let's get right to kpix 5's anne makovec who was live at the scene in san francisco this afternoon with the very latest. anne? >> reporter: yeah right now firefighters are looking at the possibility that christmas decorations may have originally sparked this fire. it started on the second story street. and the couple who lived above it was trapped. at about 1:00 this morning, an elderly couple was asleep in a third story bedroom as a fire ignited in their second story living room. blocking the staircase they normally use to get out. >> the windows would have been the only way for them to escape. and that just was not possible at this time. >> reporter: when firefighters arrived on scene, they tried to rescue the couple. but the man was pronounced dead once they pulled him out. the woman was taken to the conditional. severe burns in a firefighter was also burned as he and s alitcrewic entered the front door. >> once they got in the fire rolled over them. and actually knocked one of them over a little porch area there. >> reporter: he was taken to the withburns to his neck and hands. trea

kpix 5's joe vazquez is joining me now with details, and it's chilling to hear how bluntly he was talking family insists this is a young man, a berkeley high school graduate that's sort of a troll, he exaggerates, brags, tries to get a rise out of people. now we have a chance to see and hear him in his own words. >> i was thinking about targeting the dorms. >> reporter: the young man on the left is talking about a plot to set up backpack bombs on the campus of uc berkeley. this video was released late last week and shows him driving around the east bay two years ago with an undercover agent. he also talks of a plan to commit arson in the berkeley hills. >> i was thinking about just burning the house because there's a lot of trees and homes over there. >> right? >> and start a fire. >> reporter: he's already pleaded guilty to helping isis set up multiple social media accounts, but the feds say his plans were much more elaborate. they say he hoped to kill as many as 10,000 people in the bay area, and even signed up to join the oakland police department so he could steal weapons to help him

kpix 5's maria medina live in san jose where a vigil was just held hours ago. maria? >> reporter: the police chief and jennifer vasquez's family divided on this issue, this is where vasquez took her last breath. but officers say she gave them choice but to fire. the moment that ended jennifer vasquez's life caught on camera. and forever changed her family's y, candles have burned for vasquez. at the spot where police say she lost control of her car, then tried desperately to free it from a fence before she allegedly rammed it into a patrol car as officers stood outside yelling at her to surrender. >> i'm saddened to be here this afternoon. >> reporter: san jose police chief eddie garcia defended the officer's who opened fire killing vasquez. passenger linda bueno survived. >> it was reasonable and justified for the officers to feel their lives were in danger. >> reporter: garcia called the shooting a tragedy and the moment the suspect's crossed paths with officers a coincidence. vasquez and bueno were in a white toyota camera in an area where two people had been shot.
