kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in oakland this morning. a bart strike is looking more like a reality now. >> reporter: it really is. a lot of people surprised that it has come to this. they gave that 72-hour warning last night. their contract expires at midnight on sunday. bart and the two unions that work for the bart system were negotiating late into the night when suddenly those talks broke down. sticking points include the usual, wages, benefits and safety measures as well according to the unions. both sides say they don't want -- or they do want to work something out. they don't want to have a strike. negotiations are actually scheduled throughout the weekend so this might be able to be avoided. but right now, neither sideshows signs of backing down. -- neither side shows signs of backing down. >> we don't want to throw the bay area into state of mass confusion. we understand the role bart plays in the bay area. we want a good contract and a good ride for our passengers so we have asked the governor to entertain a cooling-off period.

a neighbor tells kpix 5 the flames were intense. >> the flames i have never seen anything so big. it was all the way almost to the sidewalk. the whole house was engulfed. >> reporter: there is no word on the victim's identity or the cause of death. no one else was hurt. investigators are trying to find out how that fire started. >>> meanwhile, another fire destroyed a house in pleasant hill. firefighters found the house on sunnyvale road in flames this morning. it took half hour to get it under control. no one was inside at the time and the house was being remodeled. >>> firefighters in vacaville say two people could have died in an early-morning fire but their neighbors saved them. the two were sleeping in a house that caught fire on juniper street at about 3 a.m. neighbors spotted the flames, banged on the windows and got the residents out. minutes later the roof collapsed and at one point, witnesses say the flames towered about 20 feet beyond the top of the building. investigators believe the fire was accidental and it appears to have started on the back side of the home possib

kpix 5 reporter ryan takeo joins from us a bart station in oakland.ou picked up a few leaflets today? >> reporter: yeah. here's what they are passing out at the macarthur station. bart says these should not be a part of the negotiations, that safety is a separate deal from the negotiations. they are so far apart that the two sides brought in a mediator to go to the negotiating table. overall there are three sticking points. bart is asking to pay more for rising health costs, healthcare costs, and bart says it's trying to revamp overtime rules. they say a fraction of workers abuse. and third they are fighting over pensions and whether workers should start paying in. >> so right now, bart employees pay nothing towards their pension. that's unheard of. even state employees pay for their pension. it's zero. that's it. zero dollars. it's called the employees share and they are not paying anything. let's begin to start paying into your pension. >> what they probably don't realize is that the bart employee even though the district pays for half of our retire
