i will say kevin mccarthy also had a relatively good vibe going into his election.thought he might have trouble on the first vote. we thought maybe he would lose a handful of members, might take multiple ballots. he lost 19 or 20. >> wasn't there personal animas to him, which isn't the case so much with johnson? >> certainly. there was some -- but it was a surprising number at that moment. the wild card i am looking out for, kevin mccarthy lost four or five freshmen members. we have a number of the freedom caucus members we are keeping an eye on. are there freshmen members who want to get attention early on? there is a good chance he won't have the votes on the first ballot. big thing i am looking for, how big is that pool of people he has to work over? how many people does he have to make promises to? four or five? those people are isolated and i think donald trump could lean on them and the rest of the conference could lean on them. what made kevin mccarthy have so much trouble, that was a big number, a lot of strength in numbers. safety in numbers for those peopl

meetings to conclude when we know they are fighting it out in those meetings of who should replace kevin mccarthyearlier in the congress, what do we need to extract from kevinin mccarthy in order to give him the gavel? folks were coming in and out of those meetings pretty head in excited about what you might put on the table but you've come out dejected. you go back in eventually the rank and file who at the back of kevin mccarthy, even may be those who did not like him personally maybe did not love his leadership style, they were so many people within the republican congress who'd just d to be able to legislate instead of having their internal struggles be the news of the day and how damaging that was. i have had a moratorium on bruising in myin copy because i just kept saying it was a bruising site for kevin mccarthy was a bruising meeting. there like we get it. i think talking to members who, as gabe will talk about later, who have agreements across the aisle on legislation that would help their community and it's not even on the table because you cannot run the show on the floor without a spe

that is part of the kevin mccarthy legacy. it's not the legacy he wanted but he felt like he had no choice but to make those concessions, and those concessions led to his undoing. with regard to donald trump, it's a setback for speaker johnson, but also to donald trump, who put out multiple messages in recent days urging republicans to support mike johnson for speaker so this house can get to work and get started moving forward on his agenda. as mike johnson has mentioned, the house cannot certify donald trump's presidential victory in just a few days on january 6th unless they have a speaker. johnson said this would be a constitutional crisis. the date, january 6th, is set in the constitution for the house to act by then, and beyond that, yes, the fact that there is a deal between the center right and the hard right in the house as of several months ago to raise the motion to vacate threshold to nine members, as melanie was pointing out, you can kind of count to nine in the way this panned out, which, again, shows the familia

host: last year, the kevin mccarthy saga, several votes ousting and etc. and its header until we got to mike johnson in november. has that ever happened before? >> we have never had a speaker removes the way the kevin mccarthy was removed with the proposed resolution to vacate the chair where people -- what people call a motion to vacate. that is the first time it ever happened. it had been offered before but never successfully passed. we have heard our history times when the house had not chosen a speaker, so that it's open is not new. to take 15 ballots as it did for mccarthy to be chosen, that length of time we have not seen since the 19 century. >> we are in the quorum call right now, and then what comes next? >> after that we will have the vote for speaker. there will be nominations. each party will nominate their candidate, and we will proceed to without, and what makes of the vote so much fun for those of us who like to watch the house floor is it is not done electronically, but it is done alphabetically, and every member is called by their last nam

congress yesterday with the most embarrassing -- it is the same congress that had its house speaker kevin mccarthy ousted after just nine months on the job. why? because he dared to work with democrats to actually legislate. oh, the audacity. in typical republican fashion, they have no backup plan to mccarthy, so it took weeks of chaos to find a fifth contender in mike johnson. this was also the same congress that saw the expulsion of disgraced former congressman angela favorite george santos amid findings of fraud and misuse of campaign funds by the house ethics committee. again, remember that mess? there was james coleman's expedition suggesting infusion inquiries against president joe biden that went nowhere. not to mention the resignation of congressman matt gaetz, and his failed attorney general nominee. he resigned ahead of a house at the coming weeks -- house ethics report. these are allegations that he continues to deny. and the end of this congress showed us just how much of a public -- the public has no problem to shut down the government. all because elon musk threw a tantrum on x. so,

in that phone call, you could hear kind of rawness to kevin mccarthy., but this was not a written speech. he was just on the phone talking to fox with reports of shots fired and not knowing when would come next. we later learn that some of the fox officials he was speaking to, people who worked in that company through the defamation lawsuit, were also horrified all the way up to tucker carlson saying this was a bad thing because it obviously was a bad thing. kevin mccarthy, though, when he found trump didn't go away made the famous pilgrimage to mar-a- lago and remember, while he did all that, it was not enough to save his job. he was still ousted by hardliners. or take senate republican leader at the time mitch mcconnell. here he was four years ago on that crime scene floor. >> the united states senate will not be intimidated. we will not be kept out of this chamber by thugs, mobs, or threats. we will not bow to lawlessness or intimidation. we with are back at our posts. we will discharge our duty under the constitution and for our nation. the united s

and in that way, this mirrors the speaker election that ultimately produced speaker kevin mccarthy at the start of the last congress. there, it was clear that only mccarthy had the momentum and the votes necessarily banked, if you will, to get to a full majority of the house to become speaker. and that process, the horse trading that went on behind the scenes as mccarthy sought to pick off his detractors one by one, ultimately led to his downfall when he made the house ungovernable. and it was several months later that a small group of republicans joined with democrats to remove him from the speakership. then we saw those rounds over several weeks of voting, as different people did raise their hands coming forward to try to become the next speaker. johnson was ultimately chosen at the end of that process, in part because he had the fewest enemies, and i think that's probably still largely true right now. even the f folks who who don't believe johnson would do a particularly good job as speaker tend to respect him, tend to think of him as a as a fairly savvy operator here, and not some
