let's bring in nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki over at the big board. steve, what can you tell us as we're counting down to the runoff? >> yeah, it's not kwiept as dramatic as two years ago, almost two years ago, when the control of the that the came down to the majority. herschel walker versus raphael warnock. the democrats have a chance to get to 51, potentially if you want to think long term here from the democrats' standpoint. they're looking at a rough point at 2024. any pad they can get in terms of their margin can be significant for 2024. it does come down to georgia. the most notable aspect of the preliminary in georgia, there was a disconnect. you see warnock or walker hit 50. libertarian got 4% of the vote. the candidate, republican candidate, did five points better than herschel walker. very comfortable for stacey abrams and the governor's race and yet there were a significant number of voters here comfortable voting republican in the governor's race who were not comfortable doing so in the senate race. some of them voting for the libertarian

starting us off, steve kornacki is at the big board, vaughn hillyard in atlanta, tia mitchell, washington correspondent for "the atlanta journal-constitution," and doug jones is a former democratic senator from alabama. thank you all for being here. steve, one day to go. where does this race stand? >> interesting suspense here. we've seen democrats happy with the early voting numbers. the question tomorrow is going to be who shows up, how many voters show up tomorrow and how well do the republicans in particular do with the same day turnout. because the dynamic at play here in the november general election, what you see is the senate result where herschel walker finished a point behind raphael warnock. nobody got 50. that's why we're having this runoff. in the governor's race, the republican brian kemp won easily. he got 53.5% of the vote. there was a five-point drop-off from the republican candidate who won. there's a substantial number of voters, a significant number of voters who were comfortable voting republican in the governor's race, but who were not comfortable voting for herschel

right over to steve kornacki and see how senator warnock did it. nbc news be political correspondent. steve, a lot to look at here. look at the rural counties also certainly the atlanta suburbs decisive for senator warnock? >> that's the headline in terms how did he end up winning it? warnock by nearly three points. remember in the preliminary back in november warnock finished in first ahead of walker. the margin a little under one point. warnock expands his margin over walker to nearly three points in the runoff. biggest snell reason the blue lava counties you see right here in and around atlanta. the immediate atlanta metro area, and the core democratic area. it's the core population center for the state and also a place here county after county where warnock had done really well in november, because, remember, in november republicans had a good night in georgia overall. brian kemp, republican governor easily re-elected over stacey abrams. raffensperger easily re-elected. republicans winning state-wide races in november. this was the exception, t

joining me now, steve kornacki and vaughan hillyard and mark murray with me in washington. steve, take us through how senator warnock improved his showing in some key areas of the state compared to november, while walker did worse than expected in republican strongholds. >> yeah. i think this is the key. two ways of looking at this. start with the core democratic area, which is the atlanta metro area. warnock had done very well there in november. remember, statewide in november, he finished almost a point ahead of herschel walker. reason why he finished ahead in november was metro atlanta. one of the things he wanted to do was do what he did in metro atlanta and maybe a little better this time around, and you can see warnock did that. cobb county, for example, warnock ends up with 59.5% of the vote. i think what's most striking, that's a three-point jump from how he did back in november. in fact, if you take a look here at the margin -- the margin of victory that warnock got out of cobb county, if you look back in november, the difference is 51,000 votes. now look at the di

so to channel my steve kornacki for a minute, it's now going to be a question of whether enough peopleivated by herschel walker himself, by something about him or his candidacy to come out and vote tomorrow. but he's barely campaigning. he's actually not campaigning. he's not talking to the press. he keeps the press 20 feet away from him. he's really not talking -- look, he challenged me to a debate, nicolle. i can't find him. he won't even call my team back. we were like sure, let's debate. he could have come here to manuel's. we can't find him. somebody tell him to call me. >> if he's watching, what is it? herschel, if you're watching. that's amazing. i mean, that's an amazing strategy. and i guess one more thing, joy. walker ran so far behind kemp and i think kemp ran so far behind raffensperger. and neither raffensperger nor kemp are on the ballot. what's the strategy? >> and claire mccaskill said this so brilliantly. the motivation to vote for herschel walker in november was the possibility of having walker have the seat that gave republicans the majority. that's off the table now

steve kornacki is at his big board, vaughn hillyard is in georgia, also with me, greg bluestein and formergressman david jolly who is no longer affiliated with the gop. steve, take us through what we saw last night, some of the trend lines that you're seeing. >> it ends up being for raphael warnock a three-point victory over herschel walker. i think there's a couple major stories here in terms of how this came about for warnock. remember, initially back in november in the preliminary, warnock finished a little less than a point ahead of walker. he expanded to nearly three points. how did he do it? he squeezed more votes, more support out of the core democratic area which is the immediate atlanta metro area. warnock getting 62% of the vote in gwinnett county. this county has been zipping from republican to democrat. it voted in the 2004 election for george w. bush by well over 25 points. now it's a core democratic county. warnock got 62% there last night in november. he got about 59%. so he increased -- he improved his performance in a major vote-producing democratic county. that was part o

still went toward red, but that means, tom bonnier, that warnock -- and we heard our great steve kornackiking about this in each region after region. he was doing marginally better, warnock, in rural georgia. what does that say for long-term strategery for republicans, because let's be clear, rural georgia isn't all white. there are a lot of black people out there too. >> a lot of the african american counties was stellar and senator warnock did better in those communities. to your point it shows the problem in the republican strategy in that the notion was maybe they can mobilize enough of their voters. it is a pure mobilization strategy and frankly a voter suppression strategy on the other side. you see as you know, even in the republican rural counties they were not coming out for herschel walker. they were not excited about him. when you took kemp off the ballot, at least enough of those voters were staying home whereas senator warnock was running an incredible campaign and appealing to voters across the state and it shows in those maps. >> yeah, and to come back to you, don, getting

steve kornacki, we know with the result is now. we have been watching with you over the course of the night over as the results come in. what can you tell us about how this ultimately came down? what was the bottom line story here about how warnock won? >> yeah. i think there are a couple of stories within this here. you start with the core democratic strength which is this immediate atlanta metro area here. it is where warnock, you remember he finished first, he did not get over 50% but he finished first in the preliminary and this is the area that powered him in the preliminary. we are almost all in fulton county right now but i mean, warnock is sitting at 76. 5%, just compare that to how he ran in fulton county. this is atlanta, the biggest in the state, back in november he had 73 and a half percent of fulton county then. this was a great number for warnock in november, and he improves on it tonight, again, a few more votes to come in fulton county. we expect that they will be warnock friendly. they may not be quite 76. 5% but h
