the fighter jets in any fashion. there are really two reasons for that, one is logistical and how do you
