rick klein is here from the state of new hampshire. see you, rick. >> reporter: great to be here, greta. >> greta: you had a big night tomorrow night, on abc with your debate. but looking beyond the descbait tuesday, who is staying in? what's the prediction? who is going beyond new hampshire? >> jon huntsman has the most on the line. he has to do well. beyond that, everyone will stay in, other than huntsman, through south carolina. that's going to be a critical moment. that's when the field has to be winnowed if a romney alternative will emerge. the best-case scenario for romney is to split the field through super tuesday and beyond, if that happens, romney is overwhelmingly likely to win. if people drop out, you have a chance to see the anti-romney votes coalesce. that's the chance that a lot of conservative who is want to stop mitt romney have to make that happen. >> greta: you're in new hampshire. and you are on the ground. being outside of new hampshire, give me a sense who, is the momentum on the ground there? >> reporter: remarka

so, joe klein, it looks like rick santorum is slowly edging up to be the number one challenger to romney. >> the south carolina number is interesting. i don't want to break any news here, but this new hampshire primary isn't all that interesting this time. you know, the next really big deal is south carolina. except for the two debates here this weekend, i might add. >> doesn't what happens this weekend set up what happens on tuesday? that sets up what happens in south carolina. it's dynamic. >> but in the past, you could see the dynamic asserting itself in the week between iowa and new hampshire. i don't see all that much happening out here and you can see that in the polls. >> it seems like such a short chasm between the two. i remember that ronald reagan had, what, 36 days to make up for what he lost in '80? >> this is one week. there are a couple reasons. one is, as joe says, the debates. everything's kind of stalled, waiting for the weekend -- >> this saturday night -- >> from the weekend from heck, as mitt romney would call it. the other reason is rick santorum, who should be comin

joe klein, did he have to do any more than that, or was that good enough? >> well, joe, what they're asking is, did mitt romney in that latest recitation of the arithmetic of jobs gained and lost, did he give a credible abs there? is that as good as he's going to get? >> i think it's credible to the republicans, but newt was headed in a really interesting direction in his comments just before. nd it wasn't about the net/net of jobs gained and lost, it was about the private equity capitalism model. which really has kind of overwhelmed our financial system over the last 30 years. and the real questions for romney in the long-term is, are -- is that sort of model, which really aggrandizes executive pay and really opens, you know, iffy companies to ruin, because of the debt that they take on, is that in the best long-term interests of our free market system? >> although i think that the other candidates basically skipped over that tonight. >> right. >> they did not really go after mitt romney on that topic, lawrence. they didn't really go down the line that, yo
