. >> live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >>> right now on kpix 5 , the south bay rocked by the largest earthquake to hit the bay area in nearly a decade. we are live with reactions from people who felt the biggest tremors firsthand. afternoon, everybody, i am reed cowan. did you feel the shaking earlier today? some of you did . some of you did not, but it was magnitude 5.1 that rocked the south bay at about 11:45 with an aftershock of 3.1. at rattled buildings on the nerves of those not far from the epicenter. that is where we find kpix 5's katie nielsen who was in san jose, very active on twitter right afterwards. hi, katie. >> reporter: head, reed. we were in the rose garden for a different story when the earthquake hit. it felt like a rolling feeling rather than a sharp jolt, and residents we spoke with here said they both heard it and felt it. >> i thought someone was driving by with loud music. i thought, maybe it is a big airplane going overhead, then it was something i never heard before. that is the biggest earthquake i've ever felt in his house. >> the bu

wilson walker >> let's get right to kpix 5 supporter shawn chitnis. he is live at the hospital , san francisco general. shauna? >> reporter: it has been a busy scene on the north side of the campus. we could see plenty of police cars editing coming through throughout the day. there have also been watching a security detail that is been coming in and out of this entrance. let's take a look at the scene about an hour ago when we saw speaker pelosi's motorcade arriving here at the hospital. we know that her motorcade came through about a block from where i'm standing and that they need a roadblock to help escort her in. this journey to get her here has taken all day, as the speaker needed several hours to first leave d.c. and eventually get here to san francisco. we were able to briefly see her going to the hospital late this afternoon. as she was arriving , we know her husband was recovering from a successful surgery. yet to be treated for a skull fracture, as well as injuries to his right arm and hands . cbs news has been reporting that paul pelosi was

let's go now to kpix 5's shawn check this. how is he doing tonight? >> reporter: juliette, we know he is discovering from that successful surgery. as you know, it has been quite the scene here outside of the hospital with as fpd patrol cars coming in and out as well as the security detail that has been here throughout the day. tonight, we know that speaker pelosi is mated here, she is able to spend the evening with her husband. speaker pelosi arrived in san francisco from d.c. late this afternoon on a government plane. we watched hatter motor came made his way to sf general from the airport. that she pulled up to the campus, we got a glimpse of her going into one of the buildings. as she was arriving, her husband was resting after a successful surgery here at the city's only level one trauma center. the medical team here had to repair a skull fracture as well as treat injuries to his right arm and hand. sources tell cbs news he was hit several times in the head with a hammer, with at least one significant blow . still, doctors say he will make a fool

in santa clara county, devin fehely, kpix 5. >> today's quake struck near the calaveras fault. >> the last one was back in 1984. make as we check in with paul, we always hear about the san andreas fault. not so much the calaveras fault. >> it doesn't get as much attention, but it is part of the same system. smaller ones that render the entire bay area. let's take a look at the map we have outlined all the faults with red lines. you can see the target indicating the location of today's earthquake. the calaveras fault is running to the north under interstate 680. the haworth fault intersects , but it is underneath interstate 580. the reason you hear more about the hayward fault is that it has a greater likelihood of producing a major earthquake. a study done about 10 years ago estimates the odds of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake over the next 20 years , at the time the study was done, over the next three decades. there is a one in three chance of that kind of earthquake over the next three decades. both faults are overdue for a sizable event. look at the earthquake timeline. this dates back
